Intrductin A cmpilatin f assessment file data, airbrne * and grund gephysical data, gelgical mapping, verburden drilling and diamnd drilling has led t the fllwing interpretatin f the gelgy underlying the Mikwam Prperty in nrtheastern ntari. The predminant rck types include ultramafic t felsic metavlcanics, clastic and vlcaniclastic sediments, graphitic argillites and chemical meta- sediments. Due t the extensive strike length (26.2 kilmetres) f the prperty, these units ccur in varius sequences and prprtins and represent several vlcanic envirnments. There appears t be a persistent NW-SE trending set f fractures thrughut the prperty but displace ment alng these is minr. There may be a majr shear trending ENE thrugh the middle f the prperty which has displaced a majr irn frmatin in a dextral sense by up t 6 kilmetres. Tw majr areas f cncentratin have been defined fr future explratin - eastern Bradette Twp. extending int Dieppe Twp., Quebec and western Nsewrthy Twp. In the frmer, lw gld values have been btained frm drill cre in assciatin with arsenpyrite mineralizatin. In Nsewrthy
Twp. a plymetallic dispersin trail has been identified in glacial verburden. Assays f heavy mineral cncentrates have yielded values f up t 55,000 ppb Au, 45,000 ppb Ag, 16,800 ppm As, 5,600 ppm Cu and 5,700 ppb Zn. Fllw-up wrk is planned fr bth f these areas and it is felt at this time that there exists a high ptential fr at least ne gld depsit n this prperty.
Prperty Lcatin, Access and Descriptin The Mikwam prject is a Newmnt (5C^) Dupnt (501) jint venture cnsisting f 323 cntiguus claims in ntari and 12 in Quebec staked by Newmnt in December, 1981 and February, A list f claim numbers {Table 1) and a claim map (Fig. 2) are appended t the reprt. The prperty straddles the twnships f Nsewrthy and Bradette in nrtheastern ntari and extends int Dieppe Twnship in nrthwestern Quebec. The western prperty bundary lies in the suthwestern crner f Nsewrthy Twp., in the Burntbush River area, abut 65 miles nrtheast f Cchrane, ntari (Figure 1). In the summer the prperty is accessible nly by helicpter r by bat alng the Turgen, Burntbush and Turctte Rivers. In the winter, hwever, access is prvided frm the Quebec side by the winter rad t Detur Lake, as far as the ice bridge acrss the Turgen River, and then by lgging rads and bush rads. There is less than ^ utcrp expsure n the prperty and mst f this is fund in the suthwest crner near the Burntbush River. The verburden varies cnsiderably in thickness acrss the prperty and depths f ver 200 feet {maximum 255 feet) were
nt uncmmn in the 1983 verburden drilling prgram. The verburden cnsists f till and glaci-lacustrine and glaci-fluvial sediments. Surficial vegetatin ranges frm string bg, alder and spruce swamp t drier ridge areas cvered by spruce, pplar and jackpine. Air phtgraphs f the area shw a strng nrthwestsutheast lineatin in the surface tpgraphy related t underlying glacial features and/r bedrck tpgraphy.
Recrded Hlder The claims are held by Newmnt Explratin f Canada Ltd. license number A-37767, f 33 Ynge St., Suite 370, Trnt, ntari, M5E 1T2.
Submitting Party The submitting party is Newmnt Explratin f Canada Ltd. and all wrk was dne by Newmnt persnnel. The submitting authr was directly invlved in the cmpilatin and interpretatin f gelgical data and takes full respnsibility fr this reprt.
Claims Surveyed and Dates f Survey Three hundred and twenty-three cntiguus claims in ntari and twelve in Quebec were cvered by this survey. These include claim numbers L et.al. in ntari, with a cmplete list attached as Table 1. Linecutting was carried ut frm December, 1981 t April, The gelgical survey, including the cmpilatin f data and reprt writing was carried ut intermittently between June, 1981 and May, 1984.
Acknwledgements All grid lines were walked by Newmnt persnnel in search f utcrp. In the nly area where rck is expsed, near the Burntbush River, gelgical mapping was carried ut with the assistance f D. ilman. P, Wallgren assisted with the lgging f verburden drill hles and carried ut much f the drafting fr this reprt. M.I* Jnes als aided in the lgging f verburden drill hles, lgged all cre frm the 1984 diamnd drill prgram and prvided much f the detailed rck descriptins fund herein. His assistance is greatly appreciated. Gephysical data was interpreted with the assistance f H. Limin,
Previus Wrk The earliest gelgical reprt n the prperty (western 'part nly) was written by R. Thmpsn (1936) in which he nted that sme stripping and trenching had been dne n the east side f the Burntbush River by the Cyril Knight Prspecting Cmpany. This wrk was carried ut ver an area f quartz veining in a shear zne and yielded a highest assay f?2.00 per tn (0.057 z Au/tn at $35.00 per unce). These claims were allwed t lapse and the area is currently held by Newmnt as part f the Mikwam Prperty. The earliest interpreted gelgy f the area was dne by G. Bennett et.al. in 1966 and is presented in MAP 2161 (l inch t 4 miles scale) published by the ntari Gelgical Survey. The mst recent gelgical mapping f Bradette and Nsewrthy Twnships, dne by G.W. Jhns, als f the ntari Gelgical Survey, is presented in MAP 2453 and is current t December, Prir t this publicatin Jhns als published, thrugh the GS, preliminary map P2243 (1:50,000 scale) which cvers the suthern part f the Burntbush- Detur Lakes area with an accmpanying text referring t the gelgy f the area published as an pen file reprt (FR 5279). Prir t the abve-mentined gelgy maps a Data Series Preliminary map, P902, was published in 1975
10 which cmpiled all the wrk dne by varius cmpanies, in Bradette Twp., as filed fr assessment up t A similar map fr Nsewrthy Twp., map P2172, was issued in Certain parts f the prject area have been surveyed by varius cmpanies in the past and infrmatin' frm assessment files in Trnt and Kirkland Lake has been cmpiled and studied by Newmnt persnnel. Many f these cmpanies refer t airbrne gephysical surveys which have never been filed with the ntari Ministry f Natural Resurces. The main explratin target fr these cmpanies was base metals, hence much f the data was nt cnsidered frm the pint f view f gld explratin. Tables 2a and b summarize the previus wrk dne n the prperty and the limit f each respective survey area is illustrated in Figures 3a and b. The earliest gvernment-released gephysical survey was an airbrne magnetic survey dne by Spartan Air Services Ltd. between 1963 and 1964 and was published by the Gelgical Survey f Canada as Map 2367G and Map 2368G (cvering NTS areas 32E/5 and 32E/12 respectively; l inch t l mile scale). Prir t 1983, Newmnt cnducted an extensive gephysical prgram ver the Mikwam Prperty including magnetic, Max Min II EM and selective IP surveys.
11 It was this infrmatin, tgether with previusly cmpiled gelgical and gechemical data, which utlined several gld explratin targets and prmpted Newmnt t carry ut verburden and diamnd drilling prgrams in 1983 and The results f all wrk dne by Newmnt prir t January l, 1984 have been filed with the Ministry f Natural Resurces and the reader may refer t these fr details. Similarly, the 1984 drilling prgrams will als be filed. ' This reprt incrprates nly the infrmatin derived frm these prgrams which is pertinent t the general gelgy and mineral ptential f the prperty.
12 Reginal Gelgy While the rcks f the Nrth Abitibi area are prly expsed, the ntari Gelgical Survey has mapped tw lbes f Archean vlcan-sedimentary rcks which extend westward int ntari frm the main trend f the Abitibi Greenstne Belt passing thrugh nrthwestern Quebec (Fig. 4). These lbes have been interpreted by Jhns (1978) t be the nses f tw flded sequences f mafic t felsic metavlcanic and metasedimentary rcks. The nrthern lbe is smaller than its suthern cunterpart and, being the hst fr the Detur Lake Gld Mine, has been the target f much explratin in recent years. The suthern lbe, in which the Mikwam prperty is lcated, has been intruded by several large quartz mnznitic t grandiritic stcks and bathliths. Cnsequently the metavlcanic and metasedimentary units appear t wrap arund these intrusive bdies. The thickest sequence f supracrustal rcks lies t the nrth f the Mistawak Bathlith and is shwn by Jhns (1978) t cnsist f a simplified sequence f mafic t felsic metavlcanics capped by, and inter calated with, metasedimentary rcks. Detailed gelgy n the Mikwam prperty, which lies within this sequence,
13 has expectedly revealed a much mre cmplex stratigraphy but cnsists f the same generalized sequence mentined abve. All supracrustal rcks in the area have undergne reginal metamrphism ranging frm upper greenschist t almandine amphiblite facies.
14 Prperty Gelgy The gelgical interpretatin f the Mikwam prperty has been based upn bservatins f sparse utcrp, diamnd drill cre and lgs f lder hles, bedrck gelgy frm verburden drill hles and interpretatin f gephysical data. Due t the areal extent f the prperty and the wide distributin f drill hles a great deal f extraplatin is necessary t cmplete the gelgical picture. All structural features have been interpreted frm gephysical and/r Landsat data. Newmnt is still invlved in an active explratin prgram n the prperty and, as such, the gelgical interpretatin is expected - t change smewhat as mre factual data is btained. In this regard, the fllwing cmpilatin is essentially a summary f bservatins t date with an interpretatin f the general gelgical setting. N attempt t verly cmplicate matters has been made such that the reader can interpret the data as he r she sees fit. A prperty map at 1:25,000 scale (Fig. 5) shws all drill hle lcatins and a preliminary cmpilatin f gephysical data. Maps 1-7 (in back pcket) shw the interpreted gelgy at 1:5,000 scale. The metavlcanic rcks have been divided int ultramafics, mafic t intermediate and felsic
15 cmpsitins. N attempt has been made t further break dwn this classificatin since mst f the rcks n the prperty appear t be either dacitic r basaltic in cmpsitin and any chemical variance frm this is prbably largely due t hydrthermal alteratin and the effects f re.ginal metamrphism. Very few true rhylitic r andesitic rcks have been bserved t date althugh bth are present, lcally. Even when the effects f alteratin are cnsidered, a Jensen Catin Plt (Fig's 6a-e) shw that the metavlcanics fllw a trend f, predminantly, calc-alkaline vlcanism with sme verlap int the thleiitic field. This trend is best exemplified by Fig. 6d and is prbably indicative f an Archean rift envirnment {Ludden, 1983). Within the prperty bundaries, the metasedimentary rcks ccur mainly as interflw turbidite depsits, graphitic argillites and chemical sediments. This is in cntrast t the thick sequence f sediments prpsed by Jhns (1978) t lie just nrth f the Mikwam prperty. In eastern Bradette Twp. these metasedimentary units frm a relatively thin (less than 400 feet) package f rcks which separates basalts and ultra mafic rcks t the suth frm felsic tuffs t the
16 nrth. In western Bradette Twp., in the nrth central part f the prperty, the sequence cnsists mainly f graphitic argillites and minr turbidites intercalated within felsic vlcaniclastic sediments and rhylite flws. ne drill hle, MK-84-10, in this nrth central area intersected a series f mafic tuffs which may represent the base f a sequence similar t that in eastern Bradette Twp. It even seems pssible t crrelate these tw sequences directly since reginal magnetic cnturs (Fig. 7) indicate that there culd be a majr shear trending rughly NE thrugh the prperty which has caused a repetitin f stratigraphy thrugh a dextral sense f displacement. The magnetic pattern shwn here culd als be explained by a series f cmplex flds, hwever, until mre gelgical infrmatin becmes available the previus interpre tatin ffers the simplest explanatin as t the discntinuity f bth irn frmatins in this area. The mre prevalent NW - trending set f faults are prpsed t be large-scale release fractures caused by tensinal frces which wuld have existed after the main cmpressinal event causing the majr shear. The rcks in Nsewrthy Twp. cnsist f a belt f metasediments, utlined by grund EM cnductrs
17 (Fig. 5), flanked n bth sides by felsic tuffs and flws. The felsic vlcanics n the nrth side appear t be thinner than their suthern cunterparts, hwever, as they are subsequently flanked by a sequence f basalts. The latter are lcally garnetiferus and, when cmpared t the basalts f Bradette Twp., indicate an increase in metamrphic grade in a westerly r nrthwesterly directin. The nly area f utcrp n the prperty lies at the west end, near the Burntbush River. These rcks are primarily felsic tuffs and pyrclastic breccias with greywacke t the suthwest. A nrth- suth trending diabase dyke is seen in cntact with,, the meta vlcanic rcks and is presumed t cut the metasediments als. Three knbby utcrps f quartz- eye prphyry ccur within this area and may indicate at least ne dyke-like feature which crss-cuts the metavlcanics. It is nt knwn whether r nt j this unit crss-cuts the greywackes. If nt, it may represent a late, intrusive phase f sub-vlcanic activity. This area f utcrp appears t be n the suth limb f a syncline as interpreted frm diamnd drilling. Hles 83-6 and 7, drilled suth and nrth, respectively, bth encuntered a sequence f rcks ranging frm
18 dacitic breccias thrugh ash tuffs and "transitin sediments" int clastic metasedimentary rcks. This interpretatin wuld place the synclinal axis just t the nrth f the utcrp area, trending rughly - WNW. With the exceptin f the eastern Bradette Twp. area where 'tps' appears t be t the nrth, the directin f stratigraphic tps is rather vague and n further attempt has been made t extraplate pssible fld axes.
19 Ultramafic Metavlcanics Diamnd drill hle MK-84-2 cllared in a dark green, massive ultramafic flw which is gradatinal int the verlying basalt. Hle MK-84-3 intersected a highly altered rck with a basaltic kmatiite cmpsitin at apprximately the same stratigraphic level. While it is pssible t crrelate these tw units based n stratigraphy and lithgechemistry (Fig. 6d), they differ markedly in appearance. The rck in hle MK-84-2 is sft and lcally serpentinized but essentially unaltered. The ultramafic in hle MK-84-3, hwever, has been intensely carbnatized such that virtually all the riginal minerals are bscured by the alteratin and the rck has a light t medium brwn clur and a granular texture. N ther ultramafic rcks have been bserved n the prperty.
20 Mafic t Intermediate Metavlcanics This classificatin includes basalts, mafic tuffs and andesites. While many rcks plt within the andesite field f a Jensen Catin Plt, the majrity f these appear t be altered basalts rather than true andesites. In DDH-83-3, in Nsewrthy Twp., the basalts are relatively unaltered and range frm carse grained flws which fine upward, thrugh pillwed units, t pillw breccias and flw-tp breccias. In drill cre, the latter tw take n a green and white striped appearance due t the stretching f fragments. In eastern Bradette Twp. the basalts are mre cmmnly massive, fine t medium grained and altered t sme degree, ften intensely, by carbnatizatin and/r sericitizatin. These appear t grade laterally eastward int a package f pillwed andesites in Dieppe Twp. the latter are pale grey-green, massive t prly fliated, and lcally amygdalidal. Mafic and intermediate tuffs are present mainly in Bradette Twp. and are classified accrding t the relative abundances f chlrite and sericite in the matrix. They ften take n a banded appearance in drill cre and are typically fine t medium grained.
21 All rcks within this classificatin can be sericitized and/r carbnatized t varying degrees and cntain disseminated pyrite and r pyrrhtite ranging frm trace amunts up t 25%.
22 Felsic Metavlcanics These include the rhylitic and dacitic rcks, f which there are many textural varieties. The majrity f these, as seen in drill cre and utcrp, are pyrclastic but ranging frm carse breccias, with fragments up t 35cm lng, t fine grained ash tuffs.. Agglmeratic textures are als quite cmmn. Tw areas within the prperty stand ut as cntaining mre felsic vlcanics than thers: the nrth central area and the extreme west end. This is largely due t the cncentratin f wrk in these areas and the lack f knwledge f ther parts f the prperty, hwever, the high cncentratins f sulphide mineralizatin and the presence f carse pyrclastic breccias and agglmerates in these tw areas suggest that they are indicative f a mre prximal vlcanic envirnment. Pyrclastic breccias are well expsed near the Burntbush River and shw elngated fragments f prphyritic and tuffaceus material in a tuffaceus matrix which flws arund the larger fragments. Dacitic lapilli tuffs and agglmerates are the mst cmmn rcks within this classificatin and are fund thrughut the prperty. Ash tuffs are als cmmn and flws much less s.
23 Sericitic alteratin usually accmpanies these rcks and can be quite intense. Carbnatizatin is mre patchy. Pyrite and pyrrhtite are almst always present in the felsic vlcanics, usually in the range f l-5% as disseminatins r bands fllwing the fliatin. Lcally, cncentratins can reach IQQ% and as the percent f sulphides increases, s des the rati f pyrite: pyrrhtite. Chalcpyrite, sphalerite and arsenpyrite are nted in trace amunts, mre cmmnly in the nrth central area.
24 METASEDIMENTARY RCKS Greywacke/Turbidites Turbidity depsits include fine t medium grained grey wackes interbedded with fine grained argillites, in varying prprtins and thicknesses. Graded bedding is cmmn and the argillites are ccasinally graphitic. Greywacke, n its wn, differs very little frm that in the turbidite sequences. It is lcally plymictic, cntaining clasts f quartz and lithic material. It can als be massive r have an argil laceus fliatin. Interbeds f vlcaniclastic sediments are cmmn in bth f the abve and, ccasinally, thin (2-5cm) cherty beds are als seen. The thickness f these units varies frm less than 10 feet t abut 300 feet. verall they are the mst abundant metasedimentary unit and are fund thrughut the prperty. Calcite, lcally ankerite, and sericite are the typical alteratin minerals fund in these rcks but nly in small t mderate amunts. The character f the sediments are rarely bscured by alteratin. Pyrite is cmmn in the greywacke and turbidites, usually as large (0.5-2.cm) subhedral t euhedral
25 crystals. Pyrrhtite can als ccur, in trace amunts, as fine disseminatins thrughut the greywacke.
26 Graphitic Argillite These units typically give a gd respnse with grund electrmagnetic surveys and make excellent marker hrizns where they are mre cntinuus. They are ften shrt and discntinuus, t hwever, as they prbably filled small depressins in a pale-sea flr. They are typically well- fliated, black and pyritic with the latter ccurring as ndules, cubes and disseminatins in cncentratins ranging frm 5 t 1003;. These are the main hst rcks fr the massive sulphides in the nrth central area. The graphitic argillites are usually nly 3-10 feet thick and ccur either as interflw sediments within a sequence f vlcanic rcks r near the cntact between vlcanic and sedimentary units. Due t the graphite cntent, alteratin is nt prevasive in these rcks but rather ccurs as thin veinlets, ften wrmlike, and clts f quartz and carbnate. This ften leads t severe disruptin f the fliatin.
27 Chemical Metasediments xide facies irn frmatin cnsisting f welllaminated beds f jasper and magnetite/hematite is present thrughut the prperty. It is typically flanked by pale green t beige muddy cherts r cherty mudstnes, depending n the degree f mixing. Bth the irn frmatin and cherts are interbedded with felsic t mafic tuffaceus beds. The main irn frmatin trending ENE thrugh Bradette Twp. varies frm 50 t 150 feet in thickness while ther units range frm 2 t 35 feet. Sft sediment defrmatin, caused by slumping, is cmmn as is a later, tectnic brecciatin. The latter is usually accmpanied by quartz veining. Pyrite is mst cmmn in the muddy cherts, althugh it is fund disseminated thrughut the irn frmatin. In ne such cherty unit, in hle MK-84-2, pyrite and arsenpyrite ccur in cncentratins f up t 40%. The latter ccurs as carse (5mm) crystals and the pyrite has apparently been recrystallized. The cherts here are brecciated and are cut by small quartz veinlets, hwever, these may have been "sweat ut" frm the cherts during metamrphism. This sulphide zne cntains the mst interesting gld intersectin in cre t date Au/tn ver 12.5 feet.
28 Vlcaniclastic Metasediments This grup f rcks varies widely in appearance and cmpsitin, reflecting the type and abundance f clasts present, the matrix cmpsitin, and the type and degree f alteratin. They tend t be quite discntinuus and vary cnsiderably in thickness frm a few feet t mre than 100 feet thick. They appear t be mre cmmn in the eastern Bradette Twp. and Dieppe Twp. (Quebec) rcks than in ther parts f the prperty. n the Mikwam prperty these rcks have been lsely classified int three types: sericitic, graphitic, and mafic vlcaniclastics. The first grup is yellwish green, well-fliated and cntains pervasive sericite. The secnd type is fund mainly in Dieppe Twp. and has a dirty, graphitic matrix. Mafic vlcaniclastic sediments are the least cmmn f the three types and are usually assciated with mafic tuffs. Chlrite is the mst abundant matrix mineral in this type. Pyrite is cmmn in these rcks and usually ccurs as fine, disseminated crystals and blebs.
29 INTRUSIVE RCKS N intrusive rcks have been bserved in Bradette Twp., hwever, several types f dykes are nted in Nsewrthy Twp.: Rhylite Prphyry As previusly mentined, this quartz-eye prphyry ccurs as three knbby utcrps near the Burntbush River and appears t crss-cut the felsic vlcanics in this area. It was bviusly emplaced prir t reginal metamrphism since a gneissic texture has develped, parallel t fliatins in the surrunding vlcanics, giving the rck a granitid appearance. While the writer did nt bserve any.cntacts between the prphyries and adjacent rcks, Thmpsn (1936) interprets these dykes as being "nearly cntempraneus with the lavas and in places appear t grade int them". He als bserves that sme f the prphyries appear t have intrusive cntacts with the ther vlcanics. A few narrw (usually less than 10 feet) dykes f rhylite prphyry are als seen, t crss-cut the basalts in DDH These cntain 151; subhedral phencrysts f white feldspar in a grey matrix f fine grained quartz, feldspar, bitite and chlrite.
30 Gabbr verburden drill hle MV-84-12A intersected a medium grained, massive gabbr in bedrck. This hle was drill n a small linear magnetic high suggesting that this is a dyke-like feature. Diabase A diabase dyke, apprximately 100 feet wide, cuts the vlcanic rcks near L54W and trends rughly N20 W. This rientatin is cnsistent with ther diabase intrusives in Nrthern ntari which are Late Precambrian in age. Lamprphyres These thin (less than 3 feet thick) dykes are als fund in DDH-83-3 cutting the basalts. They have a very fine grained matrix which weathers a dark brwn and cntains 7% hrnblende phencrysts. The latter are randmly riented and d nt exceed a few millimetres in length. A chilled margin, usually nly abut 5mm thick, is bserved at the cntact with basalt. These rcks may be related in sme way t the rhylite prphyry dykes fund in this drill hle, r they may represent a late, intrusive phase f mafic vlcanism.
31 Ecnmic Gelgy The Mikwam prperty was staked as a gld prspect as the underlying gelgy was believed t be similar t the Agnic-Eagle Gld Mine near Jutel, Quebec. This is still the primary target althugh the nrth central area has sme characteristics f a base metal envirnment. In previus wrk, several cmpanies had btained gld and silver values f up t 0.02 z/tn in drill cre. A gld shwing near the Burntbush River gave a highest assay f 0.06 z Au/tn ver 5 feet in a pyritic shear. After retrieving ld Hudsn Bay drill cre frm Dieppe Twp., Newmnt btained assays f up t 1400 ppb Au in pyritic cherts with arsenpyrite. Diamnd drilling by Newmnt in Dieppe Twp. has cnfirmed the presence f lw {up t 681 ppb) gld values with arsenpyrite in graphitic vlcaniclastic sediments in the area f the anmalus Hudsn Bay hle. Tw and a half kilmetres west f here, in Bradette Twp., Newmnt intersected 12.5 feet f semi-massive pyrite and arsenpyrite in muddy cherts which averaged 0.04 z Au/tn ver this length. It is suspected that these tw areas are related and mre wrk is planned fr this regin. The 1984 verburden drilling prgram in Nsewrthy
32 Twp. has detected a gld dispersin trail cntaining gld values in heavy mineral cncentrates f up t 55,000 ppb and silver values f up t 45,000 ppb. N fllw up wrk has been dne at this time, hwever, this will be the primary target fr the upcming field seasn.
