4 Why floods? More than 50% of Post Disaster Needs Assessments (PDNAs) that WB/GFDRR have provided technical assistance to are flood events. (From GFDRR website)

5 What we need for rapid impact assessments (1) Maximum inundaion extent (and ideal world water depth and velocity too) (2) SpaIally mapped asset data (3) Overlay hazard with exposed assets to come up with direct damage by sector. Hazard layer mapped using NASA MODIS and UNOSAT mapped inundacon using Radarsat- 2 in the southern delta area for the Nigeria PDNA 2012

11 CollaboraIve SpaIal Assessment (CoSA) for impact assessments Trilateral agreement on PDNA (EU, UN and WB) since 2008 CoSA is focused on collaboraion in the use of remote sensing for PDNA. Started following 2010 HaiI earthquake summer Pakistan PDNA was the first flood event for CoSA Nov Sprint saw EU, UN- ITHACA and GFDRR collaborate on prototyping hazard layer tool, based on NASA s MODIS global flood maps system.

14 UlImately.Tsunami damage assessment Following the Great East Japan Earthquake GEJE showed great examples of data preparedness. Latest Commercial exposure/asset data was overlaid on tsunami inundaion extent and aerial photos for claim validaion both by government agencies and private insurance companies. OpenDRI related aciviies help improve preparedness of asset data.

15 Future DirecIons Focusing on large scale flood products for Post Disaster Need Assessments Focus on automaing and improving the inundaion extent mapping capabiliies especially to create be^er links with InaSAFE and NaIonal Government (through naional GeoNodes) Exposure data - > Improve Global availability of exposure informaion through leveraging exising iniiaives (eg.2015 Global Assessment of Risk UNISDR) Enable naional governments to produce flood hazard and risk informaion both at basin and city scale - > leading towards risk miigaion (land use planning, flood protecion measures etc) through demonstraion of the cost- benefit of acion Improve the integraion of future climate informaion into flood hazard and risk informaion ie, what does a 1/100 year flood look like at 2012, 2050 and 2100? At naional level, capacity building is key. Need to leverage internaional collaboraion and knowledge.
