2 December 26 th, 2004 Tsunami Epicenter of earthquake on 26 December 2004 and its aftershock epicenter on 28 March Tsunami hitting Andaman sea coast, Thailand on 26 December 2004, 1 hr. 45 min. after earthquake. 3 The Impact of Tsunami Cause severely damaged to natural resources and environment and enormous lost of life through out the Andaman sea coast. Landslide in hilly area around Ko Ra, Phang-Nga province Sinkhole in Krabi province Crack in limestone Tham Pet, Krabi province Coastal erosion along beach in Ranong province 4 2

3 DMR Activities 5 Geohazard monitoring and warning in tsunami-affected areas Established the Special Center for monitoring of earthquake incident, evaluating of geological impact, issue public warning and disseminating the fact for the public. Analyzed and evaluated causes and the risk of earthquake such as cave collapse, landslide and coastal erosion. 6 3

4 Earthquake risk map of Thailand was revised in Earthquake Earthquake monitoring networks were set up along the main active faults in Thailand. 7 Earthquake Seismometers were installed for ground motion monitoring Seismometers were installed for ground motion monitoring in Phang-Nga province 8 4

5 Landslides Geological Surveys were conducted in landslide Hazard areas of Phuket and Phang Nga province. Establishment of landslide Early Warning Networks landslide hazard survey in Phuket province. Landslide Early Warning Network in Phang-Nga province. 9 Landslide hazard maps Landslides Manuals for landslide hazard mitigation with the list of risk village in each region 10 5

6 Landslide Early Warning Network Network of cooperation among concern government agencies and local communities were established with in landslide hazard areas. Local knowledge and insight are important to successful planning and decision-making processes. Training course on how to establish the warning network for the villages in risky area were performed at 35 risk villages in Phang-Nga province. 11 Sinkhole investigation Sinkholes Ground Penetrating Radar were operated for locating underground sinkhole 12 6

7 Sinkhole risk-areas were identified by the aerial photo and satellite images.. Sinkholes Practice manual for sinkhole risk areas with the list of risk provinces. 13 Cave Collapse investigation Cave Collapse Public warning notice Crack in limestone Pet Cave, Krabi province 14 7

8 The DMR conducted the survey for coastal vulnerability and protection measure in the severely eroded coast. Assessment of Coastal Changes Promote design that is appropriate with best practice of resource area. The master plan for land-use planning. Protection barrier with greenbelts areas at front of beaches. 120 reference global position system poles were installed along coastal zone. Reference bench mark on the beach in Phang-Nga province. 15 Public Preparedness Conduct public training on Natural Hazard Preparedness for all sub-district in affected areas. 407 villages, 95 subdistricts, 25 districts, 6 provinces 16 8

9 Public Preparedness Inundation area of Patong Beach is larger in the southern part close to lagoon outlet. Damaged zone 1. Totally damage 2. Partially damage 3. 10 International Cooperation DMR in cooperation with CCOP and seminar for exchanging knowledge on tsunami impact. The office also have cooperate with the government of Germany, Norway, Japan, Italy, Poland, United Kingdom and Israel. Coastal damage assessment and tsunami vulnerability of coastal communities were carried on The distribution of tsunami sediments were mapped and sample were collected for contamination analysis
