ABSTRACT The ten contiguous claims known as the "Birch Lake Claim Group" are located on the Shabumeni Lake (52N/7) 1:50,000 topographic sheet between ' to ', and ' to '. The property is located 100 airborne kilometers northeast of Red Lake, Ontario, on the western shore of Birch Lake. During the summer of 1984 a two man crew, led by Chris Davis, mapped and sampled the claims on a 1:2,500 scale. geologic units: The claims are underlain by three north-northeast trending pyroclastics with rhyolitic flows. basaltic flows, basaltic to andesitic flows, and felsic The units have undergone varying degrees of shearing and alteration, with the eastern portion of the claims having undergone the most intense sericitization and shearing. quartz vein within the felsic pyroclastics, and discordant to the shearing yields gold values ranging from 2,400 ppb to 8,500 ppb. Background gold values for the surrounding units range from 4 ppb to 9 ppb. A 1:1 INTRODUCTION The ten contiguous claims known as the "Birch Lake Claim Group" are located on Shabumeni Lake (52 N/7) 1:50,000 topographic sheet between ' to ', and ' to ', 100 airborne kilometers northeast of Red Lake, Ontario. Access to the claims is by float plane or helicopter. A fishing camp owned by Jack Green of Red Lake, is located two kilometers east of the claim group, on Birch Lake. The positioning and distribution of the ten claims, numbered to (inclusive), , to (inclusive), is shown on the Shabumeni Lake Claim Map #6-1881, and the Little Shabumeni Lake Claim Map #G A Ministry of Natural Resources work permit, number D was obtained for the exploration and camp set-up.

P. C. Thurston, M. C. Jackson, J. Pirie, of the Ontario Geological Survey mapped the Birch Lake Area in 1977 to In 1981, a report and finished 1:50,000 geology map were published by the O.G.S. During the summer of 1983, a reconnaissance party led by Geoff Pearce of Labrador Exploration (Ontario) sampled numerous locations around Birch Lake. This sampling subsequently led to the staking of the Birch Lake Claim Group in August A two man geological party employed by Labrador Exploration (Ontario), consisting of Chris Davis and Jay McNaughton, completed 16 work days' worth of work on the Birch Lake claims, dating from May 24 to June 17, The work consisted of establishing a flagged grid, with baseline trending azimuth and the crosslines spaced 90 metres apart, trending azimuth. Stations, 30 m. apart were flagged along all lines. The final grid consisted of a 1650 m. baseline, and 18 crosslines yielding a combined distance of 10.5 kilometers. Detailed mapping on a 1:2,500 scale along all grid and claim lines was completed. Sampling of the various lithologies accompanied the mapping. The 121 rock samples taken were shipped to Bell-White Laboratories in Haileybury for gold analysis. The topography of the Birch Lake claims consists of northeast trending, rounded ridges, and mounds of bedrock separated by swampy lowlands or treed valleys. 2:1 REGIONAL GEOLOGY The Birch-Uchi Lakes metavolcanic-metasedimentary belt is Early Pre-Cambrian in age (Thurston, Jackson, and Pirie 1981). The regional geology consists of northeast trending belts of felsic to mafic rocks, with gabbroic intrusions, all overlain by a sedimentary sequence. This succession is part of the northern limb of an east-northeast trending syncline. North-northeast trending strike-slip faults dissect this structure and succession of rocks.

The metamorphic grade of the rocks varies from lower greenschist to upper greenschist facies as observed from the abundance of chlorite found in the stratigraphic succession. 3:1 LOCAL GEOLOGY Figure #1 is a detailed geological map of the Birch Lake claim group. The claim group consists of three major geological units: basaltic flows, basaltic to vandesitic flows, and felsic pyroclastics with rhyolitic flows. These units trend north-northeast, with the basaltic to andesitic unit pinching out within the felsic unit. 3:2 BASALTIC FLOW UNIT The basaltic flow unit is characterized by the presence of 5 m. to 10 m. pillowed, and massive flows. olive-green with light brown patches. a dark green to dark green-grey colour. The flows weather to a pitted On a fresh surface, the flows are They are fine grained, consisting of chlorite platelets, and 0.5 mm. to 2 mm. plagioclase lathes. Pillowed flows contain either closely packed or isolated pillows ranging in size from 5 cm. to 110 cm., with l cm. to 2 cm. selvages. The selvages weather to a rusty-orange outer crust with an olive-light green * inner rim, and consists of intensely altered, fine grained mafic material. The pillows are elongated at 40 0 to 60 0, and indicate that west is the top direction of the flow units. The flows have undergone moderate to intense chloritization. Zones of carbonization and silicification occur within this basaltic flow unit. These zones are fine grained, medium green in colour, and correspond to the more intensely sheared zones of the unit. Wispy veinlets of quartz and calcite also define these altered zones. The basaltic flow unit has undergone minor shearing, with zones of intense shearing. The shear direction ranges from 40 0 to 60 0.

Calcitic veinlets and shear coatings, and discontinuous quartz-chlorite veinlets occur parallel to the shear direction. Flow banded rhyolites trending 40 0, with sharp contacts, occur within the basaltic flows. The rhyolites are a fine grained, light to medium green colour, and contain patches of slightly coarser rhyolite. Rounded to subangular clasts, ranging in size from 7 mm. to 20 cm. occur isolated throughout the basaltic flows. These clasts are fine grained, pale green in colour, extensively fractured, and weathered to a brown-green colour. Flow lines within the basaltic flows surround these clasts. Pillowed flows are best developed and clearly visible only in the southern portions of the basaltic flow unit. 3:3 BASALTIC TO ANDESITIC FLOW UNIT This unit is characterized by the presence of north-northeast trending, intensely sheared and altered basaltic to andesitic flows. These flows are fine grained, dark to medium green in colour, containing chlorite, plagioclase, and less than lo'ji quartz. They weather to a pale green-grey to a pale light brown, with pitted or pock marked patches. The flows are intensely sheared with zones of low shearing. The shearing has an attitude ranging from 040/060 W to 049/090. Moderate sericitization and intense chloritization characterize the alterations of this unit. Calcite is ubiguitous across the unit along shear planes. Minor non-carbonate (ankerite?) occurs as isolated patches within the altered flows. It should be noted that this unit is fine grained, and is intensely sheared and altered. This leads to the possibility that the unit may consist of flows, and/or fine grained pyroclastics (crystal

tuffs), and not solely basaltic to andesitic flows as proposed by the authors. 3:4 FELSIC PYROCLASTICS WITH RHYOLITIC FLOW UNIT This unit underlies most of the Birch Lake claims. sub-divided into three sub-units on the basis of grain size : It can be (a) A linear zone trending north-northeast of felsic tuff breccias separating the basaltic flow unit from the basaltic to andesitic flow unit. The tuff breccias are composed of a pale green (with scattered chlorite platelets l mm. to 3 mm.) to a dark green coloured matrix, surrounding subangular to angular clasts. The matrix is fine grained siliceous (composed of silica and chlorite), weathers to a patchy green to medium brown colour and contains traces of pyrite. The clasts range from l cm. to 30 cm. in length and from close packed to isolated, throughout the matrix. Most of the clasts ( 90'^) are rhyolitic in composition, but quartz and altered vesicular clasts occur in places. The rhyolite clasts, commonly surrounded by a l mm. to 3 mm. chlorite rim, have a blocky, high relief appearance, and weather to a pale beige colour. Intense sericitization and chloritization characterize the alteration of the zone. Shearing at an a attitude ranging from 040/088W to 048/085W, varies from weak towards the northwest, to intense eastward. Calcite, as veinlets and shear coatings, accompanies the shearing across the zone. (b) A quartz crystal lapilli tuff zone trending north north-east underlies the western shore of Birch Lake. It is characterized by a fine grained silica-chlorite, medium grey to medium green matrix containing.5 mm. to 10 mm. fragments. The fragments are rounded to subangular, consisting of quartz and sericitized plagioclase, with minor calcitic fragments, or rims. Rhyolite clasts, up to 20 cm. in length are isolated throughout this unit. These are subangular, and

weather to a high relief, white colour. tuff weathers to a steel grey with white fragments. The quartz crystal lapilli This zone has undergone moderate sericitization and chloritization with localized intense areas. Iron carbonate is abundant along shears and within quartz-chlorite veins. These veins are 2 cm. to 30 cm. wide and trend Shearing trends to 038/088 0 W, and is intense with minor moderately sheared areas. Calcite occurs along shear planes, and within l mm. to 3 cm. veinlets. This zone contains patches that resemble felsic tuff breccias. They contain isolated rhyolitic, subangular clasts ranging in size from 3 cm. to 20 cm. These patches may be interbedded, but neither gradational nor sharp contacts with the quartz crystal lapilli tuff can be distinguished. (c) A northeast trending zone of felsic lapilli and crystal tuffs with minor tuff breccias underlies the northeast portion of the claims. The western contact is marked by a north-northeast trending, 20 m. wide bed of felsic tuff breccias. The matrix is a grey-green colour, fine grained, and contains subangular to angular, 4 mm. to l m. clasts. Aim. layer of large (.5 m. to l m.), subangular rhyolite clasts marks a correlatable horizon trending 03A 0 across 150 m. This layer pinches out both towards the southwest and northeast, and fines westward. The rest of the zone consists of lapilli and crystal tuff sequences. The lapilli tuffs weather from a dull olive green to a pale grey colour, with l mm. to 11 mm. white subangular fragments. The matrix is medium to dark green in colour, siliceous, fine grained, and contains traces of pyrite. This zone has undergone moderate to intense sericitization and chloritization. Shearing has attitude 036/080W, and is intense across the zone.

The lapilli tuffs are interbedded with laterally discontinuous crystal tuffs. The crystal tuffs weather pale brown, are fine grained, siliceious, and have undergone moderate to intense sericitization and chloritization. Isolated subangular rhyolite clasts occur in these crystal tuffs. Calcite occurs along shears trending to 042 0, as discontinuous, 2 mm. to 5 mm. veinlets. Rhyolite flows, 10 cm. to 50 cm. wide, occur within this Felsic Pyroclastic Unit. They are fine grained, pale green in colour, and weather to high relief, whitish features. 4:1 STRUCTURE The units underlying the Birch Lake claims have been sheared at various intensities. This shearing has led to the formation of numerous strike-slip faults paralleling the shear attitudes. Joint sets occur within each unit, discordant to the shearing. (a) Joints : There are no consistencies in joint attitudes within the Birch Lake claims, nor within each geological units. (b) Faults : Minor strike-slip faults occur parallel to the shearing in the intensely sheared zones. (c) Shearing : Figure #2 shows the low moderate, and intensely sheared zones. The central to eastern portion of the claims is intensely sheared with scattered moderately sheared pockets. This corresponds to the Felsic Pyroclastics and Rhyolite Flow Unit and the eastern portion of the Basaltic to Andesitic Flow Unit. The western, weakly sheared zone corresponds to the Basaltic Flow Unit. It should be noted that abrupt changes in shearing may be due to fault zones that were not observed in the mapping.

5:1 MINERALIZATION A quartz vein (Figure #3), trending occurs along the western shore of Birch Lake. The vein, discordant to the shear direction contains chloritic stringers and iron-carbonate patches. alteration envelope of intense sericitization surrounds the vein and associated splays to an estimated distance of 50 cm. A sample of this quartz vein taken in 1983 yielded 8,500 ppb gold. along the quartz vein - quartz crystal lapilli tuff contact. as disseminations occurs within the intense sericite envelope. An Traces of pyrite occur Magnetite, Pyrite, present as fine disseminations and in some cases as isolated l mm. to l mm. cubes, occurs in the three geologic units underlying the Birch Lake claims. The basaltic flow unit is characterized by 20h to 5*^ pyrite, with the remaining two units containing H to 2J0 pyrite. One small, intensely sheared felsic tuff outcrop contains numerous l cm. to 2 cm. wide quartz veins trending parallel to the shearing. These veins are dark green to black in colour, suggesting the presence of tourmaline or fine grained chlorite. Pyrite occurs within the veining, and the intensely sericitized felsic tuff host. The results from the 121 rock samples analyzed for gold are plotted and contoured on Figure #4. The highest values are associated with the quartz veining previously discussed. Background values for gold range from 4 ppb to 9 ppb in the three geological units. 6:1 CONCLUSIONS The highest gold assays (2400 ppb to 8500 ppb) are associated with the major quartz vein occurring along the western shore of Birch Lake. The vein contains chloritic stringers and iron carbonates, and is surrounded by a 50 cm. wide envelope of intense sericitization. Gold values decrease to a background level ranging from 4 ppb to 9 ppb in the surrounding rock. There would appear to be no economic potential

underlying this claim group, but further investigation of the quartz vein is warranted, based entirely on favourable gold values. 7:l REFERENCES Thurston, P.C., Jackson, M.C., and Pirie, J : Pre Cambrian Geology of the Birch Lake Area, Kenora District (Patricia Portion); Ontario Geological Survey Preliminary map p.2387, Geological Series, Scale 1:50,000 Geology
