1B. New JR Schedule FY Antarctica s Cenozoic ice and climate history Ø Three JRFB proposals form a coherent West Antarctic Margin transect illuminating spatial and temporal variations of past ice sheet dynamics Ø Pursueing a scenario with 3 expeditions in 3 seasons Ø Improved understanding of underlying processes, thresholds and magnitudes of previous West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) retreats and collapses, with implycations for sea level rise 848 Weddell Sea (at SEP) Update by Anthony Koppers Slide 4 of 12
2. Long-Term JR Cruise Track UPDATED MAP (calendar years) FOLLOWING JRFB MEETING OF MAY 2016 Update by Anthony Koppers Slide 5 of 12

2. Long-Term JR Cruise Track Proposal Pressure is improving in the Atlantic (!) Ø In the South Atlantic the vast majority are now in the FULL1 (not revised yet) stage Ø If these do well in SEP, EPSP and JRFB, then they can develop into an expedition by > April 2019 (mid-late FY19) at the earliest OCT 2016 JAN 2017 APR 2017 JUN 2017 OCT 2017 JAN 2018 MAY 2018 JUL 2018 SEPT 2018 > APR 2019 PROPONENT ACTION IODP PANELS FULL1 FULL2 PRL SEP Ask for Revision SEP Send Out for External Review SEP Approve, Rate and Forward to JRFB JRFB May put Proposal on Expedition Schedule Safety Package EPSP Approve Sites SAILING EXPEDITION Update by Anthony Koppers Slide 7 of 12
3. Non-Disclosure Agreements IODP Proposal Confidentiality Policy (approved by JRFB in February 2015) Ø Proposals are confidential throughout the entire review process up to scheduling at the JRFB Ø All SEP members/participants agree that they will not disclose or disseminate proposal contents or discuss the proposal outside the context of their role with IODP Ø Proponents are responsible for identifying any confidential information (through labeling) Ø Proponents are responsible for ensuring removal of confidential information prior to release of the proposal document Update by Anthony Koppers Slide 8 of 12
3. Non-Disclosure Agreements However, in some cases, some proposals cannot proceed without Industry Data requiring an Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) Ø Proponents are responsible to bring the need for an NDA to the attention of the SSO/SEP Ø Proponents need to show that the standard IODP Proposal Confidentiality Policy is not adequate for their proposal Ø Proponents need to engage the company legal department and provide a template for the NDA So far, we successfully have worked with three proponent teams, who required NDA s to use industry data in their IODP proposals Update by Anthony Koppers Slide 9 of 12
4A. Looking Ahead to FY SEP proposal process for regional planning of JR ship track works very efficiently and is agile Ø Need to keep stimulating timely submissions for FULL/REVISED proposals in the South Atlantic Ø Need to wake up community to start submitting PRELIM/FULL proposals for the North Atlantic, Arctic and the adjacent seas Circumnavigation requires new Indo-Pacific proposals for Ø This was a consensus statement from the very first JRFB meeting in May 2013 Ø Generate sufficient proposal pressure post-2013 Update by Anthony Koppers Slide 10 of 12
4B. JRSO Mid-Term Reviews JRSO FY2015 review panel (chair B. John) met in February 2016 following a two-day long co-chief scientist review (chair C. Fulthorpe) Both NSF and the JRFB have been very pleased with this 3 rd year status report, showing that the facility is being operated efficiently, expediently and economically JRSO FY2016 mid-term review panel (chair M.
