4 HABSOS Pilot Project ( ) HABSOS was conceived as a retrospective Case Study of red tide blooms in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Correlating bloom observations to environmental data including remote sensing Key goal: design a HABs data management and communication system to assist State managers a network for rapid collection and dissemination of data and information on Karenia brevis events and related environmental factors.

5 HABSOS Binational Effort (2005 current) Support the Gulf-wide, binational partnership Develop regional data management and communications systems Provide timely access to data and information for detecting, tracking and forecasting harmful algal blooms events and their effects of public health and natural resources Identify opportunities, obstacles and challenges for full implementation of the Gulf of Mexico component of the Global Coastal Ocean Observing System, expanding the network to be established in Veracruz towards the other Mexican Gulf states

7 HABSOS Future efforts NODC/NCDDC direction towards end-to-end data management of phytoplankton obs Multiple species Wide accessibility for end-user apps NCDC will maintain current HABSOS data entry tool and mapping site until replaced NCDDC will continue to support Spanish language version Currently developing web services framework for data integration

19 HABSOS FY08 Programmed Upgrades Implementation of a Common Data Model for HAB observations that will greatly enhance automated metadata generation, tailored data export, as well as National archive Automated archive of HAB observations through the NOAA National Data Centers Enhancement of the HABSOS data base to include multiple species (capability only) Bulk ingest of HABS observations vice single station entry in the Data Entry Tool

20 HABSOS as component A Regional, web-based data and information dissemination tool developed by EPA and NOAA and hosted at NOAA s National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC) Conceptually HABSOS is system to provide access to data that is to be used by the NOAA HABs Forecast System Provides data of interest to other agencies, partners investigating HABs.
