1 yay, bonus pt. because oops, no HO, book, heading this date =MP ES1 Investigating Weather Maps/Station Models Act# 10 Name Block Date Weather INTRODUCTION: Weather maps combine meteorological data from stations all over the nation or the world. Such stations are maintained in many places, including airports, schools, private homes, and remote locations. A weather map usually has an outline of the area surveyed, names of cities and towns where reporting stations are, and symbols representing weather conditions at each station. Data from many stations are used for large scale pictures of weather systems across a broad area. The map in this activity has only a fraction of those actually used by meteorologists. A station model is a set of meteorological (weather data) collected at a specific site and represented using a series of weather symbols. It represents a lot of data concisely and systematically, using known symbols. Each part of the symbol represents a specific type of weather information, and is always in the same place. Look at the letters next to the station model below to find the meaning of that location on the station model. a. Location - place name of weather station location (not included in all station models) b. Atmospheric Pressure measured in millibars (mb). Air pressure at sea level averages about 1013 mb (14.7 psi, or pounds per square inch). So as not to have long numbers on the maps, only the last 3 digits of the barometric pressure reading are included, and without the decimal point. Because of natural limits of air pressure range, between about 980 and 1050, it is easy to know the first digit. If those last 3 digits are less than 500, assume the air pressure starts with 10. (Ex. 152 means mb). If the last 3 digits >500, assume the first digit is 9 (Ex. 783 means mb). Note that the textbook station model fig 2, p 616, uses this convention. c. Wind Direction shows the direction from which the wind blows, just as a wind s name gives its source also. The round symbol is like an arrowhead, with the direction line the arrow shaft. The position of the shaft shows the source of the wind. d. Wind Speed measured in miles per hour (mph). Small lines are drawn like barbs extending from the direction line, which alone represents 1-5 mph. A short line from the direction shaft adds 5 mph. A longer line adds 10 mph. Add the lines to get the total wind speed. Note that the textbook wind speed table on, p. 513 lists the wind speed in knots, from nautical miles. These are slightly longer than land miles, so either count the lines or use the mph figures from this activity s sample on the next page. e. Temperature measured in F every hour at the station. f. Dew Point is the temperature in F at which air would be saturated and vapor would condense at that station then. # wrong /31@3 grade = fix, give pgs. & explain and do makeup in your own words for Do MU for CIC L FL Forgot grade abbreviations? 2 g. Cloud Cover amount is represented by the fraction of the circle that is darkened. Note the special symbol for obscured, such as by smoke from a forest fire. h. Present or Current Weather uses special symbols for various types of weather given below and in textbook. Concept practice: 5 pts 1. Look at the station model on pg 1, and describe the data for this station summarized by the symbols, including location, air pressure, wind direction & speed, temperature, dew point, cloud cover, present weather. Reread b on p. 1 on how to interpret the 3 digit air pressure abbreviation. The answer has 4 or 5 digits. If incorrect or missing, for makeup describe weather in Del Rio TX 2. Creating station models--some stations include data on other factors pressure change, past weather, and amount of precipitation as well. See the more detailed station model below for where to put these data. Using table to make a station model for A, C & E (others extra credit) in the boxes that follow (2 pts.@). If no information for a factor at one station, that part of the model will be blank. Note, p. 616 & 579 in text have windspeed in kts (knots, based on nautical miles) which are slightly longer than miles. Draw a weather symbol above #12 for the the town of Meteorogyville with the following weather: 5 pts air pressure of mb, dew point 40*F, temperature 54*F, wind 15 mph from the south east, cloud cover of 50%. (Makeup: Weather City: 966 mb, 60 F, 67 F, 40 mph from the north, 75% cloud cover, on the back of this sheet,) 12. Lightly shade in all areas on the map with 100% cloudiness or precipitation. Check when done (Makeup: all clear areas) 13. Write a 3 to 5 sentence description of the overall weather in the US shown by this weather map. Use the back if needed.
