Investigation in Exploring the Environment In Weather or Not? you predicted the weather using satellite images and other kinds of weather maps. The weather map below shows the weather forecast for Thursday, Nov. 6, The temperature on that day was 73 degrees Fahrenheit. Using the map, predict the weather in Northern Georgia for Friday, Nov. 8, a 1b What will the weather be like on Friday? A low pressure system is moving in with warm temperatures. A high pressure system is moving in with warm temperatures. There will be a low pressure system with the possibility of rain. There is the possibility of a cold front, but it should be sunny. Justify your answer.

2 Answer Explanation for Weather or Not? Quiz Answer Explanation Item 1. We can use what we know about weather trends to predict the weather. We can predict temperature, cloudiness, and precipitation (rain, snow, or sleet). Fronts can give information about temperature and cloudiness. Fronts are boundaries between masses of air with different densities, usually caused by temperature differences. There are two kinds of fronts: cold fronts and warm fronts. The weather map symbol for a cold front is a line with triangles pointing in the direction the cold air is moving. A cold front is a boundary with colder air replacing warmer air. Cold fronts can produce rain, snow, sleet, or freezing rain, even all four! We also use pressure regions to predict temperature, precipitation, and cloudiness. There are two types of pressure regions: high pressure and low pressure. The L on the map is an area of low pressure. Low pressure regions usually have clouds, rain, and strong winds. In Severe Weather: Hurricanes! we ll see how extreme low pressure areas can create the weather systems with spiraling, high-speed winds and rain that we call hurricanes.

4 Answer Explanation for Weather or Not? Curriculum-oriented Exam Items 7 While we can never know exactly what the weather will be like, we can study fronts, pressure systems, cloud cover, barometric pressure, and relative humidity to describe what the weather will probably be like. When there is a large amount of water in the atmosphere on a warm summer day, it can feel several degrees hotter. Meteorologists use relative humidity to describe the volume of water in the atmosphere at any time and help predict the heat index, which describes how many degrees hotter it feels to a person outside. Thus, the correct answer is d. 8 The map pictured has a key that can help you solve this problem. The key indicates that there is a cold front in Georgia, and it is raining in most of Georgia. We know that fronts move across the land and that cold air follows behind cold fronts. This cold front should move southeast across Georgia by tomorrow, and the rain will probably move with it.
