3 Kesler Science Station Lab Air Pressure If you have never used my Kesler Science Station Labs before please download the FREE Start-Up pack from my TPT store. It will provide you with all of the signage and best practices in order to run the station labs in your classroom. You can read my complete guide to how run effective station labs on my blog. The large directions cards included in this file are intended to be read by the leader of the group once the students get to the station. The smaller task cards can be read by another group member. I prefer that each student do their own lab write-up (included at the end of this file), so that they may use it for reference at a later date. The answer key is provided at the end of the document. Lastly, if any of the internet resources no longer work for some reason please let me know via at chris@keslerscience.com. I cannot guarantee that all resources will be available, but I tried to choose ones that have been around for many years.

4 Kesler Science Station Lab Air Pressure Teacher Directions Explore It! I will spend much of my time at this station making sure students are understanding the concepts. You will only need the weather map and barometer print-out included in this file. If you have a barometer you could set it up here to get the current barometric pressure. This is a great station to hang out at to clear up any misconceptions. Illustrate It! Make sure to include colored pencils or crayons at this station. Organize It! All of the cards are included for this station. Students should be encouraged to do the Research and Explore station before attempting this one. I like to label the backs with set numbers because they will get mixed up. Place this one next to the Explore It! Station. Write It! Students should be encouraged to do the Research and Explore station before attempting this one. Read It! Print several different copies (I use 6) of the reading passage so that multiple students can read at different paces Watch It! The video is on YouTube and my Google drive. 9 Read It! Station Directions Each member of the group will read the passage and answer the questions from the task cards on the lab sheet in the Read It! section. It is important to remember that the answers will come directly from the reading passage.

10 Air Pressure The air around you has weight, and it presses against everything it touches. That pressure is called atmospheric pressure, or air pressure. It is the force exerted on a surface by the air above it as gravity pulls it to Earth. Atmospheric pressure is commonly measured with a barometer. In a barometer, a column of mercury in a glass tube rises or falls as the weight of the atmosphere changes. Meteorologists describe the atmospheric pressure by how high the mercury rises. An atmosphere (atm) is a unit of measurement equal to the average air pressure at sea level at a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit). One atmosphere is 1,013 millibars, or 760 millimeters (29.92 inches) of mercury. Atmospheric pressure drops as altitude increases. The atmospheric pressure on Denali, Alaska, is about half that of Honolulu, Hawai'i. Honolulu is a city at sea level. Denali, also known as Mount McKinley, is the highest peak in North America. As the pressure decreases, the amount of oxygen available to breathe also decreases. At very high altitudes, atmospheric pressure and available oxygen get so low that people can become sick and even die. Mountain climbers use bottled oxygen when they ascend very high peaks. They also take time to get used to the altitude because quickly moving from higher pressure to lower pressure can cause decompression sickness. Aircraft create artificial pressure in the cabin so passengers remain comfortable while flying. Air pressure changes with the weather. In fact, it's one of the most important factors that determines what the weather is like.. When a low-pressure system moves into an area, it usually leads to cloudiness, wind, and precipitation. High-pressure systems usually lead to fair, calm weather.

16 Explore It! Station Directions One member of the group will read the task cards in order. The group will be responsible for completing each of the tasks that are being read. Each member of the group will then write their conclusions down on the lab sheet in the Explore It! section.

17 A barometer is an instrument that measures the atmospheric (air) pressure. Air has weight and can be measured. The unit of measurement is often either Hg (inches of Mercury) or mb (millibars). 1. Use the barometer provided and find the Hg and mb readings. 2. What type of weather would be outside? On a weather map high pressure areas are marked with a blue H. Low pressure areas are marked with a red L. High Pressure Low Pressure Use the weather map and barometer key to answer the following questions. 1. What would you expect the weather to be like in San Diego, CA? 2. Green Bay, WI? 3. Norfolk, VA? Some weather maps have lines on them showing the air pressure. These lines are called isobars. At each point on the isobar the air pressure is the exact same. 1. Compare the air pressure between Portland and Dallas. 2. Compare the air pressure between Green Bay and Houston.

20 Illustrate It! Station Directions Each member of the group will draw a quick sketch on the lab sheet that shows they understand the concept being taught. Use the colored pencils and markers that are provided. The directions for the sketch are provided on the task card at the table.

21 Illustrate It! Station Directions Use the colored pencils to draw symbols for 2 areas of high pressure and 2 areas of low pressure over 4 different cities. Label the cities. Describe the weather in each of the different cities.

Each group will organize the cards. Each of the cards will be used and will create 2 columns. Have your teacher sign off you your Organize it section after it has been checked. 29 Air Pressure Answer Key Watch It! Task Card #2: A table doesn t crush under air pressure because air pressure doesn t just move down. Air pressure also pushes the table up from the bottom keeping it balanced. Task Card #3: The card stays on the bottom of the glass because the air pressure pushing up on the glass is greater than the weight of the water in the glass. Task Card 4: As your lungs expand and increase in volume the air pressure from outside pushes air into your lungs. When they contract air is pushed back out your noes and mouth. Without air pressure we could not breath.
