College Sports Madness identifies the players who have made the greatest impact to their team from each conference and on a national basis each week. Leach, a sophomore from Easton, Kansas (McLouth HS) recorded a hit in every game of the Jayhawk Invitational (March 10-13) including four multi-hit games, and currently holds a seven-game hitting streak. She currently sits in second for the Roos in multi-hit games (6), and is tied for the team-lead in multi-rbi games (4). She leads the team with a.441 batting average,.735 slugging percentage, and.500 on-base percentage. WEARING IT Junior Alex Gale ranks 27th in the nation in hit-by-pitch per game and first in the WAC, wearing it six times in 18 games played, equating to getting hit by a pitch 0.33 times per game. Helping her get to that number, she was hit by two pitches twice this season, against Drake (Feb. 27) and against Saint Louis (March 5). Gale is no stranger to getting beaned, as she has done so 17 times in her three years, including three times against CSU Bakersfield last season (May 7). GETTIN IN THE GROVE Sophomore pitcher Amber Grove has found her groove in the circle this season, already tallying five wins, more than halfway to her total from a year ago (8). She recorded a season-high eight strikeouts against Saint Louis (March 5), one shy of a career-best. Against SEMO (March 6), Grove allowed just one hit in six innings, in a 9-0 victory. HOME RUN MONTAGE While UMKC has started off slower this year than last year in the home run category, hitting 10 through 19 games as compared to 23 last year in the same amount of games. The Roos have picked up the pace as of late, hitting seven in the last seven games. KELLEY TABS WAC WEEKLY AWARD Katie Kelley was named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week for February This is Kelley s first honor of the season and fifth of her career (four Hitter, one Pitcher). A senior utility player from Coweta, Oklahoma, Kelley hit.538 with seven hits, two doubles, three runs scored and nine RBIs over four games. She posted a.692 slugging percentage and a.600 on-base percentage and two walks. Kelley recorded a hit in every game, bringing her hitting streak to five games. In a win over Drake, she recorded a team-high six RBIs, the most by a UMKC player since she tallied seven in a game last season. ALL OF THE RUNS The Roos put up big numbers on the scoreboard against Drake (Feb. 28) in a 12-5 victory. The 12 runs from UMKC marks the most scored since a 17-3 five-inning win against Utah Valley last season (April 24). Leading the attack for UMKC was senior Katie Kelley, who put up a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and six RBIs. PUMMELING THE PIGS After losing in an extra-inning game to Drake to open the Razorback Invitational on February 27, the Roos bounced back to take down the SEC s Arkansas on their home field, winning the game 9-4. Sophomore Ashlin O Brien and freshman Bri Sims each tallied their first-career home runs in the win, and sophomore Amber Grove went the distance in the circle, striking out four Razorbacks along the way to earn her first win of the season. BULLARD S BIG WIN Freshman pitcher Lacie Bullard picked up her first-collegiate win on Monday, February 15 against Hawaii. Bullard went the distance, allowing just one run on five hits, while striking out four batters. The freshman s victory couldn t have come at a better time, as the Roos were winless on the season, and needed a big outing from their freshman to get back on track. What s more, the victory proved to be the first over Hawaii in UMKC history. HECK OF A DEBUT Redshirt freshman Rachel Pate sat out the entire 2015 season due to injury, so when she got the chance to finally display her talents on the diamond, she didn t disappoint. Stepping into the box with two runners on and her team down three in the season-opener against Ole Miss, Pate smashed a homer over the left-center field wall to knot the score at four. KELLEY NAMED PRESEASON PITCHER OF THE YEAR Kangaroo senior Katie Kelley was named the Western Athletic Conference Preseason Pitcher of the Year by the league s coaches. Kelley returns as the most experienced pitcher from last season, logging 137 innings in Along with her toughness in the circle, she also brings big numbers to the batter s box, tallying 16 homers and 63 RBIs last season, leading the team in both categories. ROOS PICKED FOURTH IN WAC COACHES POLL UMKC was picked to finish fourth in the Western Athletic Conference Preseason coaches poll, released Wednesday, February 3. New Mexico State took the top spot in the preseason poll with 25 points and five first-place votes. Smith Neal led the Kangaroos to a overall record, tied for the third-most wins in school history, and coached three players to All-WAC honors, with Brooke Parker and Cinda Ramos being named to the first-team, while Katie Kelley earned a spot on the second-team. The team s 22 victories were tied for the third most in a single season in the program s history. Smith Neal s squad picked up its play late in the 2010 campaign, posting a 14-4 record over the final 18 games.
