Cnsequently, under recent entering freshman class emllments, apprximately 629 spaces in each freshman class have been eligible fr reservatin fr all special admissins, including studentathletes. Subsequently, n ctber 1, 1983, the Senate received a recmmendatin frm the Ad Hc Cmmittee n Admissins and Educatinal Prgrams fr StudentAthletes that the Directr f Admissins and Recrds cntinuusly mnitr the prgress f studentathletes admitted under the special admissins plicy and that, at the end f every three years, the Directr reprt t the Senate. This reprt is made in fulfillment f that recmmendatin, the previus reprt being received by the Senate n April 19, Backgrund Five majr develpments have affected the admissins f studentathletes t this campus: The enactment f CAA Prpsitin 48; the preliminary evaluatin f academic credentials f mst recruits prir t their signing a letter f intent; the establishment f the CAA InitialEligibility Clearinghuse; the initiatin f the Transitin Prgram with its Bridge and Academic Year cmpnents; and frmatin f the Cmmittee n the Admissin f studentathletes (CASA). 1) Implementatin f Prpsitin 48 in fall 1987 established criteria fr eligibility and prvided a reasnable starting pint in the cnsideratin f a prspective studentathlete's chance fr academic success. nder current rules (implemented fa995) f that prgram, a qualifier must cmplete 13 cre curses in specific subject areas, attain at least a 2.5 gradepint average (A=4.) in thse curses, and earn either an ACT cmpsite scre f 17 r a ttal scre n the SAT f 82 (after 4/1/95). A partial qualifier is ne wh presents an verall cumulative high schl gradepint average f at least a 2.5 n an A=4. scale, but wh fails t meet the required average in cre curses and/ r fails t achieve the minimum test scre requirement. 2) In 1993 the preliminary evaluatin by an assistant directr in the ffice f Admissins and Recrds f llie academic credentials f mst prspective recruits prir t their signing a letter f intend prvided a "red flag" t the Divisin f Intercllegiate Athletics abut pssible partial qualifiers and nnqualifiers early in the recruitment prcess. 3) Beginning fall 1994 all freshman student athletes were reviewed fr initial eligibility by the CAA InitialEligibility Clearinghuse. 4) Intrduced in 1986, the Transitin Prgram prvides needed assistance each year t 1 admitted freshman students with academic weakness that culd place them " at risk" if they were permitted t enter the niversity withut such a resurce. A maximum f 25 f these spaces each year may be used fr recruited studentathletes.

2 The Transitin Prgram has tw cmpnents: a) Summer Bridge, a sixweek residential summer sessin spnsred by the Cllege f Liberal Arts and Sciences, engages 5 students in intensive cursewrk in

This experience is prvided at n cst t the students. b) nder its Academic Year cmpnent, the Transitin Prgram, in cperatin with varius departments and clleges, spnsrs special curse sectins tailred t meet the needs f special admissin students; these classes emll a small number f students and thus permit and encurage greater studentteacher interactin. Additinal academic supprt is prvided by the ffice f Minrity Student Affairs. A student wh successfully cmpletes fur semesters in the Transitin Prgram with a "C" r better average has an admissins space reserved in the cllege and curriculum f his r her chice. The Transitin Prgram has demnstrated its ability t prvide the develpmental assistance and careful mnitring necessary t student success. 5) The Cmmittee n the Admissin f StudentAthletes (CASA) was frmed in 1983 at the directin f Chancellr Jhn Cribbet; cmmittee members are appinted by the Vice Chancellr fr Academic Affairs. Vting members are assistant and assciate deans f the clleges that admit new freshmen, plus the Directr f Admissins and Recrds. (A list f current members is attached. ) The cmmittee is charged t review studentathlete applicatins requiring special admissin cnsideratin, including the fllwing applicant categries: a) Thse wh lack ne r mre curses required t meet high schl subject pattern requirements. b) Thse whse rankinclass and admissin test scre predict less than a neintw chance f achieving a "C" average fr the first semester n campus. c) Thse with a scre f 17 r lwer n either the ACT English r mathematics tests: such applicants must be reviewed fr pssible placement int the Transitin Prgram's Academic Year cmpnent. d) Thse with a scre f 15 r lwer n the Act English test r a scre f 16 r lwer n the ACT mathematics test: such applicants must be cnsidered fr pssible placement in the Summer Bridge cmpnent. In each case, the cmmittee seeks t determine whether the student's bjective academic recrd and demnstrated academic mtivatin, plus the special supprt services available, will cmbine t give him r her a reasnable chance fr academic success. Admissin must be apprved by the dean f the cllege in which the student wishes t emll. Mst imprtantly, the cmmittee has the authrit1j t deny admissin t the campus, and any such decisin is binding fr all clleges.

3 3 bservatins 1 CASA actin is nt required fr the majrity f studentathlete applicatins, and the percentage requiring such actin is dwn slightly. During the past threeyear perid, studentathlete applicatins requiring CASA review ranged frm 28.% t 33.7% per year, as cmpared t a range f 39.8% t 49.7% per year ver the prir threeyear perid. 2. The primary cause f referral t CASA was applicant failure t meet the required predicted gradepint average f 2. (A=4); 5.3% f CASA referrals were due t this factr. The remaining referral reasns were (1) deficiency in meeting the high schl subject pattern requirement, 27.2%; (2) pssible Transitin Prgram, 18.3%; and (3) pssible Bridge Cmpnent requirement, 8.3%. (See Table 1). 3. inety percent (465) f all studentathletes emlled between fall 1999 and fall 21 remain in schl: f the 465 new studentathletes emlled during this perid, nly 48 are nt registered fr the current semester. This includes 11 wh were drpped fr academic reasns and 37 wh withdrew while n "clear" status. 4. With the academic and persnal supprt prvided by the niversity via the Transitin/Bridge Prgram, 88.9% (4 f 45) f studentathletes admitted and emlled under that prgram's auspices during the perid cvered by this reprt remain registered students. Eightyfive percent f thse students have cumulative gradepint averages abve 2., including five percent abve 3.. These figures are testimny t the effectiveness f the Transitin Prgram.
