I m excited t d sme summer reading f my wn! Belw yu will find guidelines fr cmpleting a dialectical jurnal. I ften refer t this as a duble entry jurnal (DEJ). Yu will cmplete ne fr 1984 by Gerge Orwell as well as ne fr yur AP Reading List selectin. Specific instructins: Cmplete a dialectical jurnal fr each reading assignment. Use all labels at least nce in each jurnal. Try t select three t five passages frm each chapter f yur nvel. If yur selectin frm the AP Reading List is a play, select three t five passages per scene. I feel yu shuld have a minimum f thirty entries. I realize all wrks vary in length and number f chapters; therefre, I trust yu t pull adequate entries that are representative f yur selectin as a whle. The same instructins apply t 1984 by Gerge Orwell. This nvel is divided int three parts with each part brken int chapters f varying length. A minimum f thirty entries is required.
3 The fllwing dialectical jurnal infrmatin was fund at cal-jurnal DIALECTICAL JOURNALS The term dialectic means the art r practice f arriving at the truth by using cnversatin invlving questin and answer. Think f yur dialectical jurnal as a series f cnversatins with yur text. The prcess is meant t help yu develp a better understanding f the text by allwing yu t incrprate yur persnal respnses, as well as yur understanding f plt, character theme, tnes, etc. I hpe yu will find that it is a useful way t prcess what yu re reading, prepare yurself fr grup discussin, and gather textual evidence fr the AP written respnses we will cmplete when class begins. PROCEDURE: As yu read, chse passages (shrt r lng) that stand ut t yu and recrd them in the left-hand clumn f the chart (ALWAYS include page numbers and paragraph numbers). In the right clumn, write yur respnse t the text (ideas/insights, questins, reflectins, and cmments n each passage) Yu must label yur respnses using the fllwing cdes: (Q) Questin ask abut smething in the passage that is unclear (C) Cnnect make a cnnectin t yur life, the wrld, r anther text (P) Predict anticipate what will ccur based n what s in the passage (CL) Clarify answer earlier questins r cnfirm/disaffirm a predictin (R) Reflect think deeply abut what the passage means in a brad sense nt just t the characters in the stry/authr f the article. What cnclusins can yu draw abut the wrld, abut human nature, r just the way things wrk? (E) Evaluate - make a judgment abut what the authr is trying t say

5 RESPONDING TO THE TEXT: Yu can respnd t the text in a variety f ways. The mst imprtant thing t remember is that yur bservatins shuld be specific and detailed. Yu can write as much as yu want fr each entry. Yu can chse t type yur jurnal and print it befre turning in, r yu can write by hand. Higher Level Respnses: Analyze the text fr use f literary devices (tne, structure, style, imagery) Make cnnectins between different characters r events in the text Make cnnectins t a different text (r film, sng, etc ) Discuss the wrds, ideas, r actins f the authr r character(s) Cnsider an event r descriptin frm the perspective f a different character Analyze a passage and its relatinship t the stry as a whle
