1 C NT CT A Publication of the Wyoming Geological Association Volume V, No. 12 December 2013 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Mike Hawks Fellow WGA Members, As my last le er to WGA members, I want to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Directors for their hard work and commitment. It has been an honor and privilege to serve with them as President of the WGA. Please thank Julia Lemaster, Phil Nickerson, Barb Atkinson, Michael Bingle Davis, and Mike s much be er half, Marron Bingle Davis, for their service. Julia Lemaster will be taking over to clean up my mess a er the first of the year. The WGA Christmas Party will be held at the Casper Petroleum Club on December 4 at 6:00 pm. Hors d oeuvres will be served in lieu of a sit down dinner. The winner of November s quiz was Cal VanHolland, Chief Geologist for Ur Energy in Casper. Below are the ques ons and Cal s answers: Erosion of what mountain range is primarily responsible for the deposi on of the Ba le Springs Member in Wyoming? Answer Granite Mountains What was the deposi onal environment? Answer Alluvial fan, braided streams What has been ac vely mined from the Ba le Springs? Answer Uranium What gemstone can be found in the Ba le Springs? Answer Jade I have to admit, Cal caught me with an error in my quiz; I erroneously called it the Ba le Springs versus the proper name of Ba le Spring. Oops! This Month s Quiz: As promised, I am upping the prize by offering the new Wyoming Stra graphic Nomenclature Chart to the winner of this month s quiz. The full package will include the wall hanging and CD containing the chart and associated data sheets, which are hyperlinked to the chart. 1. Kimberlite was first discovered, described and named in what country? 2. Who owned the farm where the first discovery of kimberlite occurred? 3. Kimberlite is unusual in the fact it is an intra cratonic pipe or? (Fill in the blank) 4. Name two indicator minerals? 5. What is the crystal form of diamond? 6. What country produces the greatest amount of gem quality diamonds? Again, the first person to me the answer will be this month s winner. Answers and the winner will be included in next month s newsle er. You can e mail me at mikehawks@msn.com. Good luck! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and your families. Abstract: The Greasewood Field is located in Niobrara County and has produced over 1.9 million barrels of oil since its discovery by Walter Van Norman in The field produces from the Morrison Formation, making it unique. In 2008, Timberline Production Company initiated a water flood which has had a great impact on oil recovery. Current mapping indicates the field is not completely developed and continued expansion is likely. Page 2 CONTACT December 2013
