2 AUGUST 2013 LUNCHEON SPEAKER ABSTRACTS 2 Aug Speaker: Luke Shafer, Master s Student, University of Wyoming Title: Injection Related Fracture Permeability at the Rock Springs Uplift CO2 Sequestration Characterization Site, SW Wyoming Biography: Luke was born in Fallbrook, California in He attended California State University, Long Beach for his undergraduate work and received B.S. in Earth Science with an emphasis in structural geology and a minor in applied mathematics in Luke started the master s program at the University of Wyoming in the summer of 2010 and will defend his thesis on August 23 in Laramie, Wyoming. While at UW, he was a teaching assistant for the 2011 and 2012 summer field camps and had internships with ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company and Chevron in their Deep Water Exploration and Major Projects (DWEP) Company. This upcoming October he will start a job with Chevron in their DWEP Company in Houston, Texas. Luke s hobbies include yoga, backpacking, rock climbing, and running. 9 Aug Speaker: Paul Heller, Professor, Department Chair at University of Wyoming Title: Evaluating driving forces of basin formation in the Central Rocky Mountains Biography: Paul got his Bachelors of Science in geology from the University of New York in He then travelled to Western Washington University to receive his Masters of Science in Finally, he was awarded a doctorate in geology from the University of Arizona in He is currently a professor and the department chair at the University of Wyoming specializing in sedimentation and tectonics. 3 AUGUST 2013 LUNCHEON SPEAKER ABSTRACTS 16 Aug Speaker: Dana Pertermann, Professor of Geology and Anthropology, Western Wyoming Community College Title: Geology of Linwood: The Town that Drowned Biography: Dana L Pertermann, currently Associate Professor of Anthropology & Geology at Western Wyoming Community College, received her doctorate in Anthropology from Texas A&M University, specializing in Conflict Archaeology. She has a MA in Historical Archaeology from Illinois State University, and a BA in Geology from the University of Minnesota. She is in the process of finishing a MS in Geology, and has a book coming out on Conflict Event Theory with colleague Holly K. Norton. 23 Aug Speaker: Marron Bingle-Davis, Geologist, Sunshine Valley Petroleum Corporation Title: Dakota and other fossil resources of North Dakota Biography: Originally from White Lake, Michigan, Marron completed a B.S. at Michigan State University in geology in She got an M.S. from the University of North Dakota focusing on species concepts of closely related unionoid species of the Hell Creek Formation in eastern Montana in She finished her Ph.D., also at the University of North Dakota, in 2012, which focused on the uppermost Cretaceous and lowermost Paleocene infraand intertrappean continental mollusks of the Deccan Plateau of India. She currently works as a petroleum geologist at Sunshine Valley Petroleum Corporation in Casper, Wyoming and enjoys outdoor activities and watching movies with her husband and 2-year-old daughter. 30 Aug No Meeting - Labor Day Holiday! The Intermediate Mapping class is designed for those participants who have completed the Petra Introductory course and are ready to advance their use of mapping features, gridding, and computational options available in the PETRA Map module. Workflows using contouring algorithms, gird to grid manipulations, computations, residual and curvature processes will be discussed. Map options such as directional well posting, drainage radii, rose diagram and lineament analysis, dip and strike calculation and presentation, 3D visualization, and posting of engineering data may be offered as class participants request. A discussion of overlay options and management may also be reviewed. (This class is designed with professional Geoscientist in mind).
