2 OCTOBER 2012 LUNCHEONL SPEAKER ABSTRACTS 5 Oct Title: Speaker: 2012 L Title: A Study of the Ancestral Colorado River Deposits on Grand Mesa, Mesa County, Colorado Speaker: Con Trumbell, Bureau of Land Management, Casper, Wyoming. Biography: Con Trumbull, a Casper native, attended Casper College working towards a A.S. in geology while also spending his time volunteering at the Tate Museum and participating in many WGA functions. Upon receiving his degree, Trumbull attended Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colorado to obtain his B.S. degree. While at CMU, Trumbull completed several research projects including the river gravel study on the Grand Mesa that is the focus of the talk. He currently works for the Bureau of Land Management as a mining engineer while also working on the family ranch. Abstract: Gravel site found along the Grand Mesa in Mesa County, western Colorado show evidence of river systems that flowed through an ancestral grand valley 11 million years ago. Since the 1930s, one of these river systems was thought to be an ancestral Colorado River flowing across a Miocene floodplain, however, very little evidence existed to support this claim. The study that this talk is based on combined field work with research into previous studies to determine if it could be determined to what river system the gravels originated from. Using modern river analogs, previous studies, aerial image analysis, and detrital zircon analysis, Trumbull and his advisor were able to provide evidence to support the idea of an 11 million year old Colorado River. The study site now represents the oldest terrace deposits of the Colorado River. The process of the study is now being used by other students on other river systems including the Green River in southeastern Wyoming. 11 Oct SME Presentation - this event is held on a Thursday evening - To Be Announced 12 Oct Title: Title: Using Paleogeographic Maps to Portray Phanerozoic Geologic and Paleotectonic History of Western North America Speaker: Ronald C. Blakey, Professor Emeritus, Northern Arizona University; Colorado Plateau Geosystems Biography: to Ron Blakey is recently Professor Emeritus at Northern Arizona University following 34 years of teaching and research in the Department of Geology. During his tenure at NAU, he studied and published on the stratigraphy and sedimentology of many Late Paleozoic and Mesozoic rock units on the Colorado Plateau. His specific interests are eolian and fluvial depositional systems. This nurtured his interest in paleogeography and for the last 15 years, he has been heavily involved in producing paleogeographic maps that range from regional to global in scope. Many of these maps appear on his two websites, jan.ucc.nau.edu/~rcb7 and cpgeosystems.com. His latest endeavors have merged these two disciplines into books published by the Grand Canyon Association, "Ancient Landscapes of the Colorado Plateau" and Springer, Plate Tectonics, Continental Drift, and Mountain Building. His degrees are from Wisconsin (BS), Utah (MS), and Iowa (PhD). Abstract: Paleogeographic maps provide clear, concise pictures of the evolving complex geologic events of Western North America. Time slices are selected to show critical stages in the geologic history thereby providing a continuous view of the evolution of the region and clearly showing sequences of paleogeography and paleotectonics. The maps are particularly effective in demonstrating the geometry and history of terrane accretion and the affects of accretionary events on the growth of Western North America from Devonian to Present. The maps are also powerful tools for comparing varying or contrasting models of various terrane-accretion events and for showing cause and effect across broad geologic provinces. Other maps (isopach, paleogeology, facies, paleocurrent, etc.) can be used in conjunction with paleogeographic maps to further explain the geologic history. The models presented here are derived and modified from the geologic literature. Data is plotted on basemaps and paleogeography is cloned from digital elevation maps to match the inferred distribution of landforms at given times and places. The paleogeography is shown in palinspastic restoration with reference to present political boundaries. The maps are finished in a fashion to show how paleogeography might have appeared as if seen from space. Colors suggest paleovegetation and inferred paleoclimate. Water depths are shown in shades of blue from evidence presented in the literature and presumed modern analogs. Although maps are assigned a specific geologic age, ranges are given to suggest the interval for which the maps are valid. The resulting series of paleogeographic maps provides a coherent picture of the geologic and tectonic history of Western North America that respects known and inferred geologic rates and geodynamic models. 3 17 Oct Title: Title: Hydraulic Fracturing of Horizontal Well Realizing the Paradigm Shift That Has Been 30 Years in Development Speaker: C. Mark Pearson, L Liberty Resources LLC; SPE Distinguished Lecturer Biography: Dr. C. Mark Pearson is an SPE distinguished member who has over 30 years experience in both the E&P and service industries. He is a well known industry expert in the field of well completion and stimulation technology having published over 30 technical papers and having received a number of industry accolades for the economic impacts of his work. He is President of Liberty Resources LLC, a Denver-based independent E&P company currently focussed on a 4-rig drilling and completion program in the Bakken Oil Shale of ND where he and his team have applied multi-stage completion and stimulation technology over the past 3 years to the extent that 35-stage horizontal wells are now standard for field development. Abstract: "The latest multi-stage well completion and stimulation technologies have revolutionized the development of unconventional resources." Horizontal drilling as a field development technique was pioneered in the early-1980's. As drilling technology advanced, the industry was rapidly able to increase the extended reach of wells and the length of lateral drilled. However, for much of this time, the completion was limited to single zone techniques employing chemical and pressure diversion technologies in an attempt to stimulate the lateral section. Gradually, the industry went through a phased period of testing culminating in the mechanical isolation technologies of "sliding sleeve" and "plug and perf" completions. The outcome of this has been a paradigm shift in unconventional field development where the use of horizontal wells with 15 to 40 stage mechanically isolated stimulation zones has resulted in a step change in field development costs and as a consequence resulted in the US horizontal rig-count reaching over 50% of all active rigs drilling. The presentation is divided into three sections: (1) A review of horizontal well stimulation technology development - including the authors first-hand experience of west Texas tests in the 80's, North Slope Alaska wells in the 90's, and current applications in a variety of unconventional resources. (2) A discussion of the two main types of multi-stage completion techologies being employed together with the application of both crosslinked and slickwater fracturing. (3) A review of current applications and results. 19 Oct No Meeting - due to presentation on Thursday, Oct 17th 24 Oct Title: OCTOBER 2012 LUNCHEON SPEAKER ABSTRACTS CTOBER 2012 L Title: Update on Wyoming Uranium Mining Projects - Wyoming State Geological Survey Speaker: Bob Gregory, Energy and Mineral Resources, Wyoming Geological Survey Biography: Robert is a uranium geologist at the Wyoming State Geological Survey and has been employed there since Mr. Gregory was born in Montana, and spent his childhood years there, Colorado, and Casper, Wyoming, where he graduated from Natrona County High School. He attended Casper College and then the University of Wyoming where he earned a Bachelor s degree in physical and sedimentary geology, and a Master s degree in metamorphic petrology. Robert is licensed professional geologist in Wyoming and a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. In addition to uranium geology, Robert has gained experience in coal, oil and gas, metal ore deposits, kimberlites, and industrial minerals, and has participated in a wide variety of investigative studies and mapping projects in these areas. He also has extensive experience in a wide variety of geological analyses including petrography, geochemistry and crystallographic techniques including x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and electron microprobe analysis. The recent upturn in uranium spot prices has resulted in a large number of planned or proposed mining operations in Wyoming. Since about 2005, prices of yellowcake (U3O8) have risen from less than $10.00 per pound to nearly $ in less than five years. Prices have more recently dropped down to more stable prices as buyers and sellers appear to generally meet common ground in the $ $55.00 range. Recent prices are still high enough to keep uranium mining companies moving forward on new projects here in Wyoming and other states, as well as in dozens of other nations. Wyoming currently leads the nation in uranium production and also contains the nation s largest reserve base. Uranium mining projects are being developed in several basins and historic mining districts around Wyoming. If spot prices remain stable or experience a healthy increase over the coming years, Wyoming should increase its production levels significantly. Ever-increasing global demand for electricity, and nuclear power in particular, seems to bode well for the Wyoming uranium mining industry. Page 3

20 WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT HALLOWEEN ALLOWEEN? Ancient Roots of Halloween How it all began Some of the most ancient prac ces of Halloween date back more than 2000 years. The Celts who lived in the North Eastern region of Europe, areas, which now include Ireland, France and the UK, held a pagan fes val on the 31 of October. These rituals were held on this date as a celebra on to mark the upcoming New Year which by their calendar began on the 1st of November. They called this fes val Samhain, which translates to mean "summer's end". The ancient Celts believed that on this day the spirits of the dead could rise and create mayhem. This was also the night when their spiritual leaders, the Druids, could talk to the dead and predict events of the New Year. The Celts knew that many of them would not survive the long winter months. They looked to their religious leaders for any informa on about what to expect. This celebra on also marked the end of the harvest. In that way, it was similar to our own Thanksgiving. It was a me to celebrate the hard work of the season and enjoy the bounty that it produced. The bonfire was a major part of the fes val. The Druids would light the fire, and then the celebrants would burn grains and por ons of the harvest as tributes. This was also the me when they would cull their livestock. They knew that many animals could not survive the winter and therefore, opted to slaughter the animals instead. Due to the frost, the Celts knew that the meat from the animals could now be stored and eaten later. They would burn the bones of a few of the animals as part of the ritual. Part of the fes val included celebrants wearing costumes. These costumes were most o en made from animal hides. They wore these costumes in hopes that they would appease the spirits. Part of the fes val demanded that once the bonfire had been lit all other fires in the village be ex nguished. The villagers would relight their fire from the communal bonfire at the end of the ceremony. This was a way of bonding all the village families together. Another common prac ce was to have a second sacred bonfire lit close to the first one. The villagers would walk between the fires to purify themselves. Ca le and other animals would also be made to walk between the sacred fires. In about 43 AD, the Celts were conquered by the Romans. The Romans had their own rituals to honor and appease the dead. One of their fes vals was known as Feralia. This ceremony involved Romans going to the site of the deceased and leaving a number of tributes. The offerings were supposed to include a bit of bead, some salt, a few seeds of grain and a wreath. There are many who believe that contact with the Celts ini aled a blending of the two ceremonies. Chris anity had a major impact on this celebra on. In the year 601 AD, Pope Gregory, the 1St issued a brilliant edict. Rather than trying to convert pagans by destroying or oblitera ng their beliefs, the missionaries were instructed to use the na ve celebra ons and prac ces to their advantage. The fact that All Saints' Day is celebrated the day-a er Halloween is no coincidence. The Catholic Church selected this day as a way of drawing a en on away from the Cel c rituals held on the 31st of October. November 1st is meant to recognize all Saints, especially those who do not have their own specific day of celebra on. The actual effect was not quite what the Church expected. The missionaries used the fact that the Celts not only recognized good spirits, but evil ones as well in their rituals. The missionaries preached that the spirits, which were a part of the Samhain rituals, were all evil and that those who worshiped them were also evil or devil worshippers. Halloween became associated with evil spirits and the following day which was the Chris an holiday was associated with the Saints. The old beliefs con nued, although the celebra ons had altered. Worshippers used the day to ward away wandering evil spirits. The day became associated with witches, demons and fairies. In another a empt to diminish the popularity of this celebra on, the Church introduced All Souls Day. This celebra on took place on the 2nd of November. This addi on had virtually no effect. People con nued to celebrate on the 31st though the name was changed from Samhain to All Hallows Eve. Today in North America this is s ll one of the most popular days of the year, especially for young children. Source: Page 20
