3 AUGUST 2012 LUNCHEON SPEAKER ABSTRACTS UGUST 2012 L 10 Aug Title: 2013: The Year of Living Dangerously. Supply challenges facing the Oil and Gas Industry Speaker: Gary Stewart, CEO at Melange International, LLC Biography: Gary Stewart is the CEO and owner of Mélange International. Mélange is a 25 year old successful private oil and gas exploration company located in Denver, Colorado. Mélange focuses on the upstream sector of the oil & gas business, and has been involved in over 34 new field discoveries in the Rocky Mountain region. The primary focus of the company is discovering giant oil and gas fields. In 2012, it is anticipated that Mélange and its associated entities will be involved in over 250 wells located in 4 western states. In addition to domestic exploration, the Mélange has been involved in a number of potential oil and gas projects located in the former Soviet Union, West Africa, Trinidad and Vietnam. Mr. Stewart has spent years extensively traveling through and working in parts of the former Soviet Union. Prior to starting Mélange 25 years ago, Mr. Stewart worked as an exploration geologist for Exxon Co, USA. Mr. Stewart was a member of President Clinton s Energy Advisory Team for 8 years. Mr. Stewart earned a M.S. degree in geology from the University of Oklahoma and a B.S. degree in geology from Arizona State University. Mr. Stewart is a current member of the Advisory Board to the School of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Oklahoma. 17 Aug NO MEETING WGA FIELD CONFERENCE IN YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK!!! 24 Aug Title: Update on Wyoming Uranium Mining Projects Wyoming State Geological Survey Speaker: Bob Gregory, Energy and Mineral Resources, Wyoming Geological Survey Biography: Robert is a uranium geologist at the Wyoming State Geological Survey and has been employed there since Mr. Gregory was born in Montana, and spent his childhood years there, Colorado, and Casper, Wyoming, where he graduated from Natrona County High School. He attended Casper College and then the University of Wyoming where he earned a Bachelor s degree in physical and sedimentary geology, and a Master s degree in metamorphic petrology. Robert is licensed professional geologist in Wyoming and a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. In addition to uranium geology, Robert has gained experience in coal, oil and gas, metal ore deposits, kimberlites, and industrial minerals, and has participated in a wide variety of investigative studies and mapping projects in these areas. He also has extensive experience in a wide variety of geological analyses including petrography, geochemistry and crystallographic techniques including x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and electron microprobe analysis. The recent upturn in uranium spot prices has resulted in a large number of planned or proposed mining operations in Wyoming. Since about 2005, prices of yellowcake (U3O8) have risen from less than $10.00 per pound to nearly $ in less than five years. Prices have more recently dropped down to more stable prices as buyers and sellers appear to generally meet common ground in the $ $55.00 range. Recent prices are still high enough to keep uranium mining companies moving forward on new projects here in Wyoming and other states, as well as in dozens of other nations. Page 3

4 AUGUST 2012 LUNCHEONL SPEAKER ABSTRACTS Continued from Page 3 ) 2012 L Wyoming currently leads the nation in uranium production and also contains the nation s largest reserve base. Uranium mining projects are being developed in several basins and historic mining districts around Wyoming. If spot prices remain stable or experience a healthy increase over the coming years, Wyoming should increase its production levels significantly. Ever-increasing global demand for electricity, and nuclear power in particular, seems to bode well for the Wyoming uranium mining industry. 30 Aug Title: Adventures in Mongolia: a geologist s prospective Speaker: Kristl Hoksbergen, Project Geologist, Worldwide Exploration, Cameco Resources Biography: Kristl graduated in 2004 with a Bsc Honours in Geology from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada where she currently lives. She has been working for Cameco Corporation since 2002, and has been involved in projects in Nunavut, Quebec, North West Territories, Saskatchewan, Finland, and the USA. Her most recent posting was a three year fly in fly out position at the Cameco Mongolia exploration office where she ran programs on three different regions composed of nine different exploration licenses. She is currently working at the Cameco Resources office in Casper Wyoming as part of a work exchange program. Mongolia is one of the world s fastest growing economies with a vast supply of natural resources. The country is relatively underexplored and is best known for its world class deposits of gold, coal and copper, as well as historic production of uranium. The country is also reliant on agriculture and animal husbandry for a large percentage of the economy. Just under half of the total population lives within the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, while a substantial amount of people still live the traditional nomadic ways in the countryside. Geographically Mongolia contains a variety of environments, including the Gobi desert in the south, the mountainous forests in the north and the extensive steppes in between. Mongolia is home to some of the greatest ranges in temperature on earth, from blistering heat (>122 F) in the summer to bitter cold (-50F) in winter. The country is landlocked, and sandwiched between two of the world s super powers; Russia and China. Since gaining freedom from the Soviet Union in the 1990 s Mongolia continues to struggle to develop a market economy of its own while properly handling the unprecedented boom in the resource sector. Given all of these factors Mongolia presents a unique combination of challenges to the exploration and mining industry. 31 Aug NO MEETING ON THIS DAY (MEETING WILL BE HELD PREVIOUS DAY, AUGUST 30th). 11 STATE NEWS! Wyoming Geological Survey Releases New Oil and Gas Map A comprehensive new map on oil and natural gas resources in Wyoming covers a range of information from the geology to key facilities and production. The map released today by the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) covers oil and gas extractive activities across the state, and is part of the agency s professional map series. This map demonstrates our role in mapping energy resources that are used to provide for our state and the nation s energy needs, said Tom Drean, director of the WSGS. Our scientists and GIS specialists produce these maps so everyone from industry leaders to policy makers can see with one source all the critical information they would need on oil and gas resources and production in Wyoming. The map is available to download (free of charge) via the WSGS website at Energy/MS-55.aspx. Printed copies (1:500,000 scale map) as well as a DVD version are available for purchase via the Online Store. Using geographic information systems (GIS) technology, the map was generated to illustrate a compilation of information. It includes the boundaries of producing and abandoned oil and gas fields in Wyoming, producing (or produced) formations, dominate age or reservoir rocks, field designations, pipeline sizes and locations, refinery and gas plant locations and capacities, basin locations, as well as illustrates the extent of oil shale-bearing rocks. Oil and natural gas geologist, Rod De Bruin is author of the map with cartographic assistance from GIS specialist Phyllis Ranz. Over the years the Oil and Gas Map has been in high demand and is used by industry, researchers, policy makers and the general public, De Bruin said. It has been interesting to watch Wyoming s oil and gas production as the map has evolved over the years, he said. Currently, Wyoming is the second leading producer of natural gas and the seventh of oil in the nation. Nearly all of the state s oil and gas is exported via pipeline and also offers a convenient fuel for on-site use. Data for the map came from previously published WSGS materials on oil and natural gas resources in Wyoming. The Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission provided information on the wells, and pipeline data from the Wyoming Pipeline Authority (WPA) was used for some of the updates. The map is available as a 42 x 66 print or DVD. The DVD contains GIS files, map images, and installation software for viewing the map. Updated pipeline information was generalized by the WSGS for the 1:500,000 scale map and is not included on the DVD version. Current electronic pipeline data can be purchased directly by contacting the WPA. WSGS collection of individual oil and gas maps, at a scale of 1:350,000, have also been updated and are available via the Online Store. These include the Powder River Basin (MS-51), Greater Green River Basin and Overthrust Belt of southwestern Wyoming (MS-52), central and northwestern Wyoming basins (mainly Bighorn and Wind River basins) (MS-53), and southeastern Wyoming basins (Denver, Laramie, eastern Hanna) (MS-54). The 2012 Oil and Gas Map of Wyoming (MS-55) can be purchased via the Internet (Online Store), by calling (307) , ex. 224, or visiting the WSGS on the University of Wyoming campus in Laramie. Page 11

12 GOT ANY MUD LOGS? The WGA has finished updating its collection of scanned mud logs, which are available for purchase via our webpage ( We now have mud logs from over 6,000 Wyoming wells, with coverage over the entire state.
