1 January-February 2011 Volume 7, Issue 1 Geophysical Society of Kansas PRESIDENT S MESSAGE In this issue: GSK Scholarship Announcement GSK Membership 3 GSK Council 3 GSK Committees 3 Crew Tracker 4 Professional Directory 6 GSK Advertising 12 2 As we begin 2011, I would like to take a few moments to reflect on our society s accomplishments over the past year. All in all, I believe 2010 was quite a successful year for the GSK. Although we had a limited number of technical programs due to the resignation of our Technical Program Chair early in the year, we were fortunate to have two Distinguished Lecturers speak to our membership in In January, Bruce Hart of Conoco- Phillips presented his AAPG/ SEG Distinguished Lecture, Reservoir-Scale Seismic Stratigraphy: A Call to Integration, and in November, Carl Sondergeld of the University of Oklahoma (hosted jointly by the Kansas Geological Society and the GSK) presented his SEG/ AAPG Distinguished Lecture, Rumblings from the Laboratory: Past, Present, and Future. In addition to these technical programs, we co-sponsored the Kansas Geophysics in the 21st Century symposium in October. The 21 technical talks and the keynote address by SEG Past- President Steve Hill were all well received by the approximately 100 symposium attendees. In the spring, 15 undergraduate and graduate students from three Kansas universities applied for our annual GSK scholarships. We had an outstanding pool of applicants, and it was difficult to choose the winners. With the support of our membership and newsletter advertisers, we were able to award $3000 in scholarships to 7 of these students and also to provide $500 for Wichita State University s Michael L. Crouch Memorial Scholarship, which was established by the GSK in 2008 in memory of GSK Vice President Mike Crouch, who was a Wichita State alumnus. As I said before, quite a successful year Let s plan on making 2011 even better. We are currently putting together our spring technical program schedule, so if there are any particular speakers or topics you would like to see, please contact me at nissen_susan@yahoo.com with your suggestions. In 2011, we will once again be offering our annual scholarships to both undergraduate and graduate students at our Kansas universities who are currently studying geophysics or who plan to use geophysics in their future careers. If you are a student (or if you know of a student who might be interested in a GSK scholarship), please see the announcement on p. 2 for further details. With the arrival of the new year, I would also like to remind everyone that it is time to renew your GSK membership. You should have recently received an or a mailing from our Treasurer, Spencer Musgrove, with your renewal notice. If you did not receive your renewal notice, please contact Spencer at Spencer.Musgrove@fmr.com. I encourage you to renew your membership ASAP, so we may continue to provide the scholarships and technical programs that benefit our geophysical community. Happy New Year! Susan Nissen Web Address
