This also means that there are approximately three weeks for all of you to get your teams together for the 4th Annual Gene R. George Memorial Golf Tournament set for Friday, June 26th. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Gene George Scholarship Fund. Just to make sure everyone is up to date with all the other things going on throughout the summer, the Enhanced Oil Recovery Institute (EORI) is hosting its Wyoming CO2 Conference July 14-16th at the Casper Events Center in Casper, Wyoming. The Natrona County Rockhounds will be hosting their Gem and Mineral Show Saturday-Sunday, July 11 and 12th. As we all continue on to complete our day to day tasks and spend time enjoying local geology, I ask that you remember the WGA and please send us pictures of your adventures. While doing so also remember that we need submittals of any of your old photographs and memorabilia for an upcoming History of the WGA publication. -MIKE BINGLE-DAVIS June 2015 WGA Luncheon Meetings Meetings are held at the Casper Petroleum Club unless noted. A lunch buffet ($13) is served from 11:15 a.m. to noon. Speaker s presentation begins at noon. Reservations: info@wyogeo.org or call and leave a message at WGA office Contact the WGA office to be added to the lunch reminder list. 2 LUNCHEON SPEAKER ABSTRACTS 12 June Phil Nickerson, Bronco Creek Exploration Copper Exploration in Arizona Abstract: Porphyry copper deposits are the world s largest source (~60%) of copper, and a major source of molybdenum gold and silver. The deposits are characterized by relatively low grade mineralization, millions to billions of tons of contained ore, long mine lives, and billions to tens of billions of dollars of contained metal. Porphyry copper deposits are found in many western states, but are most numerous in Arizona where the Laramide aged deposits have been subjected to post-mineral Tertiary extension. The superposition of the extension on ore bodies provides advantages for the study of both porphyry copper deposits and extension when one of the geologic processes is used to constrain the other. For example, predictable patterns in hydrothermal alteration zoning can be used as structural markers, which may better constrain structural reconstructions and, in turn, aid in better discriminating between different styles of extension. In addition, the deep levels of ore-forming systems exposed in the footwalls of normal faults can be examined at the surface to better constrain ore forming processes. This talk will examine the effects of post-mineral normal faults on porphyry copper systems at the district and arc scale. Importantly, a method for palinspasitcally restoring extension will be demonstrated and shown to be an effective tool in the exploration for world class porphyry copper deposits. Biography: Phil Nickerson was born in Big Horn, Wyoming and graduated from Big Horn High School. He then attended the University of Wyoming where he graduated with a B.S. in Geology & Geophysics, and a minor in the Honors Program in In graduate school Phil studied Economic Geology at the University of Arizona earning a M.S. in 2009 and a Ph.D. in Since 2012 Phil has been employed by Bronco Creek Exploration exploring for copper and gold deposits in the western US. He has served as the WGA Treasurer since CONTACT JUNE 2015 PAGE 2
3 LUNCHEON SPEAKER ABSTRACTS 19 June Rick Bonander, Safari Club Week Long Hunt in the Remote Reaches of Mongolia Abstract: Rick is currently the treasurer of the Central Wyoming Chapter of the Safari Club International. The Safari Club International has a membership of over 54,000 with 187 chapters in over 100 countries. Safari Club International and the Safari Club International Foundation annually spend in excess of 400 million dollars on hunting-related activities, international conservation programs, as well as humanitarian aid to individuals and communities in need. Rick will be speaking on one of his recent excursions to Mongolia, outlining the experiences he encountered on his trip. Biography: After graduating with an engineering degree from Montana State University, Rick became involved in the Oil & Gas, Mining, Water Well, and Construction industries; specifically, providing pipe in its many applications to these businesses. Rick established Inter-Mountain Pipe Company in 1982 and is involved in all aspects of the pipe business from engineering design, testing and inspection to threading and transportation of products to our customers. The course illustrates how graphical methods that we once used to quickly determine fluid saturation and moveability (Pickett, Hingle, and Buckles plots) can now be used to determine calculation parameters for the equations, leaving the arithmetic to the hardware while the user concentrates on the interpretation of the data. Exercises provide the means to put the information shared here into practice. Decline Curve Analysis and Economics A Basic Introduction Wednesday, September 23, 2015, 8:30 am 5:00 pm Colorado School of Mines, Ben Parker Student Center, Ballroom C Fee: $250, includes food at breaks, workbook, and PDH certificate. Instructor: Dr. L. Peter Galusky, Jr. P.E. Principal Environmental Eng. Texerra LLC. This one-day course will provide an overview and primer on the use of decline curve forecasting of oil and gas production and economics. The course may be useful to engineering and economic professionals needing a hands-on, practical understanding of decline curve analysis to make them more effective users of petroleum economics software. Following a review of basic mathematics (tailored to class needs), Microsoft Excel will be used to build decline curve models and to do mathematical and economic computations. Expected course outcomes include an understanding of the mathematical concepts of decline curve analysis and the use of these methods in forecasting oil and gas production and economics. This is a beginning-level course for entry-level professionals and those new to decline curve analysis. Students are encouraged (but not required) to bring laptop computers to class.
