The conference kicks off Friday September 8th with a day of technical talks and core viewing at the True River Commons and a Keynote presentation by Kent Sundell at the Black and Gold Grille. Our first regular weekly meeting of the month won t occur until September 15th due to Labor Day and the Field Conference. This months talks should be very interesting with topics on the Platte River revival, downhole nanofluidity solutions to oil field problems, and a structure contour map of the Niobrara Fomation. Phil Nickerson Upcoming WGA Luncheon Meetings and other Events Unless otherwise noted, luncheons are at 11:15 AM and presentations at 12 noon every Friday. 5 Friday, September 15, 2017 Topic: Speaker: Affiliation: Platte River Revival Jolene Martinez, Matt Hahn City of Casper, Fish & Wildlife Service Abstract: Jolene Martinez is a founder and project manager of Platte River Revival, a North Platte River restoration project. She holds an M.A. in Adult and Post Secondary Education and a B.A. in Business Administration and English. With 500 volunteers, Volunteer Day is the largest National Public Lands Day event in the country. People of the community experience the opportunity of performing restoration work. Funds have been raised to restore 1.2 miles of the North Platte River channel, including adjacent banks. Friday, September 22, 2017 Topic: Speakers: A Downhole Nanofluidity Solution to Oil Field Problems Brett Edwards, CEO of Revelant, and Amber Krummel, Professor in the Chemistry Department at Colorado State University Edwards Krummel Abstract: Colorado State University (CSU), in partnership with Revelant, is leading R&D efforts into the nanofluidity frontier of oil under the supervision of Amber Krummel, professor of chemistry and director of the Krummel Research Group. The partnership is studying Revelant's Enercat tool and its effects on downhole paraffin, asphaltene, scale, heavy oil and EOR, and on surface crude oil emulsions and injection water through field studies with WY oil & gas companies. The Enercat tool harnesses physics to optimize the properties of produced fluids at a molecular level. This results in stabilized production, decreased asphaltene, paraffin and scale depositions and viscosity. Operating expenses decrease while revenues increase. The Enercat does the same thing chemicals and hot oil do, that of preventing asphaltene, paraffin and scale from shutting down production, but does it more simply and inexpensively. Brett Edwards is the CEO and President of Revelant. He is an international petroleum geoscientist with 30 years of diverse international experience in technologically advanced petroleum exploration and systematic risk analysis process for companies such as: PEMEX, Shell, Pioneer and Apache. He received his BSc in Mathematics & Geophysics at the University of Sydney, Australia; Honors (Masters) in Geology at the University of Sydney, Australia; and his Executive MBA at Colorado State University, USA. Amber Krummel is a Pr ofessor in the Chemistr y Depar tment at Color ado State Univer sity and Revelant s Chief Technology Officer. She focuses her research on probing chemical structure and dynamics in the condensed phase and has built a research facility at Colorado State University. She has been awarded a National Science Foundation CAREER award and was named as an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow. She received her Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin and was a Harvard Postdoctoral Fellow. WGA CONTACT September
6 Friday, September 29, 2017 Topic: Speaker: Affiliation: Laramide Architecture of the Hartville Uplift, WY Alvis Lisenbee, Professor Emeritus South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, Rapid City, South Dakota Lisenbee Abstract: Geometry of the northeast-trending Laramide Hartville uplift is revealed by structure contours on top of the Niobrara Shale Formation. Along the margins of the uplift and in the adjacent basins, well log data were compiled into a GIS data base. Top elevations for individual wells were plotted at a scale of 1:250,000 scale, and the structure surface contoured. Erosion of layers from the Hartville, Laramie, and Black Hills uplifts exposes the Precambrian basement. Approximate Niobrara contours were defined by adding thicknesses of intervening formations to the contact elevations of formations shown on geologic maps of varying scales. Alvis Lisenbee joined the faculty at the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering at the South Dakota School of MinesFollowing doctoral studies at Pennsylvania State University in He has applied his interest in structural geology to field-related projects with graduate students, or as a consulting geologist to mining and petroleum companies. Areas of study include Laramide development of the Black Hills and Big Horn uplift, the Rio Grande rift of New Mexico, the Basin and Range of eastern Nevada. Other interests include continental collision and wrench faulting in Iran, Turkey, Saudia Arabia, Oman, Libya and Venezuela. 8 Membership Moment Isabella Mae Lemaster From the smoke-filled WGA board room... Luncheon venue. The Black Gold Grille has had inconsistent food quality, and some complaints from members were noted. WGA 2nd VP Becky Good met with Black Gold's management regarding menu issues. They acknowledged and concurred with WGA's concerns, and are addressing the matter. Optional luncheon tip. WGA has a long-standing tradition of not charging admission for the talk alone. It is unique among AAPG-affiliated associations, most of whom charge entry whether or not the meal is taken. Given the costs and lard work required to set up and then clean up the speaking venue, WGA requests talkonly attendees please make a voluntary service tip for the staff. A $5 donation allows attendees FREE ice tea and coffee (if available). WGA and the Black Gold staff thank you for your consideration. John J. Pedry John was born in Midvale, Ohio to Italian immigrants and coal miners Celeste and Aurelia Pedri. Spurred on by Pearl Harbor, John enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He became a bombardier-navigator on the new B-26 medium bomber in the European theatre. Wounded on his third mission, John received the Purple Heart and Silver Star, then went on to complete 37 missions. His marriage to Frances Harkins would last 62 years until her passing in With an MS in geology from Ohio State University, John moved to Casper and worked in the petroleum exploration business for 50 years. He was active in the Wyoming Geological Association, the Casper Petroleum Club, and was a devoted member of Our Lady of Fatima and Saint Anthony Catholic Churches. John passed peacefully at 96 years in the care of Central Wyoming Hospice after a brief illness. Donations can be made to Central Wyoming Hospice. WGA CONTACT September
