GIS based modeling of chemical fate, transport and impacts for policy support

1 GENERAL INFORMATION Chemical risk communication and management increasingly requires mapping of exposure and vulnerability. Maps are often ideal tools both from the perspective of public decision makers, and of companies needing to communicate with authorities and stakeholders. The Summer School aims at introducing to the practical use of GIS for chemical fate and transport modeling, and the set up of spatial decision support systems for environmental policy on chemicals risks. The course is addressed to both researchers (including PhD students) and practitioners in the private and public sector; participants are expected to have a background in Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Environmental engineering or related fields. All lectures and training sessions will be held in English. TOPICS fundamentals of geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial decision support systems (SDSS) linking GIS to chemical fate and transport modeling of POPs, pesticides, industrial emissions, contaminated sites, and diffuse urban emissions assessment of chemical impacts on human health and ecosystems spatial decision support techniques, including multicriteria analysis (MCA) 5 specialized 1 hr seminars by leading experts in the field, illustrating pertinent, real world examples and case studies. The 5 days course is structured in lectures and hands on exercises. During the course, participants will be instructed on fundamental theoretical concepts, worked calculations and GIS implementation of models. They will be also exposed to case studies showing the application of models in environmental assessment to support plan and policy decision making.

2 Course Coordinator: Prof. Alberto Pistocchi, PhD Lecturers: Alberto Pistocchi, PhD, is an expert in GIS based chemical fate and transport modeling, environmental assessment and spatial decision support systems. He has been working as a project manager and land planner for the Regione Emilia Romagna river basins masterplanning ( ), and as a project manager and researcher for the European Commission JRC FATE activities, particularly for the development and application of the MAPPE GIS based model of chemical fate and transport at the European and global scale ( ). Since 2010 he is working as a consultant with GECOsistema srl, of which he is a founding partner and the scientific coordinator, and as an adjunct professor of Environmental Assessment at the University of Trento. He has organized short courses at SETAC Europe and SETAC North America meetings on GIS based chemical fate and transport modeling. He is authoring the book GIS based chemical fate and transport modeling: principles and applications, to be published with John Wiley and sons in and Università di Trento, Italy. Davide Geneletti, PhD, has 15 years of experience in research and training in the fields of spatial decision support systems and environmental assessment and planning. He has conducted research and capacity-building in over 15 different countries across Europe, Latin America and Southern Asia. In he was a Research Fellow at Harvard University s Sustainability Science Program. He is currently a researcher and lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Trento. Ezio Crestaz is an expert in water management, groundwater flow and transport modelling, environmental spatial analysis, geophysics and GIS systems design and development, with 26 years of professional experience at different ENI companies. He has been working in geothermal, mining, hydrogeological, environmental and GIS/IT fields, particularly contributing to design, development and delivery of spatial databases/gis and Spatial Decision Support Systems (SDSSs) solutions for water supply and environmental remediation at regional and local scale. Author of about 35 papers on groundwater modelling and GIScience, he has extensive teaching experience, in the framework of international cooperation projects (UNDP, EU), graduate and post-graduate university courses. He has been an Adjunct professor of Groundwater hydrology at Camerino Un. (Italy) and, since 2010, guest lecturer in GISc at Birkbeck College/UCL, London. He holds a degree Hon. in Geological Sciences (Turin Un., Italy), a MSc Dist. in GIScience (Manchester Metropolitan University, UK) and a MSc Dist. in Computer Science (Hertfordshire Un., UK). 3 Lecturers Stefano Bagli, PhD is an expert in ecological and human health risk assessment. He has been working as a founding partner and the CEO of GECOsistema srl since ist foundation in 2001, with focus on environmental impact assessment and human health risk assessment of chemicals and spatial decision support systems for environmental planning. His past experience include research grants at the EC JRC ( ) and the University of Bologna (2011-ongoing) where he is involved in the development of spatial decision support systems for coastal management. Italy. Paolo Mazzoli is an expert of GIS and environmental modeling and the technical manager of GECosistema srl of which he is a partner. He has been working for 10 years+ as a consultant in hydrology and environmental assessment. He has extensive experience in training courses of GIS at the University of Bologna and other organizations. Italy Invited lecturers from leading European research institutions will deliver specialized seminars throughout the course, related to applications of spatial decision support systems for the environmental assessment of chemicals and other topics of interest.
