1 A Publication of the Wyoming Geological Association Established 1943 Volume XIV, No. 7 J ul y 2018 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Hello membership. I hope everyone s summer is getting started off on the right foot. I don t have much this month just a couple of reminders. The Gene R. George golf tournament here in Casper will be on June 29th, so if you have not registered yet and want to participate please do so soon. Also, the WGA picnic and pioneer awards banquet will be held in August at Alcova Lake. Information regarding the picnic will be sent out soon. Our first WGA meeting at the new venue, Armours Silver Fox Steakhouse, was June 1st. We had 27 members total. I believe this was a success! I hope everyone will enjoy the new venue. I just want to stress the importance of RSVP ing for the meeting. We will now be giving the Armours management a final count of attendance for those who plan on eating strictly off the RSVP list. So please remember and let Brianna know if you are coming or not so she can give the restaurant an accurate number. Thank you. 2 Friday, July 13, 2018 Topic: Wyoming State Geological Survey Interactive Web Maps Speakers: Rachel Toner & Jim Stafford STAFFORD TONER Affiliation: WY State Geological Survey Summary: Online web maps represent a step forward in mapping technology because the user is no longer restricted to a static dataset at a scale and detail dictated by the map author. Users can interact with web maps to create a product specific to their needs by displaying customized combinations of data layers that would overwhelm a traditional paper map. The online data layers themselves can also be easily queried and updated, providing quick access to subsets of the most current information. Web maps are an excellent one-stop place to find related datasets without having to request them from multiple sources. The Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) has developed several such web maps, including the Oil and Gas Map of Wyoming and the Groundwater Atlas of Wyoming. The oil and gas web map emphasizes Wyoming s oil and gas geology and infrastructure. It includes an oil/gas field layer generated by a WSGSdesigned model that standardizes and automates the field polygons and associated attributes. The groundwater atlas web map highlights public groundwater data, including wells, water quality, aquifers, and recharge. The WSGS will also be releasing an interactive mines and minerals map that will display locations of abandoned and active mines, as well as mineral sample locations and analyses. Besides incorporating original WSGS datasets, all WSGS maps also include data layers from multiple outside sources. Bio: James (Jim) Stafford was raised in Chugwater, Wyoming, and earned a B.A. in Environmental Science from the University of Colorado and an M.A. in GIS and Water Resources from the University of Wyoming. He has been with the Wyoming State Geological Survey for 13 years as a resource analyst and GIS analyst, working on a wide variety of geologic topics and specializing in geospatial analysis, data processing, and hydrology. Jim received GIS professional certification in Rachel Toner, a native of Sheridan, Wyoming, received B.S. and M.S. degrees in geology from the University of Wyoming. She has 17 years of experience as a geologist and GIS/database professional. Her expertise includes oil, gas, and coalbed methane resources, GIS, data analysis, and database creation. Toner has been employed since 2013 as an oil and gas geologist for the Wyoming State Geological Survey. WGA Contact July

3 Friday, July 27, 2018 Topic: Speaker: Affiliation: Report on Wyoming Legislation Chuck Gray (R) WY House of Representatives Summary: Chuck Gray is a Republican member of the Wyoming House of Representatives, representing District 57. He was first elected to the chamber in Elections for the office of Wyoming House of Representatives took place in The primary election took place on August 16, 2016, and the general election was held on November 8, The candidate filing deadline was May 27, Incumbent Thomas Lockhart (R) did not seek re-election. Gray defeated Audrey Cotherman in the Wyoming House of Representatives District 57 general election. NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. crude exports surged to a record 1.76 million barrels per day (bpd) in April from 1.67 million bpd in March thanks to the rising discount for U.S. crude versus the global benchmark, foreign trade data from the U.S. Census Bureau showed recently. Most of the increase came from Italy and the Netherlands, which received 248,000 bpd and 104,000 bpd, respectively. The total export figure was the highest on record since at least 1920, according to U.S. government data. U.S. oil exports have surged since a decades-long ban on them was lifted late in 2015 and the export economics over the past two months have become even more favorable as U.S. crude s discount to Brent widened to the most in over three years. U.S. crude s discount to Brent widened to more than $11 a barrel last week, the biggest since March 2015 as shale production has soared to a record. Oil producer Occidental Petroleum Corp expects crude exports to more than triple, adding about 3.6 million bpd over the next five years, a company executive said at an industry conference on Wednesday. China, still one of the top destinations, imported fewer barrels of U.S. crude in April, the data showed. Exports to China were about 248,000 bpd in April compared with about 380,000 bpd in March. Canada received the highest shipments in April, at about 342,000 bpd, while South Korea and Taiwan received 102,000 bpd and 97,000 bpd respectively. The U.S. sent its second cargo to the United Arab Emirates at about 38,000 bpd. U.S. Census s foreign trade oil data is published weeks earlier than closely watched U.S. Energy Information Administration trade figures. The EIA, which bases its numbers on the Census data, will release its monthly crude figures at the end of the month. WGA Contact July

7 GUATEMALA CITY, June 3 (Reuters) - An estimated 25 people, including at least three children, were killed and nearly 300 injured in the most violent eruption of Guatemala's Fuego volcano in more than four decades, officials said. Volcan de Fuego, whose name means "Volcano of Fire", spewed an 8- kilometer (5-mile) stream of red hot lava and belched a thick plume of black smoke and ash that rained onto the capital and other regions. It was the 3,763- meter (12,346-feet) volcano's second eruption this year."it's a river of lava that overflowed its banks and affected the El Rodeo village. Dozens of videos appeared on social media and Guatemalan TV showing the extent of the devastation. One video showed three bodies strewn atop the remnants of the flow as rescuers arrived to attend to an elderly man caked from head to toe in ash and mud. In another video, a visibly exhausted woman, her face blackened from ash, said she had narrowly escaped as lava poured through corn fields. "Not everyone escaped, I think they were buried," Consuelo Hernandez told news outlet Diario de Centroamerica. Steaming lava flowed down the streets of a village as emergency crews entered homes in search of trapped residents, another video on a different media outlet showed. The eruption forced Guatemala City's La Aurora international airport to shut down its only runway due to the presence of volcanic ash and to guarantee passenger and aircraft safety, Guatemala's civil aviation authority said on Twitter. The volcano is some 25 miles (40 km) southwest of the capital, Guatemala City, and is close to the colonial city of Antigua, which is popular with tourists and is known for its coffee plantations. Workers and guests were evacuated from La Reunion golf club near Antigua as a black cloud of ash rose from just beyond the club's limits. The lava river was running on the other side of the volcano. Officials said the volcanic eruption still presented a danger and could cause more mud and pyroclastic flows. "Temperatures in the pyroclastic flow can exceed 700 degrees (Celsius) and volcanic ash can rain down on a 15-km (9-mile) radius. That could cause more mud flows and nearby rivers to burst their banks," said Eddy Sanchez, director of Guatemala's seismological, volcanic and meteorological institute. The huge plumes of smoke that could be seen from various parts of the country and the ash that fell in four of Guatemala's departments caused alarm among residents. WGA Contact July
