Sadly, that can only last so long. Hopefully our hunters will have some favorable weather for the hunting season, which should be open by the time you read this. Our consolidation of office space is nearly complete. We have cut out 600+ square feet of warehouse space, effectively reducing our rent by approximately $200 per month. During this consolidation process, Don Cardinal and Ralph Specht meticulously measured our allocated space and found that our previous lease had too much footage listed. Because of this, $30 of the $200 in savings a month is directly attributable to Don and Ralph s work. The WGA owes them a huge thank you! In addition, the Board has decided to purchase an aluminum sign for the outside of the building. It ll be nice to have a way for people to actually find the office. September has had some great luncheon talks. Julia managed to wrangle two AAPG Distinguished Lecturers and both were available on back-to-back Fridays! Usually we can only get the AAPG DLs to speak during the week which leaves us with reduced attendance, but we had nice, big groups for both! We also had our first joint SPE/WGA meeting in September and it was nice seeing both groups together again. I know both Julia and the SPE have some great talks lined up to finish out the year, so keep checking the newsletter to make sure you don t miss a thing. Speaking of the newsletter, please note that we are going to cut back on the printing and mailing costs of the newsletter by switching to an electronic newsletter. A monthly containing a link to each new newsletter will be sent, so make sure Dixie has your most up to date address (the electronic newsletter is in PDF format). We have been sending these notices lately, so if you aren t receiving them, check with Dixie. Now, we know that not everyone is computer savvy, so we will allow you to opt-in to continue to receive the paper copy. Wellbore Surveying: Accuracy, Uncertainty, and Quality Assurance Joint Meeting with SPE; Ben Hawkinson, Scientific Drilling ABSTRACT: Wellbore surveying is an extremely important tool in maximizing value and minimizing risk when drilling directional wells; however, it remains one of the least understood disciplines among drilling engineers. This presentation will help shed some light on the sometimes complicated and confusing world of wellbore surveying, and will provide engineers with some key concepts that will arm them to make better wellbore survey decisions. Focus will be placed on issues such as survey vendor and technology selection criteria, interpretation of survey results, and use of the ISCWSA error models to model position uncertainty. The presentation will also include an overview of survey quality assurance and its relation to positional uncertainty and instrument performance models. Better understanding of wellbore survey management will empower drilling engineers to make decisions that maximize the value not only for the individual well, but for the entire reservoir. BIOGRAPHY: Ben Hawkinson is the Global Product Line Manager for Survey and MWD products at Scientific Drilling, and is based at Scientific Drilling's Applied Technology Center in Paso Robles, California. He joined Scientific Drilling in 2003 and led an engineering team which worked on Scientific Drilling's Keeper gyro survey products. He spent time in global operations before being named Product Development Manager at the Applied Technology Center, where he led technical developments in the company's MWD, LWD, and Survey products. Ben is a member of the International Steering Committee for Wellbore Survey Accuracy and has a BS degree in Computer Engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. 14 Oct. The WY-CUSP Program: Working to Deliver a Certified Commercial CO2 Storage Site to Wyoming Speaker: Ron Surdam, Carbon Management Institute Director, University of Wyoming School of Energy Resources BIOGRAPHY: Ronald C. Surdam, director of the Carbon Management Institute (CMI) at the University of Wyoming, may very well hold the key to Wyoming s future as one of the leading energy producers in the world. Surdam, who was a pioneer in developing new ways to conserve water resources related to coalbed natural gas production in the Powder River Basin, served as a faculty member of the Department of Geology and Geophysics for 32 years, officially retiring in He received a bachelor s degree in 1961 and a Ph.D. in 1967, both in geology, from the University of California, Los Angeles, and began his UW career in From 2004 to 2010, Surdam was the director of the Wyoming State Geological Survey, during which time he headed a search for potential carbon sequestration sites that eventually designated the Rock Springs Uplift as a perfect place for carbon sequestration. 28 Oct. Casper Mountain Science School Speaker To Be Determined The Casper Mountain Science School (CMSS) provides students the opportunity to learn outdoors, to increase their knowledge of science, to find delight in nature, and to reflect on their place in the world. CMSS is a new opportunity for students to experience science in a unique and fun way the outdoors. CMSS is a science-based, multidisciplinary program where knowledge is interwoven with Wyoming's ecology. Students come to understand the many relationships between themselves and our geology, biology, climate, and history that create our unique landscape. Learning at CMSS is based on objective curricula that encompass inquiry, discovery, and problem solving strategies. It encourages students to ask questions, find answers, arrive at their own conclusions, and be reflective about their own learning. The science school is located near Casper, Wyoming on Casper Mountain at Camp Sacajawea. Sessions are held during the academic school year, September through May. Sessions can run from one to five days long starting in the fall of CMSS is a partnership between Natrona County School District, Casper College, University of Wyoming/ Casper College Center and BOCES. New users will acquire tips and tricks to create projects, maps and cross sections, employ zone manager, perform multi-well log analysis, and more Geothermal Resources Wednesday-Thursday, November 16-17, 2011 Colorado School of Mines; Ben Parker Student Center, Ballroom C Fee: $450, includes food at breaks, class notes, and PDH certificate Instructor: Stuart Simmons, Colorado School of Mines Global geothermal energy development is once again on the rise, and the outlook for growth in the next few decades is buoyant. This two-day course highlights the benefits of geothermal energy, and it provides a broad overview of geothermal resources, with emphasis on geological-hydrological settings, resource assessment, and utilization (power generation to direct use). It focuses on geoscientific aspects that are relevant to discovery and development of a resource. A broad range of topics are covered including worldwide occurrences, classification, heat transfer, fluid chemistry, hydrothermal minerals, controls on fluid flow and storage, exploration techniques, surface expression, resources in volcanic provinces and sedimentary basins, and geothermal resources in USA. The course is designed for scientists and engineers, who have minimal background on geothermal energy, but who have worked in other resource industries such as hydrocarbons, groundwater, and minerals. Kulha, Petrophysical/Petroleum Engineering Consultant This course will provide a proven methodology to identify and evaluate low-resistivity, low-contrast (LRLC) pays as seen in modern wells or as potential bypassed pays in old wells. World-wide examples from productive LRLC reservoirs are presented. The following aspects of LRLC pays will be covered: geologic causes and the depositional and diagenetic environments in which LRLC pays are commonly found identification and evaluation techniques using logs and samples quick-scan log techniques to identify possible productive sands examples of productive LRLC wells and reservoirs from many basins practical application of evaluation techniques on LRLC client workshop wells The first half of the workshop concentrates on general concepts and methodology to evaluate low-resistivity, low-contrast (LRLC) pays. The second half of the course is focused on examples. Participants are encouraged to bring non-proprietary examples that can be discussed in this session.
