1 C NT CT A Publication of the Wyoming Geological Association Volume W, No. 12 DECEMBER 2014 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Happy Holidays everyone! I m honored to announce our WGA Teacher of the Year for 2014/2015: Polly Beebout. She is a Science teacher at CY Middle School in Casper. Please look for more information along with timing of an awards ceremony in the next newsletter. Dixie has sent out membership renewals for next year. If you have not received yours yet, please let her know. Please consider donating to the scholarship funds. These monies will directly be directed towards scholarships for this next year. Beyond next year, they will go towards building the scholarship principal funds. We are currently in the process of setting up a scholarship investment fund using a portion of the current monies. This should let us meet, if not exceed, our current award amounts for the long term. Next year we have a few major events already in the works. Look for the page on the GSA RMS conference in May. This will be a great opportunity to hear current academic research on a wide variety of geologic topics. The end of May will see Denver hosting the AAPG Annual Convention and Exhibition. WGA is co-sponsoring a field trip for this conference. The end of June WGA, along with SME and SPE, will again host the Gene R. George Golf Tournament. There will most likely be a few other events later in the year. Going forward into 2015, the board will continue to focus on website updates, including a easier to access mudlog library, increasing our social media presence to share Wyoming geology with more people, and archiving our WGA history. Our incoming president, Mike, will expand on these topics and also introduce the new board in our next newsletter. The board elections will be held at the last WGA meeting this year, December 12th. I m honored to be part of an organization with such a rich history, with roots dating back to December Finally, thank you to the Board of Directors for their service this past year. Julie Lemaster December 2014 WGA Luncheon Meetings Meetings are held at the Casper Petroleum Club unless noted. A lunch buffet ($12) is served from 11:15 a.m. to noon. Speaker s presentation begins at noon. Reservations: info@wyogeo.org or call and leave a message at WGA office Contact the WGA office to be added to the lunch reminder list. Guests are always welcome! 5 Leslie Waggener Please Give Us One More Boom 12 Karl Osvald Current Exploration of Mars and Comets Jan. 9 Marilyn Wegweiser National Minerals Testing Lab

The focus of the course is placed on the design, construction, stimulation, and production of wells. Specific topics discussed include the drilling of wells, rig types, wellbore integrity and design, completion types, casing and tubing definitions, downhole tools such as packers, formation damage, and stimulation including hydraulic fracturing. As the title implies, the course is designed for those who work in the oil and gas industry but do not have a technical background in subsurface topics. Previous attendees that have found the course useful include landmen, technicians, accountants, financiers, and field personnel. PETRA Intermediate Mapping and Cross-sections Tuesday and Wednesday, December 16 and 17, 8:30 am 5:00 pm Colorado School of Mines, Berthoud Hall room 201 Fee: $500, includes food at breaks, workbook, and PDH certificate. Limit 20 people Instructor: Jewel Wellborn, Hydrocarbon Exploration & Development, Inc. The Intermediate Mapping portion of the class is designed for those participants who have completed the Petra Introductory course and are ready to advance their use of mapping features, gridding, and computational options available in the PETRA Map module. Workflows using contouring algorithms, gird to grid manipulations, computations, residual and curvature processes will be discussed. Map options such as directional well posting, drainage radii, rose diagram and lineament analysis, dip and strike calculation and presentation, 3D visualization, and posting of engineering data may be offered as class participants request. A discussion of overlay options and management may also be reviewed. (This class is designed with professional Geoscientist in mind). The Advanced Cross Section part of the class is designed for those participants who are familiar with the basic uses of the Petra Cross Section Module. Workflows designed for detailed structure and stratigraphic analysis, correlations, fault placement, color fill and log displays will be discussed. Raster log review, maintenance, ad display options will be covered. Exercises using the Raster Correlation tool, Log Correlation Module, Directional Well Module and the Slip Log option will be used. Basic Openhole Log Interpretation Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, January 27-29, 2015, 8:30 am 5 pm, Colorado School of Mines, Ben Parker Student Center Ballroom A Fee: $750, includes food at breaks, class notes, and PDH certificate Instructor: Dr. Dan Krygowski, The Discovery Group, Denver, CO Limit: 60 persons Offers a hands-on approach to basic openhole well log analysis and interpretation; Focuses on the traditional interpretation targets of lithology, porosity, and fluid saturation; Introduces a variety of interpretation techniques in the context of the availability of newer, more extensive, data; Is organized by the targets, or goals of the measurements, rather than by the physics of the measurements.
