2 POSITION TITLE MINISTRY AND DIVISION Energy, Mines and petroleum Resources: Geology Division BRANCH AND SECTION Mineral Resources Branch, Applied Geology Section UNIT OR PROGRAM SUPERVISOR'S POSITION TITLE Senior - Applied Geology CLASSIFICATION GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION Kamloops SUPERVISOR'S CLASSIFICATION PROGRAM FUNCTION (Purpose of the program and of the organization in which the position operates) The principal function of the Applied Geology Section is to facilitate effective, orderly exploration, development and utilization of mineral resources throughout British Columbia by providing governments, the mining and exploration industry, and prospectors with technical information about known metallic and non-metallic mineral deposits and occurrences, as well as potential occurrences, by examining prospecting and exploration programs and mine development, maintaining detailed and accurate mineral deposit files, and making detailed geologic studies of important and significant mineral deposits and mineralized areas, and by representing the ministry's interests and objectives. PURPOSE OF POSITION AND SUMMARY OF ITS FUNCTIONS The main purpose of this position is to facilitate the orderly development of metallic and non-metallic mineral resources in the south central interior of the province. Key duties are: to independently assess the extent and quality of metallic and non-metallic mineral deposits at active mines and mineral exploration properties within the region, and to monitor exploration and development; to provide technical advice and information to mining and exploration companies, prospectors, the public and government agencies; to train prospectors under the Prospectors Assistance Act, and to assess prospectors' programs for assistance grants and to provide technical assistance and advice; to advise ministry official of exploration activity and geological aspects related to the Mineral Act Regulations and Coat Act Regulations; to act as a ministry representative in Canada and other countries; to perform other related duties. ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT The Applied Geology Section is one of four sections of the Geology Division, Mineral Resources Branch. The Senior - Applied Geology and the three remaining section heads report to the chief, Mineral Resources. The Applied Geology Section is staffed by six, each of whom serves a region of the province. A seventh region, covering Vancouver Island and Southern Coastal areas, is served by the Senior. The six s are located in their respective regions and are supervised by the Senior, who sets program objectives within established policy. One or possibly two, junior geologists or technical support staff may be assigned to each for a four-month period each summer, to conduct supplementary studies. s exercise independent judgement in conducting mineral studies according to established objectives. Their work is reviewed for completeness, for adequacy of technical content, and for compliance with objectives.
3 1. 30% POSITION'S SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS AND HOW THEY ARE PERFORMED Independently assess the extent and quality of metallic and non-metallic mineral deposits at active mines and mineral exploration properties within the region and to monitor exploration and development by: conducting geological examinations of exploration projects in order to obtain the factual data required for files and reports; examining all operating mines in the region on a regular basis to keep abreast of geological and mining developments in the industry; mapping mineral deposits, occurrences and significant new discoveries to establish the geological environment and their extent; studying and correlating on a regional basis the nature and distribution of mineral deposits in order to develop a thorough familiarity with the economic geology of the region; interpreting prospecting, mineral development and geological data in order to predict the distribution and occurrence of specific mineral deposit types in the region; preparing reports based on field and laboratory study; maintaining detailed geological records on all mineral deposits and occurrences within the region; directing staff assigned from the headquarters pool to assist mineral deposit studies, guiding and assisting students working on post-graduate study problems; managing an independent district office, sharing available office staff % 3. 20% Provide technical advice and information to mining and exploration companies, prospectors, the public and government agencies on geology, mineral exploration and development in the region by: advising large and small companies and prospectors on actual mineral occurrences and predicted occurrence of specific minerals in particular geologic environments, and setting mineral exploration targets; providing geological and other technical advice and information to explorers, educators and the public in response to individual inquiries, including the identification of rocks, minerals and fossils, and providing access to government publications, maps and mineral deposit assessment reports. Under the Prospectors Assistance Act, and for the approval of the Director of prospectors Assistance, train prospectors, assess prospectors' programs for assistance grants, and provide technical advice and assistance by: designing courses and instructional materials, and conducting Basic Geology and prospecting courses in cooperation with Community Colleges, Chambers of Mines and clubs; conducting field courses in geology and advanced mineral exploration techniques in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and regional colleges; assessing the eligibility of applicants in the region for prospectors Assistance grants; conducting field examinations of mineral occurrences and deposits to assess the geologic situation and the potential economic value, and to provide technical advice and assistance to further property development; submitting reports, analyses and recommendations to the Director of prospectors Assistance.
4 4. 15% POSITION'S SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS AND HOW THEY ARE PERFORMED (CON'T) Provide advice to the Ministry regarding exploration activity and geological aspects related to the Mineral Act and Regulations, Coal Mine Act Regulations in cooperation with other ministry officials and other agencies by: examining and monitoring uranium occurrences and deposits and conducting field studies as required; directing exploration and mining companies to hold and store designated drill core; serving as the ministry's representative or alternate on the Regional Resource Management Committee and the Technical Planning Committee for the Kamloops region, presenting and arguing the ministry's position on Mineral Land-Use Impact issues; submitting reports and analyses and initiating recommendations to senior ministry officials and other agency representatives as to possible legislative amendments beneficial to the public and private sector; explaining the ministry's position to committees, groups or individuals concerned with areas considered to be ecologically sensitive; serving as an expert witness in litigation and special hearings. 5. 5% 6. Acts as a ministry representative in Canada and other countries by: preparing and presenting papers, reports and lectures on behalf of the ministry regarding mineral deposit studies, exploration trends and mine development; attending conventions and technical field trips related to mineral deposit studies, geological innovations and mineral exploration technique developments. Performs other related duties. 5% 1. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Education, Experience and Occupational Certification Master's degree in geology supplemented by at least five years of experience in mining or exploration geology; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Registration as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers of British Columbia. Membership in professional associations such as the GAC or CIM is recommended. 2. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills Extensive knowledge of economic geology; considerable knowledge of plutonic, volcanic and stratigraphic geology; detailed knowledge of the geology of British Columbia. Effective skills in analysis and communications. Extensive travelling and considerable overtime commitments are inherent in the performance of the duties.
