2 NOVEMBER 2012 LUNCHEONL SPEAKER ABSTRACTS 2012 L 2 Nov Title: Polymers as a Means to Increase Oil Recovery EOGA Speaker: Jay Portwood, EOGA Biography: Mr. Portwood received a BS in geology from the University of Texas at Austin in After graduation, he worked for Hadson Petroleum as an exploration and development geologist in the Mid-continent and Permian Basin regions of the U.S. In 1989, he began the start of his career in the EOR industry, and spent the next seven years with Biodynamics Corporation where he specialized in applied surfactant processes. From 1996 to 2007, Mr. Portwood was employed by TIORCO, Inc. where he was responsible for helping to expand the company s domestic polymer EOR business. In 2007, he founded EOGA to provide a full suite of services including candidate screening, project engineering and design, and field implementation of polymer processes used for longterm mobility control flooding, in-depth conformance and profile modification at waterflood and CO2 injection wells, and for water shutoff at producing oil and gas wells. Mr. Portwood has authored numerous technical papers and articles dealing with the practical application of chemical EOR techniques, and has participated as an instructor and presenter at many seminars, workshops and professional meetings. He is a member of SPE, AAPG, and serves on the advisory board of the Tertiary Oil Recovery Project (TORP) at the University of Kansas. Abstract: Polymers are being routinely used throughout the world to improve oil recovery. Mobility control polymer flooding is a long-term process that improves the performance of reservoirs that contain low gravity, high viscosity crude, while gel polymers are being used for in-depth conformance control and profile modification at injection wells in heterogeneous waterflood, CO2 flood, and chemical flood reservoirs. Gel polymer processes are also being used to lower lease operating expense by significantly reducing the production of excessive and unwanted water, which more often than not results in dramatically higher oil producing rate that is associated with lower pressure gradient and improved draw-down effects. The presentation will discuss the various process mechanisms, and what is involved with candidate selection, process engineering and design, risk assessment, and field implementation. A few case histories will be provided to demonstrate how these processes have performed in sandstone and carbonate reservoirs where fluid flow is dominated by natural fractures, and in sandstone reservoirs where flow is dominated by a heterogeneous rock matrix. 9 Nov VETERAN S DAY LUNCHEON with Special Guest Speaker Major D.C. Faber Afghanistan : 2008: A Twelve man Combat Advising Team for the Wardak Afghanistan National Police Please attend our special Veteran s Day Presentation Luncheon (all WGA Veterans will receive a complimentary luncheon). We will host Major D.C. Faber, USA. Major (Ret) D. C. Faber will present a briefing about his 9-month deployment to Afghanistan where he was the Provincial Team Chief to an Afghani 1 Star General in the Province of Wardak, Afghanistan. Major Faber's slide show and briefing will cover the recent history of Wardak Province, the Police leadership he advised (many of whom had fought against the Soviets in the 80's and then each other in that nation's civil war), the terrain and towns of Wardak, and the intriguing culture and people to whom Major Faber's team brought over 30 tons of humanitarian assistance, and conversely, fought against in combat. Major Faber will also briefly describe his current mission; working with and for Veterans around the United States presenting his patent pending Faber Post-Trauma Model. The FPTM successfully explains how and why service men and women are different after war and how they can live even more fulfilling and productive lives post-deployment. 3 NOVEMBER 2012 LUNCHEON SPEAKER ABSTRACTS 16 Nov Title: OVEMBER 2012 L Title: Petroleum Systems Modeling State of the Art and Future Directions Speaker: AAPG Distinguished Lecturer Marek Kacewicz Biography: Marek Kacewicz is research consultant and basin modeler at Chevron Energy Technology Company in Houston, Texas. His primary responsibilities include research and technology applications integrating petroleum systems modeling, seismic inversion, velocity modeling, pressure prediction, geomechanics, and structural modeling. Prior to Chevron, Marek worked as a research geologist at ARCO Exploration and Production Research Center in Plano (Texas, USA), as a basin modeler at Unocal Exploration & Exploitation Technology in Sugar Land in Houston (Texas, USA), Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the Freie Universitaet Berlin (Berlin, Germany), and Research Assistant at the University of Warsaw (Warsaw, Poland). Marek has over 20 years of experience in petroleum systems modeling, exploration, and research. His experience includes both conventional and unconventional resources and covers a wide range of sedimentary basins worldwide. Some of Marek's professional honors include receiving the 1986 International Association for Mathematical Geology Vistelius Research Award, being selected for the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship (Germany); and receiving the 2005 AAPG Gabriel Dengo Memorial award. Kacewicz has an M.S. degree in Numerical Mathematics / Computer Science and a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences, both from the University of Warsaw (Poland). Abstract: Petroleum systems modeling (PSM) is an integration of different geological disciplines to analyze the formation and evolution of sedimentary basins and to study processes such as generation, migration, entrapment and preservation of hydrocarbons. PSM estimates mechanical and chemical compaction of sediments and the resulting porosity/permeability, computes pressure, estimates source rock maturity and the degree of kerogen transformation, models multi-component hydrocarbon generation, expulsion and migration, provides likely locations where hydrocarbons are trapped, and estimates composition and volumes of accumulated hydrocarbons. In addition to its primary function, which is to help reduce exploration risk related to hydrocarbon charge, PSM has become very useful in prediction of pre-drill pressure and effective stress, which are utilized in reservoir and seal quality analysis. Computational complexity of PSM depends on the quality and resolution of seismic and well input data, maturity of the project (exploration, development or production), availability of tectonic/structural/mechanical earth models, and availability of geochemical data. Typical models at present are not too large (several millions grid cells) and the subsurface is represented by relatively simple structured meshes. The utilization of structured meshes often results in inadequately represented internal model boundaries such as faults and may lead to incorrect hydrocarbon migration scenarios. The availability of high resolution seismic and well data allows for building higher resolution and more complex models, spanning from seismic to nano, hence allowing for more accurate representation of complex features and processes. This requires incorporation of unstructured/adaptive meshes and also the utilization of algorithms that couple poromechanics, basin modeling, seismic data and inversion, and utilization of high performance computing platforms, e.g., GPU- or FPGA-based as well as optimized libraries for solving large, illconditioned, sparse matrices. This talk presents the state-of-the-art in PSM and discusses recommended directions required for addressing future needs of exploration for conventional / unconventional resources and interactions with geomechanics and seismic. 23 Nov No Meeting - Thanksgiving! 30 Nov Title: Title: Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, Africa Speaker: Dr. Kent Sundell Dr. Kent Sundell will be discussing his recent trip to Africa, with a focus on the geology of Victoria Falls. This should be a truly interesting presentation. Please plan to attend! CONTACT November 2012 Page 3
