Well, the core workshop on the Turner/Wall Creek was a complete success. We had so many people interested that we had to expand the workshop. Thanks to Gus and Andrew for providing us with an informative and enjoyable workshop. With the successes of last year s Mowry workshop and this year s Turner/Wall Creek workshop, we hope to make the WGA core workshop a continued annual event. Keep your eyes open for more information. Please let the WGA know if there is a specific interval you would like to see covered. As most of you have already heard, the Casper Petroleum Club is closing its doors. We will continue to hold our weekly meetings at the CPC until we hear otherwise. The board is currently exploring other options for meeting venues and has narrowed it down to two places. We will evaluate both locations and should have a decision made soon. We will keep everyone updated, but just remember to continue going to the CPC until you hear from us. If you have comments or suggestions regarding the new venue, please let a board member know. Coming up on October 15 is National Fossil Day!! Head out to the Tate Geological Museum from 10 am to 2 pm to help celebrate this geology holiday with treats, tours, activities, and crafts for all ages. This is a great event for all of you with kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, etc. The first 100 kids through the door will receive a free fossil ID kit to take home. -Marron Bingle-Davis October 2016 WGA Luncheon Meetings Meetings are held at the Ramada Plaza unless noted. A lunch buffet ($13) is served from 11:15 a.m. to noon. Speaker s presentation begins at noon. Reservations: info@wyogeo.org or call and leave a message at WGA office Contact the WGA office to be added to the lunch reminder list. 2 LUNCHEON SPEAKER ABSTRACTS 7 October Tom Drean, Wyoming Geological Survey Iraq Abstract: Iraq has a rich history that dates back to at least 10,000 BC. Over that time the abundance of natural resources has played a very important role in its development. Water has always been a cherished and valuable resource in this region with hydrocarbons playing a key role over the past 100 years. Iraq has some of the largest oil and gas reserves in the world and due to world and local events of the past 50 years these resources remain significantly under explored and developed. Over the coming years Iraq is certain to play a very important role in supplying hydrocarbon resources to the world. Biography: Thomas Drean received a B.S. Degree in Geology from Western Michigan State University and is a graduate of the Executive Development Program from the S.C. Johnson School of Management at Cornell University. Prior to becoming the Wyoming State Geologist and Director of the Wyoming Geological Survey, Thomas worked in the oil and gas industry for 31 years. Twenty six of those years were with ConocoPhillips where he held a variety of technical and managerial positions around the world. CONTACT SEPTEMBER 2016 PAGE 2

3 LUNCHEON SPEAKER ABSTRACTS 14 October Scott Hornafius, ElK Petroleum CO2 for EORI in Wyoming Abstract: The potential oil reserves from CO2 Enhance Oil Recovery (CO2-EOR) projects in Wyoming are estimated to be 1.2 to 1.8 billion barrels, which would require up to 20 TCF of CO2 to recover. Wyoming has large CO2 reserves in the La Barge and Lost Cabin natural gas accumulations that are estimated to be in excess of 10 TCF. Access to these CO2 supplies for additional EOR projects is limited due to the existing contractual commitments for the current sales volumes (345 MMSCFD). Elk Petroleum signed a contract with ExxonMobil in 2011 for a CO2 supply from the Shute Creek gas plant for the Grieve CO2-EOR project, but contracts for CO2 supplies for additional EOR projects have proven to be difficult to secure. An alternative source of CO2 is available from the fermentation emissions from corn ethanol plants in Nebraska and Iowa (>550 MMSCFD) if a pipeline could be constructed from Iowa through Nebraska to Wyoming to deliver this CO2 to Casper. The Wyoming Pipeline Corridor Initiative is in the planning stages for additional CO2 pipelines that could deliver CO2 from near Casper to the Powder River and Big Horn Basins. Since corn ethanol CO2 fermentation emissions are biogenic in origin, there are financial incentives available from the California carbon market that would enable these pipelines to be constructed with funding from the California Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS). These carbon market financial incentives are large enough that the price of the delivered corn ethanol CO2 should be lower than the price currently paid by Wyoming oil producers for natural sources of CO2 produced in Wyoming. Biography: Scott Hornafiusreceived a Ph.D. in the Earth Sciences from the University of California at Santa Barbara and has worked in the oil industry for the last 32 years in Colorado, Wyoming, California, Texas, London, Papua New Guinea and Australia. For the past three years he has served as the President of Elk Petroleum, which is an Australian listed company with assets in Wyoming and Nebraska. While working for Elk Petroleum he developed the concept of Carbon Negative Oil made by a process called bio-co2- EOR, and this work was recently published in the International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control. Elk Petroleum is pursuing the development of CO2-EOR projects in both Wyoming and Nebraska, with the first project being the Grieve EOR Project to the west of Casper, which is being developed in partnership with Denbury Resources. 4 LUNCHEON SPEAKER ABSTRACTS 21 October Gretchen Hurley, BLM Geology and Paleontology of Natural Trap Cave Biography: Gretchen Hurley is a geologist at the Cody BLM field office. Hurley has been employed by the BLM for 14 years and is the CYFO lead for the geology and paleontology programs. She works closely with bentonite and oil and gas operators, paleontology researchers and the State of Wyoming. She conducts frequent public lectures and discussions to share information and to encourage the enjoyment of the geological and paleontological resources found on public lands. From , she served on the Wyoming State Board of Professional Geologists, the state s professional geologist licensing board, protecting professional integrity and public health and safety relative to licensing of geologists practicing before the public. She served as chairman of this board from In 2012 she received the BLM Spirit of Service award. 28 October Shawnna Punteney, Friends of Fossil Fuels Friends of Fossil Fuels Biography: Shawnna Punteney lived in Casper for 16 years. The Punteney family is 5th generation Wyomingite. Shawnna is a Licensed Professional Counselor and has worked with Wyoming residents for 16 years. In the last seven months Shawnna has been working to launch Friends of Fossil Fuels which will serve as a non-profit to educate citizens and fellow professionals about the importance and facts of Fossil Fuel use. 5 MEMBERSHIP MOMENTS Forum for Achievements & Announcements (In the geologic time frame our life is but a moment) The Outstanding Young Professional Award is presented to a person with less than five years of experience who has made significant contributions to the industry through volunteering to AAPG, RMS-AAPG or an RMS-AAPG affiliated society, or by scientific achievement including publication, presentation, or other contributions to geology. This award was first presented in Marron Bingle-Davis is the winner for (Marron is the current WGA President) Annette Hein received the Outstanding Graduate in Communication award from the University of Wyoming this spring. She graduated in May with a bachelor s degree in geology and interned over the summer with the United States Geological Survey in California, working on a project on infiltration. She will be working on her M.S. in hydrology at the Colorado School of Mines, with full funding. (Annette is the current WGA Editor) Long-time member Arnold Woods has written a book titled The Dinosaurs of Wyoming. Over 250 pages long and profusely illustrated, the book covers the dinosaurs whose remains have so far been discovered in the state (over 60). The volume not only discusses the physical characteristics of each dinosaur, but also includes unique stories about many of the state s dinosaur finds. It is currently available at the Tate Geological Museum, at Casper College, and will hopefully be available on-line shortly. Also published this year, Kettles and Crackers - A History of Wyoming Oil Refineries was written by Robert A. King. Wyoming's history would not be complete without considering the refineries that turned the state's oil production into a variety of useful products sold locally and worldwide. The early "tea kettle" refineries used concepts similar to 19th century whale-oil refining and coal-oil plants, however with the onset of the automobile in the early 1900s, demand soon grew for gasoline, and the process of "cracking" was developed to increase gasoline yields. Kettles and Crackers begins with the first oil refinery built in Casper in 1895, continues through the peak years of the 1920s and 1930s when over 50 plants were reported in operation, and concludes with the present state of the industry. The book focuses on when, where, and why over 70 refineries were constructed in Wyoming, and why most of them ceased to operate. Casper College Geology Club and Mike Sheets are jointly hosting a mineral specimens sale at Fossil Day at the Tate Museum on October 15 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Specimens include Arizona copper oxide ores and Missouri galena ores, all reasonably priced. These specimens would greatly enhance home or office decorations.
