Robert Guillet, M.A. Consulting Geologist Limestone Mining Claim SO A new limestone quarry was opened several years ago just south of the traprock quarry on lands owned by IKO Industries Ltd Mining claim SO lies 500m west of the limestone quarry It occupies the southeast quarter of lot 2 in concession l of Madoc Township, County of Hastings. In October 2003 a geological reconnaissance was carried out on Claim SO to get a preliminary feeling as to the suitability of the limestone for eventual quarrying. While limestone is believed to underlie all of the claim, outcrops are generally scarce because much ofthe south and west parts ofthe claim consist of open marsh. Indeed, only a few limestone outcrops are found on the north part ofthe claim where limestone flanks a ridge of traprock which outcrops on the adjoining claim to the north. In June 2000 five holes (holes 132 to!35 inclusive, and hole 137) were drilled on Claim SO to determine the depth to the traprock which is believed to underlie the limestone. A sixth hole (hole l 80) was subsequently drilled for assessment work credit. The locations of these holes are shown on the accompanying plan. They were all drilled by the quarry drill, a Ranger 700 percussion drill that yielded rock chips but not a full rock core. While these holes were logged at the time of drilling, samples ofthe rock chips were not taken. However, these holes were revisited during the present study, and a sample ofthe rock chips was collected for each hole. These samples were submitted to Lakefield Research Ltd. for analysis, with the results shown on the accompanying Certificate of Analysis. The limestone is of Middle Ordovician age, belonging to the Lower Member ofthe Bobcaygeoti Formation. This rock is generally ofhigh-calcium purity, comprising less than 3 0 o silica in the form of sand grains caught up in the limestone at the time of deposition in an ancient sea. It is limestone of this quality that the Company finds suitable for certain applications in the making of asphalt shingles Limestone ofthe Bobcaygeon Formation passes downward into less pure limestone ofthe Gull River Formation, and ultimately into green and red sandy sediments ofthe Shadow Lake Formation, which lie unconformably on the andesite traprock of Precambrian age. The six boreholes were drilled to depths between 40 and 70 feet. Only hole 132 is known to have intersected the traprock that underlies the limestone, and this was at a depth of 54 feet. It was generally found that rock cuttings were not distinctive enough to accurately log the Ordovician strata, so subsequent sampling of these chips was hampered by the uncertainty of P.O. The analyses indicate that holes 133 and 135 are largely within the high-purity Bobcaygeon Formation, as is probably hole 134 also. Chips from the other holes are higher in silica and probably represent contamination with the lower less pure formations. A program ofcore drilling to accurately assess the limestone strata should be carried out before there is any thought of mining this limestone for high-purity uses. This of course will be some years off because of the limestone reserves available on other Company lands. He has con ducted exploration and drilling programs, property valuations and marketing studies on a wide variety of mineral commodities used by the construction, ceramic, chemical and filler industries. His positions with the Ontario Department of Mines and the Ontario Securities Commission have given him an appreciation for the special problems related to resource development and its valuation. Indeed, much of his consulting activity has to do with mineral property valuations, and he is frequently called upon as an expert witness in litigation related to expropriations, and in public hearings for pit and quarry licences. He is the author of numerous technical reports and papers, several dozen of which have been published by the Ontario Government, and he has lectured on ceramic raw materials at McMaster University.
