The (Rough) road to BIM- Geospatial standards Leif Granholm BIM ambassador
What is Structured Semantic data
BIM Graphics to objects Drawings geometry are graphics (appearance important) A Model consists of objects that may contain geometry and/or attributes (structure important)
Structured data Functional objects Physical objects Logical objects Abstract objects Objects describing process Schedules Resources Costs Quality assurance Tasks Work Approvals RFI:s Submittals
Semantic data on the Web Google Knowledge Graph W3C Linking open-data community project Web of Data (open, standard, structured decentralized) Facebook Open Graph
Semantic Web According to the W3C: "The Semantic Web provides a common framework that allows data to be shared and reused across application, enterprise, and community boundaries Humans are capable of using the Web to carry out tasks such as reserving a library book, and searching for the lowest price for a DVD. However, machines cannot accomplish these tasks without human direction, because web pages are designed to be read by people, not machines. The semantic web is a vision of information that can be readily interpreted by machines, so machines can perform more of the tedious work involved in finding, combining, and acting upon information on the web.
Why structured data Technology development enables automatic use of data Robots (good example ping pong playing robot) Augmented reality taken to next step by Google Tango project Drones used for many purposes
Augmented reality & wearable computers Kopin Goldeni Google Glasses use an automatic connection to the cloud to provide access to enormous amounts of information, data and applications
Structured data, game changer Enables automatic consumption of received data by software Design progression level of development Analytics Logistics Remote control and operation Facility and asset management Digital services, navigation, product libraries Only imagination limits the use of data
Open DATA definition open DATA means that data is not tied to any specific tool, software or vendor Freedom to choose the tools best suited for the purpose Freedom to transfer data between tools Freedom to develop very purpose specific tools Independent of any platform Open standard data formats (IFC, CityGML, IndoorGML, InfraGML, KML ) are used for communication and interoperability
buildingsmart position on BIM BIM is about sharing data Open Structured Semantic Standard

OGC at a Glance Not-for-profit, international voluntary consensus standards organization; leading development of geospatial standards Founded in members and growing 38 standards Hundreds of product implementations Broad user community implementation worldwide Alliances and collaborative activities with ISO and many other SDO s Middle East 7 South America 2 North America 163 Africa; 4 Asia Pacific; 59 Europe 203 Copyright 2013 Open Geospatial Consortium 15
What is an OGC standard? A document, established by consensus and approved by the OGC Membership, that provides rules and guidelines, aimed at the achievement of the optimum degree of order (interoperability) in a given context. OGC Technical Committee Policies and Procedures. Derived from ISO definition EuroControl Aeronautical SkyView2 application Copyright 2013 Open Geospatial Consortium
What most people think about standards work!
Or How Many Others View Standards Copyright 2013 Open Geospatial Consortium
Standards Development is not easy! Requires collaboration on a global basis Requires concensus by many organizations Requires give and take Requires certified, repeatable process Copyright 2013 Open Geospatial Consortium
Most important OGC standards (of about 30) Content Conceptual models (f.ex Geometry ISO 19107) GML (Geography Markup Language) CityGML Services WFS (Web Feature Service) CWS (Catalog Service for the WEB) WMS (Web Map Service)
What is GML? Scope The Geography Markup Language is a modeling language for geographic information an encoding for geographic information designed for the web and web-based services
GML enables a vendor-neutral exchange of spatial data GML GIS X GIS Y Oracle File...
What is GML? Characteristics GML is based on XML technologies (W3C) XML, XML Namespaces, XML Schema, Xlinks implements concepts of the ISO series supports spatial and non-spatial properties of objects is open and vendor-neutral is extensible supports the definition of profiles (proper subsets) of the full GML capabilities
CityGML 3D and CityGML Copyright 2012 Open Geospatial
CityGML Application independent Geospatial Information Model for virtual 3D city and landscape models comprises different thematic areas(buildings, vegetation, water, terrain, traffic etc.) data model (UML) according to ISO 191xxstandard family exchange format results from rule-based mapping of the UML diagrams to a GML3 application schema ongoing standardization process in OGC CityGML represents 3D geometry, 3D topology, semantics and appearance In 5 discrete scales (Levels of Detail, LOD)
CityGML : 5 levels of details LOD 0 Regional, landscape model 2.5D Digital terrain model, 3D landmarks LOD 1 City / Site model Prismatic buildings without roof structures LOD 2 City / Site model Simple buildings with detailed roof structures LOD 3 City / Site model Detailed architectural models, landmarks LOD 4 Interior Model Walkable architectural models The same object may be represented in different LODs simultaneously
