4 1 Introduction The mission of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning (M-NCPPC) is to manage the growth and planning of communities while protecting natural, cultural and historic resources. In coordination with the M-NCPPC, the mission of the Prince George s County Planning Department is to promote economic vitality, environmental sustainability, design excellence, and quality development in Prince George s County. A major component of this involves facilitating intergovernmental and citizen involvement through education and technical assistance in the planning process. PGAtlas.com is a web application which supports the goals of the M-NCPPC by providing both education and technical assistance. The application was developed by the M-NCPPC as a public resource that is free of charge and provides citizens access to geographic map layers and aerial imagery of Prince George s County. Additionally, users can: navigate and print maps, measure distances, query the data, zoom to selected records and print mailing labels. PGAtlas.com serves as a tool that delivers the latest county planning information to the citizens of Prince George s County. The purpose of this document is to list and describe the architecture of the Map Services that support PGAtlas.com. 2 Services Overview There are multiple mapping related services that provide geospatial data and functionality for PGAtlas.com. The services are organized into the following four (4) main categories: Map Services Imagery Services Geometry Services Geocoding Services All of the geospatial services supporting PGAtlas.com are provided utilizing Esri s ArcGIS Server suite of software as follows: Esri ArcGIS Server Map Service, Geometry Services and Geocoding Services Esri ArcGIS Image Server Extension Imagery Services The following sections of this document describe the details for each of the four types of geospatial services. 4 P a g e
5 3 Map Services There are thirteen (13) Map Services with a combined total of over one hundred feature classes supporting PGAtlas.com. The table below lists the Map Services and the PGAtlas.com Module in which they are utilized. The sections immediately following this table provide specific details about each feature class included in the PGAtlas.com Map Services. 25 4 Other Geospatial Services In addition to Map Services, PGAtlas.com utilizes other geospatial services to provide additional geospatial data and functionality. The sections below describe the details for these additional services. 4.1 Geometry Service PGAtlas.com utilizes a Geometry Service included in Esri s ArcGIS Server Utilities package. The geometry service performs geometric calculations such as buffering, simplifying, calculating areas and lengths, and projecting. 4.2 Geocode Service PGAtlas.com utilizes a geocode service to provide the ability to locate features by address and zoom to selected addresses on the map. The PGAtlas.com Composite Address Locator is created based on the Street_Centerline_Ln, Property_Flattened_Py, and Address_Pt feature classes which is published as a geocode service 4.3 Imagery PGAtlas.com provides the ability to view geo-referenced aerial imagery. Each image is broken down into a mosaic dataset which is published to the site through a single Map Service. Utilizing mosaics greatly increases the map generation time within the site, providing better performance for users. 25 P a g e
