4 Review John Graham, President, Intergraph SG&I addressing the gathering Intergraph s world tour stops by at Hyderabad User community from public/private sectors and academia came together at the user conference to share success stories, knowledge and witness the Intergraph 2013 portfolio Starting in Hyderabad, the Intergraph Geospatial 2013 World Tour marked the first user conference of the company organised at Hyderabad International Convention Centre on January 21, At the event Intergraph resounded its vision to develop user-centric solutions that are largely based on consumer feedback. This conference is about you (the users), said Kaushik Chakraborty, Country Manager, Intergraph SG&I India, as he welcomed the gathering at the inaugural session. The event offered a perfect platform for the user community to share experiences and success stories in meeting business needs and managing resources. Kaushik encouraged the attendees to use the knowledge gained during the event in nation building. John Graham, President, Intergraph SG&I, emphasized on Intergraph s initiatives to develop solutions that help users perform better across sectors such as national security, disaster management, infrastructure development and utilities. Intergraph has been operating in India for the past 25 years and its research and development operations here are among the best across the globe. In an attempt to capture the huge business potential in the Indian market, the company has been continuously endeavoring to develop solutions targeted at the user requirements. The concept of United Hexagon has been introduced in India according to which all the companies under the Hexagon umbrella will work as a single team to better serve customers and develop better solutions in the years to come. In his plenary address, S Subba Rao, Surveyor General of India, detailed on the current projects of Survey of India and those in the pipeline that will influence India s future. Taking a tour through the history of Survey of India, Subba Rao said the premium mapping agency was established about 245 years ago. In the post independence period the agency played a critical role in shaping India by making maps. It will continue to develop geospatial data for future development of the country. He emphasized on the role geospatial technology is playing in enabling good governance, better project implementation and in developing smart decision support systems. Subba Rao discussed the development of National GIS and the role it will play in moving from E-governance to G-governance. National GIS will promote transparency and will change how data will be generated, managed and shared, ultimately benefitting citizens. Pointing at the technological innovation in the geospatial domain he said, establishment of one control point in the olden days used to take weeks, but using GPS technology this is now done in 2-3 days. Better data storing systems have now been developed and satellite imagery is being used to map India at 1:10,000 scale. 5 implementation of new national map policy, establishment of national ground control points (around 300 established so far), mapping the entire coastline in 1:10,000 scale, mapping 28 major coal fields in India under CMPDI, mapping of 152 towns under NUIS, 3D GIS mapping of Delhi under DSSDI. Dr VK Dadhwal, Director, NRSC, discussed the recent initiatives of NRSC. Looking back at the history of NRSC he said, NRSA was formed in 1974 and later became NRSC. The first antenna ground station for data collection was established in The organisation uses satellite imagery to develop data products. During emergency situations NRSC provides latest data in just one hour, not only for India, but at the global level. NRSC is moving beyond just providing data to providing features such as change detection, crop forecasting, identifying fishing zones, changes in land use pattern, carbon management and protection of sunderbans. The organisation has moved from developing ortho to thematic maps, and is gearing up from providing disaser management services to providing disaster warning and preparedness services. Dr Shiva Kumar, CEO, NSDI, talked about his association with Intergraph. The company has been associated with Survey of India for the past 25 years, and has played a major role in replacing the traditional laborious ways of digitising data with better and enhanced techniques. Intergraph had developed a geoportal prototype in the year 2000, when the formation of NSDI was still in the discussion process. At present, topomaps of India at 1:50,000 scale are available through the NSDI geoportal. Reflecting on the user requirements today, Shiva Kumar said users want solutions and not hardware or software, and that is why the government is spending `3000 crore under the National GIS project for developing user friendly applications. Capacity building is a major need of the hour for better application development, and for this a national taskforce for geospatial technology under the leadership of Dr Kasturirangan, member, Planning Commission has been set up. Indian economy is extremely dynamic, has huge growth potential, and Intergraph solutions can play a crucial role in supporting it, said John Graham. Intergraph team is growing aggressively in India with around 800 employees. The company will continue to invest in Indian operations for better product development, using inputs from customer feedback. Mladen Stojic, Vice President Geospatial Products, Intergraph SG&I, unveiled the Intergraph geospatial 2013 portfolio describing it as more united, modern and dynamic. Sharing the vision of Intergraph he said, the company aims to leverage the decades of experience and knowledge to influence the millions of geospatial users around the globe by providing high-end solutions that deliver value in information. Intergraph solutions help create a digital world by streamlining the lifecycle of geospatial information from capturing, analysing data to sharing it thorugh mobile devices. He emphasised on the need to catch up with new mediums such as the cloud and to understand the world in 2D, 3D and 5D.
