9 SDI and MSDI Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) emphasizes unlcking all f the gespatial data s it can be better utilized by all interested parties. The cncept encmpasses the hardware, sftware and system cmpnents required t supprt the integrated management and interperability f spatial data, including the prcesses, standards, plicies and structural relatinships f all thse invlved. Marine Spatial Data Infrastructure (MSDI) embraces marine gegraphic data. This is all-inclusive and includes data utside f that cllected t supprt navigatin, fr example ceangraphic data and marine cadastre data.

10 Apprach t MSDI A suggested apprach t structuring hydrgraphic and ther types f data fr MSDI deplyment cnsists f three cre elements; use f internatinally recgnized and adpted standards, the establishment f a technical infrastructure t allw the discvery, viewing, and ptentially, the dwnlad f the infrmatin, and the capturing f cmprehensive metadata t describe the cntent, value and limitatin f the data which is essential fr effective discvery f infrmatin f interest.

16 Web App (Data Visualizatin) Smething fast and simple t shwcase the data, but at the same time in line with Canadian Gvernment SDI architecture The ArcGIS Online service was selected as it met the requirements abve and shwed sme f the ptential f a deplyed system. 19 Capturing Cnsistent Metadata Althugh sme metadata sftware tls exist t assist with cllectin. - they are ften built int larger GIS tls r varius ge-prtals - dn t supprt prper validatin ther than checking fr structural cmpliance with the ISO schema. T vercme issues f capturing cnsistent metadata, a XML metadata template was develped that was cmpliant with ISO and XML authring tls were used t capture the required data discvery metadata. This prcess was still a challenge as sme basic infrmatin was frequently nt available and manual XML authring can be time cnsuming and errr prne. Apprach This situatin nt nly highlights the need fr access t quality metadataauthring tls with integrated, rules based validatin, but als the need t have metadata infrmatin present when datasets are exchanged fr any reasn.

20 Data Frmats and Cntent The diversity f data frequently used in the marine dmain makes it difficult t handle many distinct gespatial dataset types using ne cmmn platfrm (in cases where feature viewing/query & and the data catalgue are available directly). Sme data surces are mre prduct-like in nature, resulting in sme datasets having the same features duplicated, creating the need fr decnflictin and harmnizatin f sme data types Apprach Fr this prject, all data was cnverted t SHP t enable feature level display f data within the ArcGIS Online test platfrm, which wrked but did result in visualizatin issues (e.g. prtrayal and clutter).

21 Data Visualizatin Challenges The vast quantity f data, and different types f data, that can be made available in an MSDI leads t the ptential f screen clutter and data visualizatin issues, all f which negatively affect data discvery and ease f use f the system. Apprach Optins (1) Prvide rbust filtering tls s the user can search/display nly the relevant types f data that will ptentially be f interest. (2) D nt have feature level data within the catalgue viewer itself, and just display the gegraphical extents and ther metadata fr the types f data that the user is searching fr, with links t the data surce. (3) Keeping the MSDI visualizatin as simple as pssible while ensuring that the data discvery aspect itself is very rbust (via strng metadata catalging), gives the user the ability t quickly search fr and dwnlad the data f interest.
