4 DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO NORTH KIVU PROVINCE T h e H I V Pro g r a m b a sed at HEAL A f r ica H o s p ital u s es a f a m ily m o d el o f h ealthcare led by indigenous n u r ses a n d p hysicians. The p ro ject c o n sists o f 1 8 r u r a l a n d urban p r enatal clinics ser ving 1 3,769 women a n d a p ediatric c linic w h ich p rovides c o m p r ehensive h ealthcare for H I V a f fected c h ildren. I n a breakthro u g h p ro ject, staf f a n d c o m m u n ity workers were equipped to p rovide n u t r itional supplements a n d m edical c a r e to stabilize severely m a lnourished c h ildren. T h is was m a d e p o ssible by b ecoming a UNICEF n u t r itional d istribution c enter. Juliet is graduating from high school and plans on becoming a journalist. She understands that she has HIV, how it is transmitted and the importance of taking her medications. She is not only surviving with HIV, she is able to pursue her goals. Juliet now has a hopeful future T h is year, a teen suppor t pro g r a m was established to c o u n sel yo u t h a f ter learning t h eir H I V status and improve a d h erence to their m edication. T h e p a t ient r ecord a n d d a t a m a n a g ement system was refined improving a c c ess to patient information to g u ide m edical t r eatment. T h is year staf f b egan u sing simple c ell p h o n es linked to a c entralized m a n a g ement system to update t h eir sto c k of p h a r m a c eutic al supplies ensuring c o n t inual supply o f c r itical m edications. 5 DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO SOUTH KIVU PROVINCE Our fir st year s p ro g r a m focus w ith S o u t h Kivu par t n ers C a t h o lic Diocesan Of fice for M edical Wo r k (BDOM), Pentecostal C h u r c h es in Africa ( C E L PA ), a n d S to p A I DS (HALT SIDA ) h a s been o n HIV testing a s the fir st step in diagnosing t h o se w h o n eed t r eatment a n d reducing t h e risk o f spreading H I V. Fo r t h o se testing n egative, testing b egins t h e educational p ro c ess of r educing t h e r isk of infection. Our three implementing p a r t n ers made impressive strides w ith testing, h ealthcare worker t r a ining a n d c o m m u n ity education. HIV Counseling & Testing 55,156 pregnant women Q: How did you feel when you received your test results? A: I was happy, but with a little doubt because I was not sure to be negative comparing to the high risk I have experienced in the past. I went back a second time to get tested again to be reassured. Q: How is this program useful to you? A: I learned about HIV, how to protect myself and others. It is a good program, especially because it does not discriminate against some categories of youth in the community. Victoria Age 19 and HIV Negative 3,383 urban youth Sexuality Training 17,928 urban youth Prenatal Clinic Patients I was informed about my HIV status during my prenatal consultations and was educated in detail concerning what I have to do in order to prevent my baby from HIV transmission. H is ef forts f a c ilit a ted o p p o r t u n ities for L iberian n a t ionals to take c h a r g e o f t h e c u r r iculum, c o n d u c t t r a ining sessions a n d p a r t icipate in c o m p u ter - based learning. T h is t a r g eted workshop for 79 L iberians, r epresenting over 2 0 d if ferent o r g a n izations u t ilized d igital t r a ining m o d u les to teach c linical staging to healthcare workers. These m o d u les were pro d u c ed by o u r p a r t n er, T h e C enter for H I V I n formatio n ( C H I ), a t the University o f C a lifornia S a n Fr a n c isco. T h e workshops u sed the train - the-trainer m o d el a n d p rovided h a n d s - o n learning o p p o r t u n ities. T h is a c h ievement is a sustainable investment in t h e region led by indigenous leadership. B y leveraging ex isting infrastructure a n d social t ies, we enabled H I V t r eatment a n d p r evention w ith c o n t inuity a n d fostered c o st - ef fective a n d long - lasting c h a n g e.
