3 GlacAPI Project Objectives Improved numbers on mass balance and sea level contribution of glaciers Supply data to analyse dynamic processes causing the acceleration of outlet glaciers after ice shelf disintegration. Detection of possible pre-cursors of ice shelf disintegration Area and period of interest: API region from Prince Gustav Channel to Jason Peninsula, starting Data base: complete time series of archived satellite data (ERS, ASAR, ICESat Terra-SAR-X, TanDEM-X, Landsat, ) and new data (CryoSat, Terra-SAR-X, TanDEM-X), supported by available airborne and in situ data. Technical developments focus at methods for synergistic use of the different satellite sensors for retrieving ice surface topography and motion. GlacAPI Multi-Sensor Analysis of Glacier Response to Climate Change on the Antarctic Peninsula ESA Contract /12/NL/CBi Science Partners:

4 Method for Retrieval of Net Mass Balance The net mass balance B N of calving glaciers is computed as difference between net accumulation, B A, on grounded ice minus the export through a cross section at the grounding line or calving front, B C : B N = B A B C Procedures applied: B ) c u( y) H( y Y dy Map calving velocity with SAR data (InSAR, cross-correlation) Estimate cross section of calving gate for floating fronts through frontal height measured by using altimeter data and TanDEM-X Estimate cross section of calving gate (non-floating) through balance flux 1995 (ERS Tandem ice motion) Estimate Surface Net Balance (Net accumulation B A ) from published data.
