COMINCO LTD. L+ EXPLORATION WESTERN DISTRICT NTS: 82-M/4 L GEOPHYSICAL REPORT: UTEM ELECTROMAGNETIC AND MAGNETOMETER SURVEYS ON THE J AND BECA CLAIMS INTRODUCTION The Bay and Beca claims are located at Adams Lake, about 60 km northeast of Kamloops, B.C. as indicated in the Location Map, Plate The properties are underlain by a sequence of volcanic and sedimentary rocks belonging to the Lower Paleozoic Eagle Bay Formation. In particular, the Bay property is located 2.5 km along strike (southeast) from the Homestake acid volcanogenic Ag, Zn, Pb, Cu, Au barite deposit. The objective of the UTEM electromagnetometer and magnetometer surveys reported herein was to explore for conductive massive sulphide deposits. L FIELD WORK Three grids were surveyed. 7.1 km of UTEM and magnetometer surveying on the Bay grid were completed between May 23 and May 27, km of UTEM surveying were completed on the Beca North grid between May 27 and May 29, Finally, 11 km of UTEM and magnetometer surveying were completed on the Beca South grid between May 30 and June 5, Total surveying is 24.6 km of UTEM and 18.1 of magnetometer. The terrain on the Bay and Beca South grids was very steep, up to 45'. Nevertheless, the line cutting and chainage job was excellent and this speeded up the geophysical survey considerably. The grid was slope corrected. The UTEM survey on the Bay grid was slowed somewhat by electromagnetic noise emanating from the power line crossing the transmitter loop in the valley. - The The field work was completed by Cominco personnel: Jules Lajoie, Jovan Silic and Ingo Jacki sch. Westmi n Resources project geologist, A1 f Randal 1 and his assistant helped to speed up the survey by taking care of the loop laying and retrieving in the most difficult areas.. I magnetic data were acquired with a Scintrex MP-2 proton precession magnetometer. These data were drift corrected in the normal manner by tying in to a basel i ne.
DESCRIPTION OF THE UTEM SYSTEM UTEM is an acronym for "University of Toronto ElectroMagnetometerl'. The system was developed by Dr. Y. Lamontagne (1975) while he was a graduate student of that University. The field procedure consists of first laying out a large loop of single strand insulated wire and energizing it with current from a transmitter which is powered by a 1.7 kw motor generator. Survey lines are generally oriented perpendicular to one side of the loop and surveying can be performed both inside and outside the loop. The field procedure is similar to Turam, a better known electromagnetic surveying method. The transmitter. loop is energized with a precise triangular current waveform at a carefully controlled frequency ( 30.9 Hz for this survey). The receiver system includes a sensor coi 1 and backpack portable receiver module which has a digital recording facility on cassette magnetic tape. The time synchronization between transmitter and receiver is achieved through quartz crystal clocks in both units which must be accurate to abaut one second in 50 years. The receiver sensor coil measures the vertical magnetic component of the electromagnetic field and responds to its time derivative. Since the transmitter current waveform is triangular, the receiver coi 1 wi 11 sense a perfect square wave in the absence of geologic conductors. Deviations from a perfect square wave are caused by electrical conductors which may. be geologic or cultural in origin. The receiver stacks any pre-set number of cycles in order to increase the signal to noise ratio. The UTEM receiver gathers and records 9 channels of data at each station. The later number channels (7-8-9) correspond to short time or high frequency while the lower number channels (1-2-3) correspond to long time or low frequency. Therefore, poor or weak conductors wi 11 respond on channels 9, 8, 7 and 6. Progressively better conductors will give responses on progressively lower number channels as well. For example, massive, highly conducting sulphides or graphite will produce a response on all nine channels. It was mentioned above that the UTEM receiver records data digitally on a cassette. This tape is played back into a computer at the base camp. The computer processes the data and controls the plotting on an 11" x 15" graphics plotter. Data are portrayed on data sections (D.S.) as profiles of each of the nine channels, one section for each survey line. i
DATA PRESENTATION "*c- The results of the survey are presented in one location map, two magnetic maps, three UTEM compilation maps, and 31 data sections. The maps are listed as follows:- Plate Location Map (in text) Scale 1:250,000 Plate Magnetometer Data - Bay Grid (i n envelope) Scale 1: 5,000 Plate UTEM Compilation - Bay Grid (in envelope) Scale 1:5,000 -&.I--- (in envelope) Scale 1:5, _-2 (in envelope) Scale 1: 5,000 -* - R " L (in envelope) Scale 1: 5,000 A legend for UTEM compilation maps and data sections is attached. The 31 data sections in the text are arranged in order of loop number (1 to 3), then in order of line number. An Appendix to this report contains the scheme used for normalizing the UTEM data. INTERPRETATION A. BAYGRID 1. Magnetometer Data + The drift corrected total field magnetometer data acquired on the Bay grid are plotted in profile form in Plate The most prominent feature is at 65N on Line 2400W, which is consistent with a shallow, narrow dyke-like source dipping to the north. However, there is no evidence of the anomaly on Line 2300W and, Line 2500W ends at 50N. A base level shift of about 70 gammas occurs at about 150s on Lines 2200W and 2300W, which may reflect a contact between two 1 different rock types UTEM Electromagnetic Data UTEM data sections (D.S.) 1 to 10 show the vertical component UTEM data acquired on the Bay grid. The loop front is at 500s for all lines. Crossover anomalies are indicated by "X" at the bottom of each section at the interpreted subcrop location of the conductor. The superscript to the "Xu indicates the latest
L.. anomalous channel. Lines 2500W and 2600W were extended at the end of the survey, this data being shown in D.S. 4a and 5a, respectively. The results are compiled onto a grid-claim map on Plate Conductor A 'c- extends from Lines 2200W to 2900W. Its depth is shallow, most likely subcropping, dip is to the north, and conductance (conducti vi ty-thickness product) is about 25 mhos. Conductor B is a poorer zone to the south of Conductor A, also shallow, but with a conductance of about 5 mhos. B. BECA NORTH GRID 1. UTEM Data D.S. 10 to 16 show the UTEM data acquired on this grid. The results are compiled onto the grid-claim map in Plate A number of early time crossovers are observed. These are caused by small, shallow, low conductance sources. Magnetic data were not acquired on this grid. C. BECA SOUTH GRID L 1. Magnetometer Data Plate shows the drift corrected total field magnetic data acquired on the Beca South grid. The eastern half of the grid is relatively quieter than the western half. In the western part of the grid, strong magnetic activity is observed on Line 1900S, west of Station 150W. A strong anomaly occurs at 175W on Line 1600s; it was rechecked in the field and confirmed. 2. UTEM Electromagnetic Data UTEM D.S. 17 to 31 show the vertical component UTEM data acquired on the Beca South grid. The results are compiled onto the grid-claim map in Plate Conductor A crosses all of the lines of the survey grid. The conductance is very poor, less than 1 mho, but it improves somewhat on Lines 1800s and 1900s where the response is observed to Channel 6. Dip is to the east. Conductor B is a better conductor since it is detectable to a later time channel but it is too close to the loop front for proper analysis.
CONCLUSIONS 7.1 km of UTEM electromagnetic and magnetic surveying were completed on the Bay grid. 6.5 km of UTEM surveying were completed on the Beca North grid. 11 km of UTEM and magnetometer surveying were completed on the Beca South grid. Two conductive zones were located on the Bay grid, one being a moderate conductor. No significant conductors were found on the Beca North grid. On the Beca South grid, two poor to moderate conductors were identified. RepotCt by: Research Geophysi ci st Cominco Ltd. DISTRIBUTION: Mining Recorder (4) Westmi n Resources (1) COMINCO W.D. 13 A P P E N D I X '(cr UTEM NORMALIZATION *cr The magnetic field amplitudes from both the transmitter loop (primary field) and from the electric currents induced in the ground (secondary field) vary by a few orders of magnitude from the beginning of a line near the transmitter loop to the end of the survey line far from the transmitter loop. To present such data, a normalizing scheme is used. The primary field from the loop is used for normalizing and presenting the data according to the following schemes :- Continuously normalized plots. a ) For Channel 1: % Ch.1 anomaly = Ch.1 - P P x 100% where P is the primary field from the loop at the station and Ch.1 is the observed amplitude for Channel 1. b ) for the remaining Channels (n = 2 to 9) % 0h.n anomaly = (~h.n - Ch. 1) Ch.1 where Ch.n is the observed amplitude of Channel n (n = 2 to 9) This normalization procedure results in chaining errors displayed in Channel 1 only.
