1 Summary of January 6th-7th, 2017 Snowstorm Weather.gov > Blacksburg, VA > Summary of January 6th-7th, 2017 Snowstorm January 6th-7th, 2017 Snowstorm Synopsis and Highlights Split flow with strong southern stream short wave advanced east from the southern Plains. A 12 hour period of lift ahead of the advancing short wave produced large swath of wintry precipitation from the southern Appalachians to the Mid-Atlantic Coast. Image 2 shows radar loop via (Multi-Radar/Multi-Sensor). Atmospheric conditions across our area supported all snow. Surface low pressure developed over northern Florida and moved northeast to along the North Carolina coast. Moderate to heavy snow with accumulations of 6 to 10 inches, occurred mainly east of the Blue Ridge with the higher amounts from the NC foothills, to south side Virginia. Portions of eastern Virginia into North Carolina saw heavier amounts as well. Satellite imagery shows the snow cover over Virginia and North Carolina. Image 1.
