3 Applied Mechanics (040-31) Syllabus changes in the Applied Mechanics (040-31) at the Mangement Level (III/2) from Jan 2017 as compared with previous Chief Engineer Level Applied Mechanics (041-31): The following titles are moved/removed from the old syllabus: 1- Vector representation (removed) 8- Hydrostatics (moved to naval architecture) 9- Hydrodynamics (moved to applied heat) 10- Mathematical solutions of control system problems (removed) Section B- Statics- Expanded to include 2 nd Engineer syllabus of this unit Section C- Friction: A little of 2 nd Engineer syllabus included Section D- Kinematics: Double Projectiles dropped Section E- Dynamics: clutches formulae still given, Section F: Machines: All new from second Syllabus Section G: SoM expanded to include 2 nd Engineer syllabus Double click on the pdf document attached below: Acrobat Document Attachment 1-Management Level Applied Mechanics Syllabus 2017 City of Glasgow College 3
4 Applied Heat (040-32) Entire new topic Hydrodynamics added. Please see the attachecd Topics added to Heat Engine Cycles: Two state & Multi stage compressor, Reheat and Optional heat exchanger (recuperator) Explain the concepts of energy related to the steady flow motion of liquids. Explain the volumetric and mass flow rates of liquids and state the continuity equation. Explain the concept of coefficient of velocity (CV), coefficient of contraction (CC), and coefficient of discharge (Cd) for a sharp edged orifice. Identify the various forms of energy possessed by a liquid in motion and state the expression for these in terms of energy and equivalent head. Apply the principle of the conservation of energy and the Bernoulli expression. Explain the effect of friction related to flow problems and how this is included with the Bernoulli statement. Apply the above to a venturi meter. For more details refer to attached documents Double click on the pdf document attached below: Acrobat Document Attachment 2-Mangement Level Applied Heat Syllabus 2017 City of Glasgow College 4
5 Electro-Technology (040-33) Kirchhoff s laws reduced to two unknowns Non-linear circuits removed Single phase circuits seem to be limited to transformers only Load line calculations for amplifier circuits seem to have disappeared For more details Double click on the pdf document attached below: Acrobat Document Attachment 3-Mangement Level Electro-Technology Syllabus Naval Architecture (040-34) New material added are the topics of Hydrostatics (from Mechanics), Grounding & Docking. There will be far fewer descriptive questions eg. Sections (H K) are not included in the new syllabus:- H Ship Stresses I Ship Construction J Classification, Structural Fire Protection, Life-Saving Appliances and Pollution Control K Vibration and Noise For more details Double click on the pdf document attached below: Adobe Acrobat Document Attachment 4-Mangement Level Electro-Technology Syllabus 2017 City of Glasgow College 5
6 Mathematics (040-35) The new 2nd Mathematics examination includes Complex numbers, Binary, Hexadecimal Number system and Logic. Arithmetic and Mensuration have been omitted. For more details Double click on the pdf document attached below: Adobe Acrobat Document Attachment 5-Mangement Level Mathematics Syllabus Engineering, Systems and Ship Drawing (040-36) Old syllabus of Engineering Drawing (042-24) is entirely changed to this Management Level Engineering, Systems and Ship Drawing (040-36), which have five subject areas: Mechanical Assembly Drawings Piping Systems Drawings Hydraulic & Pneumatic Systems Drawings Electrical Systems Drawings Ships Construction Drawings Adobe Acrobat Document Attachment 6-Mangement Level Eng Systems and Ship Drg Syllabus 2017 City of Glasgow College 6
