6 Meteorology Summary Statewide Overview, Next 24 Hours: The remnants of a cold front will be draped across North Florida today. This will be the focus for rain chances with scattered showers already ongoing along coastal Northeast Florida. The thunderstorm activity will become more widespread in Northeast Florida this afternoon as it tracks from east to west into the Big Bend. A few thunderstorms may be strong to briefly severe across North Florida with gusty winds, heavy rainfall, and frequent lightning. Localized rainfall totals over 2 will be possible in Northeast Florida. In the Peninsula, scattered showers will occasionally move onshore from the Atlantic and impact the metro areas of Southeast Florida and the Florida Keys. Only a stray thunderstorm is expected inland and along the West Coast. With less rainfall, the heat index will reach degrees this afternoon in Central and South Florida. Thunderstorms will begin to dissipate after sunset. The exception will be along the coast of Northeast Florida where activity may redevelop after midnight. Otherwise, lows will be in the middle to upper 70s, except the lower 80s in the Keys. Chance of Rain Today Today s High Temperatures

7 Coastal Hazards / Hydrology Rip Currents: Breezy onshore winds and swells from Tropical Storm Leslie will result in a high risk of rip currents for all Atlantic Beaches. Onshore winds will result in a moderate risk of rip currents for all Panhandle and Big Bend beaches. The West Coast has a low risk of rip currents. Wave heights will be 3-6 in the Atlantic and 1-2 in the Gulf. Remember, always swim within sight of a lifeguard. Rip currents can still occur on low risk days! Lake Okeechobee average elevation is feet, which is 0.34 feet below normal for this time of year. Hydrology: A River Flood Warning is in effect for the Myakka River at Myakka River State Park. While the Myakka River has crested, it will remain in minor flood stage through Friday. A few other rivers across the state are in action stage, but are not forecast to rise into flood stage. Rainfall amounts today will be scattered enough to not cause any river flood concerns. However, locally heavy rainfall of 1-2 in Northeast Florida will be possible. 8 Tropical Weather Tropics: Tropical Storm Leslie is located about 635 miles east of Bermuda or about 1,300 miles southwest of the Azores. Maximum sustained winds have increased to 60 mph and Leslie is moving west-southwest at 5 mph. Leslie will continue moving slowly southwestward for the next 48 hours before accelerating back to the northeast. Some strengthening is forecast, and Leslie could become a hurricane by mid-week. Direct impacts from Leslie are not expected in Bermuda or the U.S. but dangerous beach conditions are expected along much of the East Coast. The risk for a significant solar flare is near zero. While a brief increase in solar winds is possible today, geomagnetic storming is not forecast this week. The space weather threat to Florida is very low.
