6 Meteorology Summary Statewide Overview, Next 24 Hours: Gusty northeasterly winds will result in a chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms along coastal areas between Cape Canaveral and St. Augustine. Isolated showers are also possible in the Keys. For the rest of the state, expect dry conditions with cool temperatures. Afternoon high temperatures will only reach the low to mid 60s in the Panhandle, upper 60s to low 70s in Northeast Florida and mid to upper 70s in Central Florida, but will continue to be warm in the low 80s across South Florida. Tonight, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected through the night along the East Coast. Skies across the state will be partly to mostly cloudy. Lows will not be as cool tonight with upper 40s and lower 50s in North Florida, mid 50s to lower 60s in Northeast and Central Florida, and mid 60s to lower 70s in South Florida. 7 Coastal Hazards / Hydrology Rip Currents: Northeast winds of mph and waves of 6-8 will result in a high risk of rip currents for Northeast Florida beaches. Additionally, a Coastal Flood Watch is in effect from Duval through Flagler Counties. There is also a moderate risk of rip currents for east central Florida and Panhandle beaches. A low risk is expected elsewhere. Remember, always swim within sight of a lifeguard. Rip currents can still occur on low risk days! Rip Current Outlook Lake Okeechobee average elevation is feet, which is 1.61 feet below normal for this time of year. Hydrology: All rivers have receded below flood stage. Rainfall totals of 1-2 are possible along the East Coast from St. Augustine to Cape Canaveral. If the rain falls in a short period of time, it may result in some nuisance urban flooding. 9 Drought & Fire Weather Fire Weather: Low humidity and dry brush or soils will result in a moderate wildfire threat for much of the state today. County burn bans are in effect for 8 counties, including 3 in the Panhandle in the wake of Hurricane Michael and 5 in the Peninsula that are prohibited year-round. The Keetch-Byram Drought Index average for Florida is 329 (+/-0) on a scale from 0 (very moist) to 800 (very dry).
