6 Meteorology Summary Statewide Overview, Next 24 Hours: Patchy fog will linger until late this morning in the central sections of the Panhandle, but visibility has otherwise improved across the state. A cold front will move through North Florida today from west to east and then into the Peninsula tonight. A broken line of showers and thunderstorms will accompany this cold front followed by a few hours of light rain. The leading edge of the rainfall will move into Pensacola mid-day, Panama City mid to late afternoon, and Tallahassee this evening. However, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will develop out ahead of the cold front across the state today with the daytime heating. Even with clouds around, temperatures will approach 80 degrees statewide. By late this evening, light rain will be falling in much of the Panhandle with breezy northwest winds bringing in much cooler air. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will be moving into Northeast Florida and ongoing along the East Coast of the Peninsula. As the cold front approaches Tampa near midnight tonight, showers and thunderstorms will become more widespread in Central and South Florida. Rainfall will continue into much of Wednesday for areas south of the I-4 corridor. While gusty winds are possible today and tonight, severe weather is not expected. Nearly everyone in the state will see rainfall in the next 48 hours with rainfall totals generally a 0.5 or less. Low Temperatures Tonight Rain Chances Tonight (After 7pm ET)
7 Coastal Hazards / Hydrology Rip Currents: Breezy south to southeast winds ahead of the cold front today will result in a moderate to high rip current risk at all Panhandle and Atlantic beaches. Red flags will be flying from Escambia to Gulf County in the Panhandle and Palm Beach to Miami-Dade in Southeast Florida. A low risk is expected along the West Coast. Remember, always swim within sight of a lifeguard. Rip currents can still occur on low risk days! Lake Okeechobee average elevation is feet, which is 1.90 feet below normal for this time of year. Rip Current Outlook Hydrology: River Flood Warnings remain in effect for the Santa Fe River at Fort White and at Three Rivers Estates. At Fort White, the river is forecast to fall below flood stage Thursday morning. The Santa Fe River at Three Rivers Estates will remain nearly steady in minor flood stage into next week. The Ocklawaha River at Rodman Dam remains in moderate flood stage. Several other rivers throughout North Florida are in action stage today, but are falling. Forecasted rain will be light and will only create minor rises on Panhandle rivers. For more information on specific rivers, please visit the Southeast River Forecast Center here. Current & Forecast River Conditions
8 Drought & Fire Weather Fire Weather: While winds will be breezy today out of the south (8-12 mph) ahead of the front in the Peninsula and out of the northwest at mph in the Panhandle behind the front, widespread rain chances, high relative humidity, and increased soil moisture will limit the wildfire threat today. A low wildfire threat is forecast across the Florida Peninsula. All active wildfires are shown as 100% contained. A County Burn Ban remains in effect for the 5 counties that are in effect year-round. The Keetch-Byram Drought Index average for Florida is 124 (+5) on a scale from 0 (very moist) to 800 (very dry). There are zero Florida counties with a KBDI above 500.
