2 Himawari-8: JMA s Next-Generation Satellite First Shot of Himawari-8 (0240 UTC. 18 Dec. 2014) Himawari-8 successfully launched on 7 October Currently, Himawari-8 is in the in-orbit commissioning phase. Himawari-8 starts operation in July 2015 replacing MTSAT-2. Himawari-8/9 will observe East Asia and Western Pacific regions for a period of 15 years.

11 Support for User Readiness: Preparation for High-frequency Observation JMA provided proxy data to simulate Himawari-8 s high-frequency observation. (by special observations from the backup satellite, MTSAT-1R) Period: January March 2014 Interval: 10 minutes Area: around Australia Period: October 2014 Interval: 10 minutes Area: East Asia
12 Support for User Readiness: User Training The Australian Bureau of Meteorology runs the National Himawari-8 Training Campaign as a VLab activity. JMA appreciates the Bureau s efforts to promote the campaign for capacity development of users in the region. In conjunction with the Asia/Oceania Meteorological Satellite Users Conference (AOMSUC-6) to be held in November 2015 in Tokyo, JMA plans to hold a two-day training course for NMHSs.
13 Support for User Readiness: Equipment Support In cooperation with WMO and JICA (Japanese donor agency), JMA will support about 15 countries in RA II and RA V to install HimawariCast receiving stations. SATAID software developed by JMA will be installed into receiving stations, and enables to overlay NWP data and observation data onto Himawari-8 imagery. 14 Toward the New Generation of Satellite Meteorology JMA will advance the final preparations toward the start of Himawari-8 operation in July JMA will not change its satellite data policy. Free and Unrestricted International Exchange based on WMO Resolution 40 (Cg-XII) JMA will continue supporting user readiness to receive and utilize Himawari-8 data. JMA will share with other satellite operators the lessons and experiences learnt through Himawari-8 preparation as the first operator of next-generation geostationary meteorological satellites.
15 Furthermore Typhoon Noul approaching the Philippines (10 May 2015) Himawari-8 target area observation with 2.5 minutes intervals has a high potential to improve severe weather monitoring. JMA is willing to support NMHSs to the best possible extent by providing target area observation upon requests from NMHSs.
