2 ACTION: RA-3-4-SDR TRAINING TASK TEAM (SDR-TTT): FORMULATE A TRAINING AGENDA FOR THE REGION Considering training needs of the Regional stakeholders (at the level of forecasters, IT personnel, teachers and researchers) and Considering existing resources and events.

3 The SDR-TTT recommendations Implementation of a National Satellite Training Plan; Services to ensure that their forecasters and other relevant stakeholders complete the Foundation Online Training courses Services nominate a focal point as a Trainer - who will be provided with the necessary satellite interpretation and manipulation training. The National Satellite Training Plan must be submitted to the SDR-TTT if assistance is required in developing and/or identifying further training courses. IT training needs to be identified based on the user needs and priorities

Hardware:- Vendors of the receiving hardware will provide training in use and maintenance of the equipment if part of the contract. Software: Management, Manipulation and Scripting: There are few experts among the Regional services; Each service should identify an IT expert for training Visualization software training: Available visualization software: 1. McIDAS V - Freeware 2. AWIPS used by the US NWS Service 3. SIFT a tool developed by University of Wisconsin 4. SIGMAcast a tool developed by INPE Brazil

7 CoEs Training Plans - Argentina and Brazil Training Plans Argentina CoE Objective: The forecasters must learn the latest capacities provided by the new generation of geostationary satellites in order to apply them at the SMN operational offices to improve the weather forecast and warnings. Monitoring and diagnostic of potential situations of severe weather (showers, hail, devastating winds, and tornadoes). Short term forecast of severe storms (convection initiation and mesoscale convective complexes (MCCs)). Real time monitoring of the satellite precipitation estimates. Lightning monitoring associated with severe weather phenomena. Fog areas advisory for the aviation safety. Identification of different types of turbulence like, among others, convectively induced, mountain wave, and jet stream turbulence on behalf of the aviation safety. Volcanic ash monitoring and warnings on support of the Buenos Aires VAAC Brazil CoE Objective- The training plan for the Next Generation of Environmental Satellites, developed by the VLab Center of Excellence of Brazil, hosted at INPE/CPTEC, is focused on NOAA s GOES-R(16) geostationary satellite. Two main directions: i) one to advertise and prepare general users for GOES-R new capabilities and data access (user readiness); and ii) to train Brazilian National and Regional Meteorological Services and Weather Alarming Agencies (e.g. civil defenses) to use GOES- R imagery and products in their weather forecasting and monitoring systems.

These trainings include operating system usage, programming languages, scripting languages, and low level product generation automation.

10 Training was offered in 5 of the WMO official languages plus Korean and Portuguese. Participants from all WMO Regional Associations were reached.
