They rank 3rd in value f ash rps, being utranked by wheat and sugar beets. They are grwn in the irrigated areas f Gshen, Park, Big Hrn, Washakie, Fremnt, and Platte Cunties. Small areages are als grwn in Laramie, Cnverse, and Natrna Cunties (Table 1). 5 CHARACTERISTICS OF DRY-BEAN VARIETIES Sme fatrs whih determine the best kind and variety f beans t grw in a given latin are length f grwing seasn, mean temperature, availability f irrigatin water, sil type, humidity, prevalene f disease, and established markets. Early-maturing varieties are the mst desirable fr prdutin under the limited grwing seasn enuntered in Wyming. Fur varieties f Great Nrthern (G.N.) beans are grwn t sme extent in Wyming. Three f these varieties, G.N. U. f I. 31, 59, and 123 were develped at the University f Idah. The furth, G.N. 1140, was develped by the U. S. Department f Agriulture, Beltsville, Maryland. The University f Idah varieties are large white beans, resistant t mmn and ther msai variants. Hwever, tw f these varieties are suseptible t the urly tp virus. The varieties have a rather vigrus (extensive) vine and require abut 100 days t reah maturity under Wyming nditins. G.N has a determinate bush-type vine and matures frm 6 t 10 days earlier than the Idah varieties. Pint variety, U. f I. 111, is a largeseeded bean. It is resistant t mmn bean msai and urly tp but is suseptible t a variant strain f msai. This variety, a lw-bush type, requires abut 95 days t reah maturity. Red Mexian (R.M.) has been grwn in Wyming t a limited extent. It is resistant t mmn bean msai and urly tp but has an extremely heavy vine and matures t late fr extensive prdutin in the state. Wyming 166 (Hybrid 1A) is a pint variety. It was develped at the Pwell Statin by W. L. Smith and has prved t yield well in the years tested at that statin. The evaluatin f its resistane r suseptibility t varius bean diseases has nt TABLE 2 Suseptibility f Dry-Bean Varieties t Certain Virus Diseases Variety Cmmn msai Msai variant Curly tp Pint Ul #111 R S R Clumbia R R R Great Nrthern USDA # 1140 R R S Ul #123 R R S Ul #31 R R R Ul # 59 R R S Legend R=Resistant S=Suseptible
6 been mpleted. Seed f this variety will be made available later if it ntinues t yield well in Wyming trials. N mmerially grwn varieties f beans pssess a high degree f resistane t baterial blights, white mld, r rt rts. Sme varieties suh as Great Nrthern, Pint, and Red Mexian are fairly tlerant t hal blight but nt t mmn baterial blight (Table 2). DRY-BEAN VARIETY TRIALS Variety trials were nduted at the Pwell and Trringtn Agriultural* Substatins n irrigated land. Eah variety r seletin was planted at the rate f 70 lbs. per are in 4-rw plts repliated fur times. The rws f eah plt were 22 in. wide and 20 ft. lng. The usual ultural praties fr the area were fllwed. Ntes were taken n inidene f disease, plant habit, and maturity. Yield data at maturity were taken frm the enter tw rws f eah plt and adjusted t an are basis. Nine Pint, seven Great Nrthern, tw Red Mexian, three dark Red Kidney, and tw pink varieties were grwn ne r mre years. Part f these are fund in Tables 3 and 4. In additin, six Suth Amerian bean varieties were grwn fr ne r mre years. These were less suseptible t rt rt than the dmesti varieties grwn fr mmerial prdutin. Yields in at Trringtn were lw beause f inlement weather, hail, and early frst. SUMMARY Dry edible beans are an imprtant ash rp in Wyming. Bush-type bean varieties f limited grwth and early maturity are the mst desirable fr mmerial prdutin in Wyming. Pint U. f I. Ill ver the perid f 1957 thrugh 1962, frm the yield and maturity f the pint varieties tested, prved t be the best adapted fr the bean-grwing areas f bth the Big Hrn Basin and Sutheastern Wyming. Great Nrthern U. f I. 61, a bean variety nt yet released, yielded smewhat better at Pwell than Great Nrthern U. f I Great Nrthern USD A 1140 beause f early maturity is ne f the mst prdutive f the Great Nrthern varieties in less favrable seasns. The authrs wish t express their appreiatin t the Substatin Superintendents, Warren L. Smith at Pwell and William Miskimins at Trringtn, as well as their persnnel lr maintaining and aring fr the experimental plts. 5
