2 237 Jt&A July 1981 July 1984 Run ENGINEERING i':~aboratory UBRARY FRITZ ENGINEERING LABORATORY LEHIGH UNIVERSITY Bethlehem, PA. FIVE MILLION POUND TE~TING MACHINE HISTORY A brief histry f the calibratin f ur five millin pund testing machine fllws. When the machine was. new it was calibrated t the full capacity f 5,000,000 lbs. This calibratin was dne by using a cluster f 300,000 lb. capacity prving rings. The results f this calibratin dne in 1957 is given n Drawings , a cpy f which is attached. This prcedure was the best apprach available at the time. Hwever, the necessity f reading s many prving rings simultaneusly led t the cnclusin that the accuracy f the testing machine was better than the accuracy f the calibratin prcedure. Since 1971 the calibratin f the tw high ranges f the testing machine (2,000,000 and 5,000,000 lbs.) has been dne annually using a 1,000,000 lb. lad cell that has been previusly calibrated at the Natinal Bureau f Standards. Verificatin. f the machine fr lads abve 1,000,000 lbs. is dne whenever we calibrate lad cells. Calibratin traceable t the Natinal Bureau f Standards fr lads abve 1,000,000 lbs. must be dne using mre than ne lad cell. This prcedure is prbibitive and the results are questinable. We have a five millin capacity strain gage lad cell which is used nly t verify that the calibratin that is perfrmed up t a lad f ne millin punds can be prjected t the full capacity f the machine. What we d with ur wn lad cell is nt traceable t the Natinal Bureau f Standards but it serves as a means f checking ur machine which satisfies us. We nrmally make a calibratin run with ur wn lad cell fllwing calibratin f ur machine by an utside agent. This means t a lad f 1,200,000 lbs. when fur prving rings are used r t 1,000,000 lbs. since a lad cell f this capacity traceable t the Natinal Bureau f Standards has been available t us. On a few ccasins we have laded ur lad cell up t the -1-

4 Five Millin Pund Testing Machine Histry full capacity f the machine..an example f this is attached fr the date f 9/28/82. This is a verificatin rather than a calibratin because we cnsider ur machine t be mre accurate than ur lad cell. Our machine is cnstructed with a single hydraulic capsule lad cell fr six ranges f lading which are: 20,000 lbs. 50,000 lbs. 200,000 lbs. 500,000 lbs. 2,000,000 lbs. 5,000,000 lbs. By the time that each f the six ranges has been calibrated up t capacity, r t 1,000,000 lbs. in the case f the tw high ranges, we feel that the readings f the hydraulic capsule have been satisfactrily checked ut. ranges is attached fr the date 9/28/82. calibrated ten lad cells t 2,000,000 lbs. An example f a full calibratin f all. six In December f 1976 we All f the calibratin curves were linear and identical but the calibratin factr seemed t be different than was expected. checked n l2/l6/76.by an utside agent. is als attached. and nt ur machine. The calibratin f ur machine was A cpy f this calibratin It was fund that the ten lad cells were wrng We have been thrugh many prblems f this type during the last 25 years and the prblem has never been with the testing machine. The machine is calibrated annually in early Octber by an utside agent using lad cells calibrated by the Natinal Bureau f Standards. When the testing machine is in use the lad is read simultaneusly n tw ranges f the machine. The phtgraph n the back f the enclsed brchure shws that the cntrl panel f the machine has tw readut dials. Fr instance whenever the 2,000,000 lb. range is in use the lad is als read n the 5,000,000 lb. range. Whenever these tw readings check and the hydraulic capsule has been checked by the calibratin f all six ranges, we are cnfident that the calibratin f the machine is well within the ne percent accuracy required. The latest calibratin dated 9/29/83 is als attached. -2- In

5 Five Millin Pund Testing Machine Histry the calibratin histry f the machine the nly range f the machine that has ever been fund t have an errr greater than 'ne percent is the 20,000 lb. range. This prblem came up last in 1964 when this range was fund t have an errr f percent at a lad f 2,000 lbs. We feel that the calibratin.prcedure fr the machine is adequate and that the reading f lads n tw ranges f the machine fr lads abve 1,000,000 lbs. is a sufficient check fr lads abve the calibratin level. It has been ur experience in checking lad cells fr the past 25 years that the errr fr lads abve 1,000,000 lbs. is much less than ne percent and the percentage errr decreases fr higher lads. Any wrk which requires better calibratin data than we have n ur machine can nly be dne at the Natinal Bureau f Standards.
