Name: Mr. Schwartz Earth Science Period: Date: /10 Homework - Topographic Maps and What They Mean - Standard Earth Science Read pages and in your text. Then, answer the questions. Don t forget that the successful way to get information from your book is to look at the Key Ideas, section headers, and illustrations first. Then read the section. If there is something that you do not understand, remember that I am available periods 2, 3 and 5, and may be reached at jon_schwartz@whps.org. 1) What is a way (a mnemonic, a poem, etc.) that you could remember that latitude lines show distance north and south of the equator? 2) What is the Prime Meridian and where is it? 3) Each degree of latitude or longitude is divided into minutes, and each minute of latitude or longitude is divided into seconds. 4) To show distances on a map, we need a scale. If a map is labeled 1:1000, what would a distance of 1 inch on the map indicate in real life? Your answer should be in inches 5) USGS stands for: 6) What does a compass rose tell us? 7) The usual USGS map, or quadrangle, has a scale of 1:24,000. That means that an inch on the map = inches or 2, 000 feet. 8) On a topographic map, lines that connect points that are the same elevation above sea level are called: 9) The difference between 2 elevation lines on a map is called the: 10) There is not enough room on most topographic maps to label the elevation on all contour lines, so often only every fourth or fifth line is labeled. What do we call these lines?
11) The contour interval in this illustration is units X 12) The X could be at any height above and below feet above sea level. 13) If there is water shown on a topographic map, there might be lines called isobaths which show how deep the water is. How might you remember the name? Be clever! Remember that how the elevation changes over distance is the GRADIENT 14) When surveyors check the elevation of a spot, they may leave a benchmark. If you stepped on one, what would it look like? 15) How is a benchmark shown on a topographic map? 16) Contour lines in circles or ovals show: 17) What color is used for water on a topographic map?
Name: Period: 4 Which shows how far north and south of the equator you are: latitude or longitude? A map is marked with a scale labeled 1:250. That means that 1 inch on the map would be what distance in real life? What does a topographic map show us that ordinary road maps do not?
Name: Period: 8 What does a topographic map show us that ordinary road maps do not? What does a benchmark show? Isolines connect areas on a map that have the same value. Isobars, for instance, show areas with the same air pressure. What is the name of the lines that show elevation on a topographic map?
Name: Period: 6 What is the difference between contour lines called? There are 360 degrees in a circle. On the earth, that would cover a lot of land. To find smaller distances, we divide degrees into: Does a compass really point to the north pole?
Name: Period: 7 What does a topographic map show us that ordinary road maps do not? Isolines connect areas on a map that have the same value. Isobars, for instance, show areas with the same air pressure. What is the name of the lines that show elevation on a topographic map? Does a compass really point to the north pole?
Name: Question Bank Which shows how far north and south of the equator you are: latitude or longitude? If a map is marked with a scale labeled 1:250. Isolines connect areas on a map that have the same value. Isobars, for instance, show areas with the same air pressure. What is the name of the lines that show elevation on a topographic map? or What is the difference between contour lines called? What do we call the steepness of a slope? There are 360 degrees in a circle. On the earth, that would cover a lot of land. To find smaller distances, we divide degrees into: Does a compass really point to the north pole?
