Students are assumed t already have a slid backgrund in basic chemical cncepts, including: the cncepts f atms and mlecules; the mle; basics f chemical bnding; peridic table; mlecular shapes; chemical reactins and stichimetry; limiting reagents; slutins; redx reactins. It is assumed that CHEM 145 students are highly enthusiastic abut science, are willing t wrk hard, are independent learners, and are nt afraid t ask questins. Students with math r physics anxiety shuld get ver it in a hurry! Admissin: Students are admitted t CHEM 145 by scring 3 n the AP chemistry test, 5 n the High Level Chemistry IB exam, r by passing the general chemistry hnrs placement test ffered by the UW Office f Educatinal Assessment. Students receiving a brderline passing scre shuld cnsult with the chemistry advisrs (BAG 303) regarding apprpriate placement. Prerequisite: MATH 124 (calculus), r its equivalent, is a prerequisite r, at the least, a c-requisite. 1/6

2 LEARNING OBJECTIVES The central fcus f CHEM 145 is t develp quantitative prblem slving skills in chemistry. 1. Develp a detailed understanding f the fllwing tpics: a. Thery f gases b. Liquids, slids, phase diagrams, phase equilibrium c. The first and secnd laws f thermdynamics d. Chemical equilibrium 2. Learn t acquire and analyze data and crrectly reprt experimental results 3. Cnduct labratry exercises that: a. Explre the cncepts intrduced in lectures b. Develp labratry, data analysis, and scientific cmmunicatin skills COURSE MATERIALS Except where indicated therwise, all items are required and available frm the University Bkstre. Principles f Mdern Chemistry (7 th ed.), Oxtby, Gillis, and Campin. Brks/Cle Cengage Learning (2012). ISBN-10: UW Chemistry 145 Labratry Manual, Autumn 2014 (d nt buy the lab bk fr CHEM 142!) UW Chemistry Labratry Ntebk with numbered pages and carbnless duplicate pages Lab cat Safety gggles. Nte that safety glasses are nt allwed. Yu must use stckrm-apprved gggles. Calculatr. Calculatrs are recmmended n exams, but nly simple, nncalculus calculatrs. GENERAL PRACTICES AND POLICIES Yu are respnsible fr material cvered in class AND in the textbk (whether r nt it was cvered in lecture). Lectures will cver nly highlights f the textbk material. The curse website n Canvas will be used extensively, including fr the fllwing. The hmewrk assignments will generally be psted ne week befre the due date. Slutins t hmewrk assignments and exams will be psted n the website. Questins related t curse cntent shuld be psted n the curse discussin bard. Psting f a list f errata in Oxtby that are knwn by the publisher as f 10/16/ s t the instructr and TAs related t subject matter will be sent back fr psting n the curse discussin bard. Only send s t the instructr r TAs regarding persnal matters. Lecture and Discussin Sectin etiquette Arrive n time. If an emergency causes yu t arrive late r depart early, please d s quietly. D nt pack up yur belngings befre the end f class as this is disruptive. Minimize extraneus cnversatins, set cell phnes t silent, and refrain frm texting, etc. Hmewrk Assignments will typically cnsist f ~ten prblems, including sme frm yur textbk. One r tw hmewrk prblems will be graded fr cntent. The remainder f the prblems will be graded based n checking that yu made an attempt t slve the prblems in a thughtful and methdical fashin. Yu shuld check the psted slutins t make sure yu understand all the prblems since yu may receive a perfect hmewrk scre but still have incrrect answers. Yu may wrk with thers n hmewrk but must submit yur wn wrk. Hmewrk must be legible and reasnably well-rganized t receive credit. Quiz sectin Begins the first week f class. The quiz sectin will be used in several ways t explring the cncepts presented in the curse: ding practice prblems; taking actual quizzes; reviewing lecture r hmewrk. 2/6

3 Exams In the quiz sectin yu will explre the cncepts presented in the curse. Specifically, yu will cllabrate with yur clleagues n prblems that will help yu synthesize the material cvered in recent lectures. Sme quiz material will be graded. Punctuality. Yu must arrive t discussin sectin within the first five minutes f the class perid t btain participatin pints. If yu arrive later than that, yu will still be able t cmplete a wrksheet with yur grup, but the wrksheet will nt be accepted fr participatin credit. There are tw midterm exams (see schedule) which will be held in BAG 293 during yur regularly scheduled Tuesday lab sessins. Each midterm exam will be ~2 hurs. The cmprehensive final exam will be 110 minutes. Calculatrs are recmmended n exams, but nly nncalculus calculatrs are allwed. Smart phnes, tablets, etc., may nt be used. Sheets cntaining infrmatin t be prvided fr use n yur exams will be psted at least 1 week ahead f the exams. The infrmatin sheet will be n the exam cver sheet. Lab sectins. See the lab manual fr additinal details n labratry wrk and plicies, including safety, lab ntebk guidelines, lab reprt instructins, etc. GRADING The pint distributin fr the evaluative cmpnents f the curse is as fllws: Tw midterm exams (100 pints each) 200 pints 25% Final exam (200 pints) 200 pints 25% Hmewrk (20 pints fr HW1 & HW12, 10 pints fr HW2-11) 140 pints 17.5% Quiz sectin (quiz/activity scres, 120 pints ttal) 120 pints 15% Labratry 20 pints each) 140 pints 17.5% TOTAL 800 pints 100% Grade Distributin. The median in CHEM 145 has traditinally been 3.4, hwever this grade assumes very strng perfrmance frm the class verall and des little t prtect a weak student. As this is an hnrs curse, it is assumed academics is yur first pririty; n hmewrk, quiz sectin, exam, r lab scres are drpped! Re-grading. All re-grades must invlve a ttal f 5 pints r mre unless it was the simple result f a math errr in ttaling yur pints. Regrade requests must be submitted t yur TA within 48 hurs f its return t yu. Yu must attach a handwritten nte n a separate piece f paper (<1 page lng) explaining the reasn and lgic behind yur request. The re-grade will be carried ut by the riginal grader, with a view t crrecting errrs, nt reslving arguments abut hw the grading scheme was devised. If yu are nt satisfied with the utcme f yur initial appeal, yu can discuss the re-grade with the instructr. If yu have written n yur riginal graded dcument (exam, hmewrk, lab writeup) there will be n pssibility f additinal pints since it may be difficult t distinguish riginal wrk frm subsequent wrk. PLANNED ABSENCES, EXCUSED WORK, AND LATE WORK POLICIES All hmewrk, exams, quiz sectin activities, and lab reprts must be submitted n time. Missing any ne f these will result in a scre f zer fr that item unless the absence r wrk has been excused. Per departmental plicy, n make-up midterm exams r alternate final exams are ffered. In sme cases, labratry exercises may be rescheduled see the CHEM 145 lab manual fr details. Excused planned absences. If yu expect t be absent frm class, lab, quiz sectin, r an exam due t participatin in university-spnsred athletic events r anther excusable activity, prir apprval is required. Ntify the instructr by r in persn within the first tw weeks f class s that we may plan accrdingly. Yu are required t prvide dcumentatin f yur participatin in the event. Fr planned excused absences, we can usually make arrangements allwing yu t cmplete all required wrk. 3/6

4 Excused unplanned absences. Few situatins are cnsidered unplanned excused absences, and all requests fr excused wrk will require an explanatin with dcumentatin. Sme f the acceptable excuses include a dctr s nte, a car accident, jury duty, death f an immediate family member requiring yu t attend a funeral, etc. Bad traffic, a cunseling sessin, a jb interview, tests in anther class, a bad breakup, etc., are nt cnsidered excused absences. Fr excused unplanned absences, a grade fr the missing item will be calculated based n the scres f ther graded examples in that same categry relative t the rest f the class. Fr example, if yu have an excused unplanned absence fr midterm exam 2, we wuld calculate yur ttal n midterm exam 1 and the final relative t the rest f the class (e.g., 63 rd percentile) and wuld give yu a scre n midterm exam 2 that crrespnds t the 63 rd percentile n that exam. As per departmental plicy, missing tw lab sessins withut an excuse will result in an autmatic F in the class. Late wrk plicy. Late wrk is nt accepted. DISABILITY ACCOMMODATIONS Yur experience in this class is imprtant t us, and it is the plicy and practice f the University f Washingtn t create inclusive and accessible learning envirnments. Disability Resurces fr Students (DRS) ffers resurces and crdinates reasnable accmmdatins fr students with disabilities. If yu have nt yet established services thrugh DRS, but have a temprary r permanent disability that requires accmmdatins, please cntact DRS at (V), (TTY), r uwdrs@uw.edu r visit If yu have already established accmmdatins with DRS, please use the infrmatin prvided n the website fr this curse when submitting yur Alternative Testing Cntract t DRS via their nline system. Students with accmmdatins are slely respnsible fr submitting the Alternative Testing Cntract and scheduling the exams with DRS well in advance f the exam dates. If yu require accmmdatins in the labratry (including assistants and/r interpreters), please cntact the Undergraduate Services Directr (Bagley 303D) in persn in the first week f the quarter t discuss yur accmmdatins. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY In shrt yu shuld submit yur wn wrk n all curse cmpnents. The Student Cnduct Cde utlines the fllwing frms f academic miscnduct (see Intentinal misrepresentatin f credentials Falsificatin f data Plagiarism Failure t adhere t this cde f ethics will result in referral fr pssible disciplinary actin as described in the Student Cnduct Cde. Ask yur instructr r TAs if yu have questins abut what might crss the line. All data analysis and writing yu submit shuld be yurs alne, even if yu cllected data with a partner. Unfrtunately, we ften find examples f plagiarism in which lab reprts are cpied frm smene else. WHERE TO GET HELP Ask questins at lecture, at quiz sectin, r (time permitting) at lab sessin. Office hurs are held five days a week in the chemistry department study center. A TA r the instructr will be present. These are als great pprtunities t study tgether with yur classmates. Frm yur wn study grup. Yu can use the curse discussin bard t find interested classmates. The curse website discussin bard is a gd place t pst questins. While yu are there, take a lk at yur classmates psts and see whether yu can help them. Free tutring at CLUE, the Center fr Learning and Undergraduate Enrichment. This dcument will be updated with days/times t visit CLUE. 4/6
