The ffice is lcated in DSTU 102. Yu may als reach the ffice by telephne at r by fax at It is the student s respnsibility t arrange accmmdatins with the instructr. RESTRICTIONS ON RECORDING: A student shall nt make r receive any recrding, including but nt limited t audi and vide recrdings r phtgraphs, during any class r meeting withut the faculty member s permissin. Further, the student des nt have permissin t pst class lectures n the web. CLASS RULES: Cell Phne Plicy: Cell phnes are disruptive t yur learning and t my teaching. Therefre, cell phnes must be turned ff and put away fr the duratin f class. If yur cell phne is ut fr any reasn during class, I will cnfiscate it until the end f class and deduct 10 pints frm yur next test scre. Cheating is nt permitted. Any frm f academic dishnesty will result in an F in the curse and may result in HCC disciplinary actin. See the HCC Cde f Student Cnduct fr mre infrmatin. ATTENDANCE: Attendance will be taken frm a seating chart during every class. Yu are expected t attend every class meeting. I will nt re-teach nr prvide ntes fr material that yu missed when yu were absent. It is yur respnsibility t get ntes frm a classmate fr any classes that yu miss, s yu need t make a cuple friends in the class. Attendance cunts as 2% f yur final grade in the curse. The attendance grade is calculated by dividing the number f days yu were in class by the number f days that the class met. Yu are expected t arrive n time. Late arrivals will be marked as Tardy, and 2 Tardy s will equal 1 unexcused absence when calculating the attendance grade. If yu need t leave class early, let me knw befre class begins. If yu leave class withut infrming me prir t the start f class, then I will mark yu absent fr that day. Page 2
3 YOU TRY: Yu Try s are prblems that I ask yu t attempt n yur wn r with the help f yur classmates. Smetimes I will give yu time t cmplete them during class. Other times I will ask yu t wrk n them after class and bring them t the next class meeting. Unless I tell yu therwise, always write Yu Try prblems n an index card. Any cllected Yu Try prblems will be graded based n yur effrt. Because yu are wrking these prblems as yu are learning a tpic, I dn t expect them t be exactly crrect. But I d expect yu t put in yur best effrt. Occasinally I will ntify yu f an upcming Yu Try Quiz. I will grade Yu Try Quizzes n crrectness rather than effrt since yu knw abut them ahead f time, and the quiz scres will cunt tward yur Yu Try average. The average f the cllected Yu Try prblems will cunt as 3% f yur verall grade in the class. HOMEWORK: The nly way t learn math is by wrking exercises, s hmewrk is required fr the curse. All hmewrk will be cmpleted nline using the MyMathLab sftware. Once registratin is cmplete, yu can access MyMathLab by either clicking the MyMathLab Curse Hme link in MyHCC r by ging directly t If yu d nt have a cmputer at hme, there are cmputer labs thrughut campus that can be used fr cmpleting yur hmewrk assignments. MyMathLab hmewrk is due by 11:59 p.m. n the dates specified n the attached schedule. A 25% penalty will be applied t any questins submitted after the due date (and time) has passed. Yur hmewrk average will be recrded at the start f the final exam. N hmewrk can be cmpleted after this time. Yu can re-wrk a prblem as many times as necessary in MyMathLab until yu get the crrect answer. If yu attempt the same prblem 3 times and get it wrng (a red x will appear ver the prblem number alng the tp f the windw), just hit the Similar Exercise buttn and the prblem will regenerate with new values. Since yu can re-wrk missed prblems, there is really n reasn t nt have a perfect hmewrk scre (r at least an A )!!! The tw lwest hmewrk scres will be drpped and the average f the remaining assignments will be yur hmewrk average, which is wrth 20% f yur final grade in the curse. If yu d nt have a passing grade n the hmewrk, yu will almst certainly NOT pass the curse. TESTS: The Best Test Average cunts as 60% f the curse grade. Yur Best Test Average is calculated as fllws: Add tgether yur three best unit test scres (which will already include any bnus pints earned frm ding the Test Review Assignments in MyMathLab). T that sum, add any bnus pints earned frm ptins B, C, & D. (See page 5 fr a detailed explanatin f bnus pint ptins.) Divide the ttal sum by three. The result is yur Best Test Average. There will be NO makeup tests. If yu miss ne test, yur remaining three test scres will cunt tward yur Best Test Average. Any additinally missed tests will receive a grade f zer. If yu knw that yu will miss a test yu must make prir arrangements with me in rder t take the test in the testing center BEFORE THE REST OF THE CLASS TAKES THE TEST. N tests will be administered after the class has taken a test except fr extreme circumstances. If there has been an extreme circumstance that caused yu t miss a test, then yu need t ntify me via as sn as pssible (and befre the next class meeting). Page 3
4 FINAL EXAM: A mandatry final exam will be administered during the 2-hur time perid shwn n the lecture schedule n the last page f this syllabus. The exam is cumulative (cvers material frm the entire semester) and is all multiple-chice. Answers must be written n a green Scantrn frm, which can be purchased at the Dale Mabry Bkstre. Under n circumstances will a student be exempt frm taking the final. Final exam review packets will be prvided by the instructr. The final exam is wrth 15% f the verall grade in the curse. 5 BONUS POINT OPPORTUNITIES: There are several ways t get bnus pints in this class, as utlined belw. A. Test Reviews in MyMathLab: Fr each test, there is a Test Review hmewrk assignment in MyMathLab. These ptinal test reviews will cunt as bnus pints n each test rather than cunting tward yur hmewrk average. The Test Reviews are due at class-time (2:30 p.m.) n each Test Day, and they are nt transferrable t ther tests. A scre f % n the MyMathLab Test Review will earn 2 bnus percentage pints n the class test. A scre f 80 89% n the MyMathLab Test Review will earn 1 bnus percentage pint n the class test. YOU CAN RECEIVE A MAXIMUM OF 10 BONUS POINTS FROM OPTIONS B, C, & D B. Dnating Whle Bld: If yu dnate whle bld (a regular bld dnatin), I will award yu 5 bnus pints. Yu can dnate whle bld every 8 weeks, s if yu plan t d this twice during the semester, yu need t dnate near the beginning f the semester s there will be time t dnate again befre the end f the semester. C. Dnating Red Bld Cells r Platelets: If yu dnate red bld cells r platelets, it cunts as tw bld dnatins, s I will award yu 10 bnus pints fr that ne dnatin. Fr Optins B r C: Print ut a cpy f the OneBld Dnatin Frm (OBDF) fund in MyHCC and take it with yu when yu g t dnate. Yu will need t fill ut the tp prtin, and ask a OneBld emplyee t fill ut the bttm prtin. Bring me the filled-ut OBDF plus the slip f paper they give yu that has yur name n it. Visit t find a dnatin lcatin near yu. D. Vlunteering: I award 1 bnus pint fr every 1 hur f vlunteer wrk perfrmed during the semester. As prf, ask the vlunteer crdinatr r smene in charge t write a letter that states: 1) What yu did during yur time vlunteering, 2) Hw lng yu vlunteered fr, 3) The dates yu vlunteered n, and 4) That persn s name and phne number. Alternatively, yu can fill ut the Vlunteer Hurs Frm fund n ur curse Hme Page in MyHCC. In summary, if yu want t earn the MAXIMUM f 10 pints, yu can d any ONE f these ptins: Dnate whle bld TWICE (10 pints) Dnate red bld cells r platelets nce (10 pints) Dnate whle bld nce (5 pints) Vlunteer fr 5 hurs (5 pints) Vlunteer fr 10 hurs (10 pints ) Prf f bld/rbc/platelet dnatin r vlunteering must be submitted t me n later than the start f the final exam. ASSIGNMENT OF FINAL COURSE GRADES: Infrmatin abut grading is fund in the Grading, Attendance, Yu Try, Hmewrk, Tests, Final Exam, and Bnus Pint Opprtunities prtins f this syllabus. Please familiarize yurself with these plicies s there are n unexpected surprises at the end f the semester. Nte that I give yu every pssible pprtunity t succeed in this curse. 25% f yur grade cmes frm Attendance (2%), Yu Try (3%), and Hmewrk (20%) all cmpnents that are slely based n effrt. Thse cmpnents shuld all have perfect scres, and if they d nt, then it is because yu chse t miss class and/r nt cmplete all assignments. Additinally, I drp the tw lwest hmewrk scres, and I drp yur lwest test scre. Lastly, I give yu ample pprtunities t earn bnus pints thrughut the semester. Therefre, when I assign grades at the end f the semester, I d nt make judgment calls. Grades are assigned based n a literal translatin f the numerical scre that yu have earned t a letter grade using a 10-pint scale: A: 89.5 and abve B: 79.5 t C: 69.5 t D: 59.5 t F: Belw 59.5 I will nt raise anyne s letter grade just because it is clse t the cutff. The nly way that grade assignment is fair fr everyne is if I fllw the same standards fr every student in every class. Page 5
