CLASS POLICIES Attendance expectatins: Attendance in lecture and lab/recitatin is mandatry. I will exercise my discretin t drp yu frm the curse after 2 unexcused absences, withut ntice. Additinally, any student wh misses the first tw lectures f the term r has nt cmpleted any assignments in Cnnect by the end f the secnd week will be drpped. If yu must miss a lecture r lab, me ASAP in rder in rder t get yur absence excused and discuss when yu will turn in any allwable assignments. Lectures and labs will begin prmptly; late arrival r leaving early is disrespectful f yur classmates. In special cases, please discuss this with me. preparatin: assignments will be available n LearnSmart/Cnnect ne week befre they are due. Befre each class, yu shuld read the assigned sectins in the textbk and cmplete the assignment. The questins are generally intended t be wrked in minutes and will typically cver basic cncepts and definitins. These assignments are due the night befre class at 11:59 PM; yu may cmplete them after the due date fr practice, but will receive n credit. At the beginning f the week, yu will als have a muddy pint assignment, in which I ask yu t cnsider the previus week s material and nte ne cncept that yu wuld like t see reviewed in class. participatin: Sme prtin f every class perid will be spent wrking n in-class exercises, which will be cllected fr a grade. I encurage and will smetimes require yu t wrk in small grups, but unless therwise specified, the wrksheet yu turn in at the end f class must be yur wn wrk. These wrksheets cannt be made up if yu miss a class. Hmewrk: Hmewrk assignments will be available n Cnnect; in general, hmewrk is due ne week after we cver the material. This means that sme weeks will see tw hmewrk assignments due. In general, assignments are due at 11:59 PM, except assignments due the day f an exam, which are due when class starts. Hmewrk assignments are intended t give yu additinal practice n difficult cncepts as well as pprtunities t synthesize the knwledge yu have acquired in new ways. These assignments shuld take 2-3 hurs and can be cmpleted in several sessins (which is a better idea than starting a few hurs befre they are due!). Lab/Recitatin: Our weekly lab/recitatin time will be used fr experiments, demnstratins, prblem slving, lecture, and review sessins. Infrmatin cvered during these perids will be n exams. 3
4 4 Persnal Prtective Equipment (PPE) is required fr lab experiments and cnsists f: gggles, clsed flat shes (n high heels, n expsed tes r heels), clthing cvering yur lwer extremities, and lab cats. Yu will nt be allwed in lab withut prper PPE n lab days (indicated n the last tw pages f the syllabus). Yu are respnsible fr reading the lab materials ahead f time and cmpleting the Pre-Lab assignment, as well as writing up and analyzing yur results in Pst-Lab assignments. On days we d nt cnduct experiments, we will have lab wrksheets, which may r may nt include a pre-lab prtin. Pst-labs fr the previus week and pre-labs fr the current week are due in the first 5 minutes f lab. Pints may be deducted fr tardiness, lab safety vilatins, and ther class disruptins. Yur lwest lab grade will be drpped. Exams: Yu will be allwed a 3 x 5 HANDWRITTEN ntecard fr all exams. I will prvide yu with a ntecard the week befre each exam. N additinal material may be attached t the card. Fr the final exam, yu will be allwed an 8.5 x 11 HANDWRITTEN reference sheet. Yu will be prvided with a peridic table and scratch paper fr each exam. Fr each exam, bring yur UNM ID, a #2 pencil, and a calculatr with n prgrams stred in it (i.e., n graphing calculatrs will be permitted). Cheating n an exam will result in a grade f F in the class. Late assignments and make-up plicy: quizzes and muddy pints will nt be accepted late. Hmewrk may be cmpleted late fr partial credit, thugh 5% will be deducted frm yur assignment grade fr every day yur hmewrk is late, t a maximum f -100% after 20 days. Late pst- and pre-labs will nt be accepted unless they are late because yu were absent the day they were due. If yu miss a lab fr any reasn, turn in any assignment that was due that day as sn as pssible, but n later than the next class sectin yu are able attend. We can discuss arrangements when yu me in rder t avid an unexcused absence. Exams, labs, and class participatin wrksheets cannt be made-up if yu are absent. Yu are welcme t cmplete wrksheets fr days and labs yu missed, but they will nt be accepted fr credit. Hwever, life happens, s I d drp yur lwest midterm exam scre and lab grade. Grades will be psted n UNM Learn. If yu take the final exam, yu will nt be able t drp the class and will be assigned a letter grade A-F. The grade bundaries belw will be finalized at the end f the semester. I WILL NOT change final grades unless there has been a legitimate errr in grading. Yur final grade will be based n yur prgress in the fllwing categries preparatin (reading quizzes and muddy pints) 10% In-class participatin/wrksheets 10% Hmewrk assignments 20% Lab assignments 20% Fur cumulative, in-class tests (lwest will drpped) 30% Mandatry cmprehensive final exam 10% Grades bundaries: A (100-90%), B (89-80%), C (79-70%), D (69-60%), F (59% and belw) Campus plicy reminders Equal Access Services: If yu have a dcumented disability r psychlgical/medical cnditin that may affect yur perfrmance in this class, please register with Equal Access Services as sn as pssible s I can prvide yur accmmdatins in a timely manner. EAS can prvide a quiet place t take exams,
5 additinal time, and additinal services if there is a dcumented need. Fr mre infrmatin, please see their website at Academic hnesty: Each student is expected t maintain the highest standards f hnesty and integrity in academic and prfessinal matters. The University reserves the right t take disciplinary actin, including dismissal, against any student wh is fund respnsible fr academic dishnesty. Any student wh has been judged t have engaged in academic dishnesty in cursewrk may receive a reduced r failing grade fr the wrk in questin and/r fr the curse. Academic dishnesty includes, but is nt limited t, dishnesty in quizzes, tests r assignments; claiming credit fr wrk nt dne r dne by thers; hindering the academic wk f ther students; and misrepresenting academic r prfessinal qualificatins within r utside the University. Depending n the severity f the ffense, students caught cheating may receive a zer n the assignment, be drpped frm the curse, r receive an F in the curse. Dn t cheat. Sexual miscnduct and gender discriminatin: In an effrt t meet bligatins under Title IX, UNM faculty, Teaching Assistants, and Graduate Assistants are cnsidered respnsible emplyees. This designatin requires that any reprt made t a faculty member, TA, r GA regarding sexual miscnduct r gender discriminatin must be reprted t the Office f Equal Opprtunity and the Title IX Crdinatr. Fr mre infrmatin n this plicy, see: My advice t yu fr succeeding in this curse Keep up with the reading and class preparatin assignments: Because I expect yu t cme t class having cmpleted the relevant reading, we will spend little classtime n definitins and instead fcus n applying cncepts frm the text and tackling mre difficult prblems. In ther wrds, yu will nt get the full benefit f class withut preparatin. Study better this is nt necessarily the same thing as studying mre. Quality ver quantity! Each chapter has Learning Outcmes psted n UNM Learn; yu can use these as study guides t check whether yu can accmplish the specific tasks laid ut in each utcme. Dn t just read the textbk ver and ver again; instead, try summarizing key pints frm each sectin, in yur wn wrds, and identifying subjects that yu can t satisfactrily explain as areas fr further study. D practice prblems frm the textbk and n practice exams dn t just read the answers! Any time yu make an errr r get an incrrect answer, re-cver that tpic t make sure yu understand what yu did incrrectly and hw t avid the same prblem in the future. Frm study grups! Yu benefit when yu explain a cncept t anther student and when anther student can d the same fr yu, and everyne benefits frm appraching prblems frm multiple angles. Abve all, please dn t be afraid t ask fr help! If yu find that yu are struggling with any aspect f the curse, talk t me as sn as pssible. If yu feel lst, plan t attend at least ne ffice hur a week and bring a list f specific questins. I am here t help yu succeed in chemistry and can als help with develping yur wn study and preparatin strategies. 5
