We use Chapters 21 t 31, which are published as bund, 3 hle binder, and E-text versins. Mastering Physics Online Hmewrk System: Each student must btain an access cde kit that allws use f the nline hmewrk system. In additin t using the access cde, each student must enrll in the Mastering Physics curse fr his/her Physics 122 sectin using a curse identifier cde supplied by the instructr. Hmewrk assignments and tutrials psted n-line in Mastering Physics will be autmatically graded. Specific infrmatin will be available directly frm all the instructrs, and/r their web sites. The NJIT bkstre will stck Vlume 2 text bundles (chaps bund with the access cde and E-text kit - ISBN = r ). Any ther versin f the text cntaining Chapters is OK. Any access cde kit bught separately must be fr the right text, specified abve, s check befre yu buy. iclickers will NOT be used. There will be weekly in-class quizzes Web Sites: Instructrs may pst lecture ntes, prblems, grades, etc. n their web sites. S check there ften. Learning Outcmes: This curse is the secnd f the calculus-based intrductry Physics series. Yu shuld expect t spend a minimum f 2 hrs. in utside wrk fr each hur spent in class each week. Yu can expect t be assessed n learning utcmes by means f 3 cmmn exams, a final exam, in-class quizzes, scres n hmewrk assignments, and a small class participatin cmpnent. The principal learning utcme is t demnstrate understanding and mastery f classical electricity and magnetism up t AC circuits, nt including Maxwell s Equatins r beynd. The subject matter areas yu will be assessed n include electric charge, electric and magnetic fields, frces n statinary and mving charges and currents due t electrstatic and magnetic fields, electrstatic ptential and ptential energy, Gauss Law, capacitance, current, resistance, DC circuits, the Bit-Savart Law, Ampere s Law, Faraday s Law, inductance, RC circuits, LR circuits, LCR circuits, AC circuits including Phasr diagrams and resnant scillatins. In any/all f the abve subject areas, yu shuld be able t: Page 1 recall and use the cnceptual and mathematical definitins and be able t explain them. explain the cnceptual and mathematical relatinships between quantities used.

2 use symmetry arguments, sketches and diagrams, graphs, field maps, algebra, trignmetry, and basic integral and differential calculus methds in interpreting material using reasned arguments and als in interpreting and setting up textbk-level prblems. explain and manipulate equatins and techniques develped in the text, lectures, prblem examples, and in the curse f wrking prblems. apply the skills abve t successfully slve textbk-level prblems with numeric, symblic, r cnceptual answers. critically evaluate the sundness and precisin f yur wn answers, explain and interpret yur slutins t prblems in a way that shws understanding, and identify and appraise the range f applicability f yur results, and their limitatins. Apply cnceptual and mathematical definitins including flux f vectr fields, scalar ptentials, and relevant line, surface and vlume integral relatinships t vectr fields Utilize dimensinal arguments, scaling arguments and limits t determine validity f calculatins Slve symblically labeled DC circuits with up t three independent currents Be able t carry ut algebraic manipulatins with cmplex numbers applied t multiple lp AC circuits Determine the slutins fr first rder rdinary differential equatins using integratin Slve prblems with nntrivial current r charge distributins by integratin Determine apprximate slutins fr E and B fr limiting cases by truncating a series expansin Slve prblems with numeric, symblic, r cnceptual answers. Emphasis will be placed n symblic slutins Final Letter Grades will be based n a term average fr the semester s wrk that includes the cmmn exam scres, the final exam, in-class quizzes, and the term s hmewrk scre. Here are the apprximate weights t be used fr calculating the term average scre: 51% fr all three cmmn exams (17 % each) 29% fr the final exam 10% fr hmewrk 10% fr in-class quizzes Extra credit may be given fr ptinal exam prblems, fr active class participatin, etc. Negative credit may be given fr being late, creating nise r therwise interfering with the wrk f the class. The term average values used as cutffs fr varius letter grades will be in the apprximate range f: 85 % fr A, 80% fr B+, 70% fr B, 65 % fr C+, 55% fr C, and 50 % fr D and < 50% fr F Examinatins: There will be three Cmmn Exams plus a cmprehensive Final Exam. The schedule is: Cmmn Exam 1: Mnday, Oct. 8, :15 5:45 PM (1.5 hrs) Cmmn Exam 2: Mnday, Oct. 29, :15 5:45 PM (1.5 hrs) Cmmn Exam 3: Mnday, Nv. 19, :15 5:45 PM (1.5 hrs) Cmprehensive Final Exam: After Dec. 17, hrs In-class quizzes cvering preceding r current wrk may als be given during lectures and/r recitatins, and the grades will cunt tward yur final curse grade. There will be n make-up quizzes and nrmally n make-up cmmn exams. Students wh miss a cmmn exam usually receive a scre f zer fr that exam. Students wh miss tw cmmn exams autmatically fail the curse. Students wh expect t be absent frm a cmmn exam shuld discuss their situatin with their instructr PRIOR TO their absence. In rder t qualify fr a (rare) "make-up" cmmn exam a student needs t dcument the reasn fr nt being able t take the test as scheduled. Under NJIT standard plicy, the dcumentatin shuld be presented t the student s Physics 121 instructr AND t the Dean f Students - (973) , 2nd flr Campbell Entry. BOTH the Physics 121 instructr and the Dean f Students must cncur in permitting a "make-up" cmmn exam. Students wh miss cmmn exams and d nt cntact and present dcumentatin t their instructrs within 7 days f the cmmn exam will receive a scre f zer fr that cmmn exam Attendance will be taken at all classes and exams. Mre than 3 unexcused absences (in ttal) is excessive. If yu have excusable absences cntact yur instructr r the Dean f Students. Page 2

3 Withdrawal: If yu must withdraw frm the curse, d it fficially thrugh the Registrar befre the last withdrawal date. If yu simply stp attending and taking exams yur instructr will have n ptin ther than t assign a curse grade f "F". Help: The Physics Dept. may prvide drp-in tutring n a schedule t be psted. Mre infrmatin will be available frm yur instructr r the Physics Department ffice n the 4 th flr f Tiernan after the term starts. Physics tutring is als available thrugh the CAPE and Learning Cmmunities rganizatins. If yu are having truble in this curse visit r yur instructr; d nt simply hpe fr a miracle and fall further behind. Hnr Cde Vilatins r Disruptive Behavir: NJIT has a zer-tlerance plicy fr cheating f any kind and fr disruptive student behavir. Vilatins will be reprted t the Dean f Students. The penalties range frm a minimum f failure in the curse plus disciplinary prbatin up t expulsin frm NJIT. Avid situatins where yur wn behavir culd be misinterpreted as dishnrable. Students are required t agree t the NJIT Hnr Cde n each exam. Turn ff all smart and cellular phnes, wireless devices, cmputers, and messaging devices f all kinds during classes and exams. Please d nt eat, drink, r create nise in class that interferes with the wrk f ther students r instructrs. The Schedule n Page 4 lists the tpics cvered, and text readings. D the hmewrk prblems: it is almst impssible t succeed in physics curses withut wrking a lt f prblems. The secnd t last clumn prvides additinal recmmended prblems t be cvered in the recitatin. Please wrk them ut befre the recitatin. Read the assigned sectins f the text befre the lecture cvering that material. Submit the weekly hmewrk assignments befre they are due. Students wh d nt submit hmewrk are autmatically lwering their average by 10 %. The in-class quiz slutins will be psted each week Specific infrmatin fr the Mastering Physics hmewrk system: Yu will have t create an accunt n the MP system if yu d nt have ne already. Yu may nt be able t sign up fr the curse yur instructr is using until yu have a valid Mastering Physics access cde. S acquire ne early and cntact yur instructr if this is a prblem. Yur instructr will annunce a Mastering Physics curse identifier (MPTYSON05806) fr yu t use when enrlling in yur specific class. Use yur NJIT address as the lgn ID fr yur accunt.. The Mastering Physics lgin is Click n Student in the upper left f the bx. Respnd yes that yu have an access cde (create an accunt if yu d nt already have ne). Input yur name exactly as it appears n NJIT s recrds: last name first, fllwed by a cmma and yur first and pssibly middle name. Likewise, enter yur 9 digit NJIT ID where indicated. Fr yur wn reference, recrd the unique curse number annunced by yur instructr, and yur Lgin ID and Passwrd. Instructrs cannt access frgtten lgins r passwrds. MPTYSON05806 Page 3
