Catalg Descriptin Catalg Descriptin The fundamentals f acustics and its applicatin t music-vibratins, wave, hearing, pure tnes, cmplex tnes, resnance, scales, cnsnance, and the physics f musical instruments. Students must take 1050 and 1050L tgether t get credit fr GE Area B1. II. Required Cursewrk and Backgrund Prerequisite(s) Prerequisite: Nne. Crequisite: PHY 1050L Crequisite(s) Pre r Crequisite(s) Cncurrent III. Expected Outcmes List the knwledge, skills, r abilities which students shuld pssess upn cmpleting the curse.* On successful cmpletin f this curse, students will be able t: 1. Perfrm simple calculatins, including relating the wavelength and frequency f a wave, relating intensity t pwer and distance, relating intensity t decibels, and determining the resnant frequencies f simple musical devices frm their shapes. 2. Describe the physical principles underlying interference, resnance, reverberatin, and damping, and hw these principles determine the frequency f sund prduced by a musical instrument and the quality f the sund perceived in a rm. 3. Describe the physical and bilgical principles underlying the receptin f sund by the ear, and their relatinship t the perceived tne and pitch. 4. Explain the principle f superpsitin, its relatinship t the spectrum f detected sund waves, and the physical means by which spectra can be measured. If this is a curse fr the majr, describe hw these utcmes relate t the missin, gals and bjectives f the majr prgram. Explain hw the curse meets the descriptin f the GE SubArea(s). Please select apprpriate utcmes accrding t the GE Area/SLO mapping. Acustics is a branch f physics that cmbines fundamental principles (wave prpagatin, energy, interference, etc.) with technlgical applicatins, and bilgical relevance (hearing in mst animals, echlcatin in bats and whales), while being intrinsic t music and the perfrming arts. While the emphasis in this curse will be n the artistic applicatins f sund, all key aspects f the physical thery f sund will be examined, and the bilgy f hearing will, by necessity, be cvered, as the ears are the means by which the musical arts are experienced. As a curse that presents fundamental physical science principles in a cntext f wide relevance t students' develpment f brader cultural appreciatin, this curse is fully in keeping with the bjectives f general educatin.

5 AS GE, PHY 1050 Physics f Musical Sunds 5 Describe hw these utcmes relate t the assciated GE Learning Outcmes listed belw.* Ia. Write effectively fr varius audiences.students will prduce written explanatins f their reasning in hmewrk prblems invlving calculatins, and will prvide shrt (paragraph-lng) answers t cnceptual questins abut physical situatins. Questins requiring written explanatins f reasning, r written interpretatin f physical situatins, will be included n graded hmewrk assignments as well as tests. Additinally, the crequisite fr PHY 1050 will be PHY 1050L, a labratry curse with weekly written reprt assignments. The tpics in PHY 1050 and 1050L are intended t be mutually reinfrcing, s that althugh the lab reprts in 1050L are nt frmally a cmpnent f 1050, all f the students in 1050 will be part f an integrated pair f curses with significant writing thrughut this instructinal experience. Id. Cnstruct arguments based n sund evidence and reasning t supprt an pinin r cnclusin. Students will prduce prblem slutins that nt nly give a crrect numerical result, but als crrect reasning leading t the result. Students will explain why they used a particular principle fr each step f the calculatin, why they translated a verbal descriptin f a physical situatin int a particular gemetrical mdel r equatin, r why they chse a particular physical principle r phenmenn as being the relevant ne t the situatin described in the prblem r questin. Ie. Apply and cmmunicate quantitative arguments using equatins and graphical representatins f data. Students will slve quantitative prblems using simple equatins (e.g. relatinship between wavelength and frequency, r relatinship between intensity, pwer, and distance) explaining in their slutins hw the principle underlying the equatin applies t the physical situatin in the prblem, and hw using the equatin will yield a physically meaningful answer t the prblem that was psed t the student. Additinally, students will answer questins that require them t prduce a graph that represents physical phenmena such as sund waves in air, the vibratins f strings, r the spectrum f sund received by a micrphne. (See particularly Curse SLO 1) IIa. Apply scientific methds and mdels t draw quantitative and qualitative cnclusins abut the physical and natural wrld. Students will slve simple quantitative prblems, and answer cnceptual questins, in which they apply physical principles t predict such things as the frequency f sund prduced by a given instrument, r the magnitude f a signal received by a micrphne, r the magnitude f the neural signal prduced by an ear in respnse t a sund. General Educatin Outcmes* Ia. Write effectively fr varius audiences Id. Cnstruct arguments based n sund evidence and reasning t supprt an pinin r cnclusin. Ie. 8 AS GE, PHY 1050 Physics f Musical Sunds 8 IX. Evaluatin f Outcmes Describe the methds t be used t evaluate students learning, i.e. written exams, term papers, prjects, participatin, quizzes, attendance, etc.* Students will be evaluated by three methds:1) Hmewrk assignments, dne weekly utside f class: In these assignments, students will prduce written slutins t prblems, including numerical calculatins, justificatins f each step in the calculatins, diagrams (with written explanatins), and graphs illustrating the qualitative and quantitative behavir f sund waves, the bjects prducing the waves, r the bjects receiving the waves. These assignments will be graded bth fr the crrectness f the result, the validity f the prcess, and the clarity f the justificatin given fr the prcess. 2) Quizzes, dne either individually either in-class r nline befre class: Quizzes will be shrter than hmewrk assignments, given at regular intervals t incentivize practice f what was cvered previusly and preparatin fr what is t be cvered next. Althugh shrter than the weekly hmewrk assignments, ver the curse f the semester the quiz questins will assess the full span f tpics and skills cvered in the hmewrk assignments. 3) Exams, including 2 in-class written exams, and an in-class final exam: Exam questins will require students t perfrm a variety f calculatins and answer a variety f cnceptual questins similar t thse n hmewrk, and prvide written justificatins fr their reasning. These written tests will be graded and returned t students with useful feedback n the clarity and crrectness f their reasning. Describe the meaningful writing assignments t be included.* Students will prvide justificatin fr their reasning and (when apprpriate) calculatin steps in weekly written hmewrk assignments, which will be graded and critiqued bth fr clarity and crrectness. Calculatin prblems will typically require just shrt explanatins (a sentence r tw) t clarify steps, while cnceptual questins n physical principles will require lnger explanatins (shrt paragraphs). Graded wrk will be returned with cmments. On exams, given after students have cmpleted several written assignments and received cmments, students will be expected t prvide mre detailed justificatins fr prblem slutins, and the expectatins fr the depth and clarity f written justificatins will increase n each subsequent exam, after students have received feedback n the previus exam. Additinally, in the crequisite labratry curse, students will prduce weekly written reprts (typically 2-3 pages) summarizing experimental methds, results, and interpretatins f results. Discuss hw these methds may be used t address the curse and prgram utcmes, as apprpriate. Include r attach a matrix t align the evaluatin methds t the utcmes.* Student Learning Outcmes Written Hmewrk Quizzes Exams Curse SLO 1: Perfrm simple calculatins, including relating the wavelength and frequency f a wave, relating intensity t pwer and distance, relating intensity t decibels, and determining the resnant frequencies f simple musical devices frm their shapes.
