26 English translation: A story about honey. 1. Bulanj Ambrose Mandingurra made a story about honey. He made the story about three kinds of honey; about len, djongko, yurdubbal. 2. He took it home to Ankabadbirri, then Belinj Carolyn wrote the text about honey, so that we will know the language for honey. 3. This is len (honey in the ground), Bulanj got it from a stringybark tree. Len comes from the ground. 4. This is the block of wax that blocks off (forms the wall of) the hive. 5. Here Wamud Yirrindili lifts out the honeycomb. 6. He breaks off the "shit" part (the eggs and larvae) from the liquid honey part. 7. Yurdubbal occurs in Xanthostemon trees, Acacia torulosa trees, stringybark trees, woollybutt trees, bloodwood trees, lots of (different kinds of) trees. 8. This is a Xanthostemon tree. 9. This is the old trunk of a Xanthostemon tree. 10. Bulanj is pointing to the "nose" part; the entrance to the hive. 11. This is the entrance to a yurdubbal hive in a bloodwood tree. 12. This is where the yurdubbal (bees) land on the bloodwood at the entrance (to the hive).
27 13. Here is the "shit" part (eggs) and bee of yurdubbal. 14. Here is the liquid honey of yurdubbal. 15. This is djongko (honey from small branches at the top of a tree), Bulanj got it from a Eucalyptus?foelscheana. 16. Bulanj points to the entrance of the djongko hive. 17. Here are little black spots (of bee shit) around the entrance to a djongko hive. 18. Bulanj is chopping open the djongko hive. 19. Here he has opened the djongko hive; it is lying exposed. 20. The honey and the "eggs" (pollen balls) are exposed so that they can gather it into a kolbborn (honey container). 21. This is a kolbborn (carved wooden container), formerly it was used for honey and water. Wamud Maliwanga carved this one. He made the handle, then non-aboriginal people bought it in Maningrida.

When you see these you know that there is honey inside, the "nose" part; the entrance to the hive; a little hole like a nostril in the tree where the bees go into and come out of the hive, a carved wooden container for carrying liquids such as water or honey. the floor at the bottom of the hive; a block of wax at the base of a vertically oriented hive, the wall of the hive; a block of wax at the side of a horizontally oriented hive, the liquid honey part the "shit" part; eggs and larvae, in tiny spheres of wax. "juicy shit" part; bee eggs and larvae mixed together with sweet liquid. the honey bee
29 Darda buh ngurrkuna Different kinds of honey djongko duwa a small hive. Djongko is always at the top of the tree in the thin outer branches. The hive is horizontally oriented, len duwa honey in the ground. Len is found in the roots of stringybark trees, in ant-bed (termitalia) at the base of a tree, or on clay embankments, kawurruwa duwa honey in rock. This hive is found in very hard stony ground or in crevices between rocks in the escarpment country, yurdubbal duwa a large hive. Yurdubbal is found in branches at the top of the tre The hive may be vertically oriented. It has a long wax tunnel that sticks out from the tree at the entrance to the hive. The hive may be quite large, with a wax wall after each section of eggs, pollen balls and honeycomb, and containing several such sections along the length of the branch. dibbu a large hive. Dibbu is found in a hole in the trunk or a hollow broken-off branch stump. It has a wide entrance. birrkkurda yirridjdja a large hive in the thick middle part of the tree. birrkurdkurd yirridjdja This has "selfish bees". Darda djamu-na ' Dogs for honey': bee predators kurrudjil yirridjdja "dog for len"; a wasp, yellow colour. This wasp eats bees. It sits outside the "nose" part and grabs bees as they come out. When you see that kurrudjil there on the tree, you know that there is honey inside. nono yirridjdja "dog for yurdubbal"; a wasp, pink colour. You see this wasp outside the entrance to the yurdubbal hive. When you see it you know that there is honey inside.
